Mentality Ingredients

Mentality uses four different blends to increase alertness, mental acuity, and overall brain power. Rich leaves no stone unturned in the amount of goodies lumped into Mentality, starting with:

  • Mind Over Matter Mental Power Blend (1g)

    • N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine

      Rich Piana Mentality Ingredients

      Mentality contains everything and then some of the tried and true cognitive boosters available.

      N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT) is a more bioavailable, and expensive, form of the amino acid L-Tyrosine.  NALT increases the production of two big time neurotransmitters, noradrenaline and dopamine. Higher levels of these neurotransmitters heightens your overall mood and focus, while also lowering signs of anxiety and stress.[1,2]

    • Panax Ginseng Extract

      Panax Ginseng, also known as True Ginseng, is a plant traditionally used in Ancient Chinese medicine for the prevention and treatment of various illnesses. Studies on ginseng demonstrate it improves mood, increases reaction time, and reduces fatigue.[3]

      Other studies suggest ginseng helps suppress appetite and regulate blood sugar levels.[4,5]

    • Rhodiola Rosea

      Rhodiola is an incredibly popular adaptogenic herb that helps the body deal with various emotional, physical, and psychological stressors. Adaptogens are used to  improve alertness and endurance while reducing mental fatigue brought about from stressful situations.[6]

      Rhodiola improves memory and cognitive functioning due to its actions on several neurotransmitter systems, including: acetylcholine, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.[7]

    • L-Phenylalanine

      Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that the body uses to make tyrosine. The body changes phenylalanine into tyrosine. From here, the body uses tyrosine to create several important chemicals in the brain including epinephrine, norepinephrine, L-Dopa, and thyroid hormones.[8]

    • White Willow Bark

      White willow bark contains a compound that is a precursor to aspirin. As such, it’s commonly as a means for natural pain relief. Clinical studies using white willow bark it helps to alleviate low back pain and osteoarthritis.[9]

      Further research into white willow bark shows it also has antioxidants and some anti-inflammatory properties.[10] As to why it’s included in Mentality is up to anyone’s imagination though.

    • Alpha Lipoic Acid

      Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a fatty acid present in the mitochondrion of each cell in the body that’s heavily involved in energy production. ALA supports proper cardiovascular function by improving blood flow and strengthening the muscles that line the blood vessels of the heart.[11]

    • Acetyl L-Carnitine

      Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is one of our favorite compounds for improving focus and concentration. It’s more bioavailable than regular L-carnitine since it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.[12]

      ALCAR often works in tandem with choline supplements to help increase the body’s production of acetylcholine, a crucial neurotransmitter heavily involved in cognition and memory formation.

    • L-Carnitine L-Tartrate

      L-Carnitine L-Tartrate (LCLT) is another highly available form of L-Carnitine that the body uses for a variety of functions. Most frequently, it’s included and pre workouts and fat burners to oxidize fat and as well as improve recovery brought about from intense training.[13] Not much has been done on LCLT in terms of boosting memory or cognition though…

    • Gotu Kola

      Gotu kola has widely been used in Traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of skin conditions. Clinical studies on the plant have found that it exhibits many benefits in helping individuals reduce symptoms of anxiety.[14]

    • Gingko Biloba

      Ginkgo biloba is one of the most popular, and best selling, herbal supplements in Europe and the United States. Traditionally, it has been used to improve memory and treat various blood disorders, which have been confirmed by modern research.[16]

      Some studies even suggest ginkgo biloba may enhance mental function in younger people.[17] For elderly people suffering from Alzheimer’s, ginkgo biloba may provide moderate amounts of relief.[18,19,20]

    • GlycoCarn®

      GlycoCarn® is a trademarked form of glycine propionyl-L-carnitine hcl (GPLC) often used as a nitric oxide boosting ingredient. This helps improve athletic performance, recovery times, and blood flow in the body.[21]

      This, along with LCLT, is another form of carnitine that hasn’t really been studied for its cognitive effects so we’re at a loss as to why it’s included in mentality.

    • Pterostilbene

      Everyone has heard of resveratrol, the polyphenolic compound found in red wine to elicit numerous cardiovascular benefits. Pterostilbene is a derivative of resveratrol, and often referred to as “better resveratrol” since it’s better absorbed by the body.

      Animal studies using the compound demonstrate that it reduces anxiety, improves mood, and heighten cognitive function.[22,23]

      This is also often paired with caffeine to make its effects last longer, but we haven’t ever “felt” that particular effect.

    • Sulbutiamine

      This ingredient may seem new to many of you, but it’s nothing more than a fat-soluble form of the B1 vitamin thiamine. It’s unique structure enables it to easily cross the blood brain barrier and function as a neuromodulator.[24]

      Sulbutiamine acts on the cholinergic, dopaminergic, and GABAergic systems, thereby helping improve memory.[25] It helps clear brain fog by acting as a mild stimulant, in addition to other ergogenic properties.[26]

    • L-Theanine

      L-Theanine is an amino acid that helps enhance the cognitive focus effects of caffeine, according to several trials.[27] Aside from smoothing out the jolt from caffeine, theanine helps alleviate anxiety, stress, and fatigue.[28,29]

      We love pairing L-Theanine with higher doses of stimulants – it takes the edge off. Clearly, that’s going to be a good thing with such a whopping nootropic product like this!

    • Huperzine A

      Fans of cognitive boosters are well-acquainted with the nootropic compound, Huperzine A, a.k.a. Toothed Clubmoss. Huperzine inhibits acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme responsible for degrading acetylcholine in the body, thereby indirectly increasing circulating levels of this all-too-important neurotransmitter.[30]

      Huperzine also improves overall brain health, by preventing premature cell death by the neurotoxin glutamine. Additionally, it may be neurogenerative in helping create new brain cells.[31,32]

      The many benefits of green tea are widely known by now. As such, it’s no surprise that they routinely show up in pre workouts and fat burners. Not only are they great for overall health, but also beneficial for increasing energy and fat-burning.[33,34]

      Whole leaf extracts have been clinically proven to work better than just EGCG alone.[35] Coupling it with caffeine further enhances the effects of the various polyphenolic compounds in green tea extracts.

    • Dicaffeine Malate

      Dicaffeine malate is a combination of caffeine anhydrous and malic acid that yields the same energy-boosting benefits as caffeine anhydrous but not quite as harsh.[36] Furthermore, the addition of malic acid helps offset some of the GI upset some often experience when consuming higher, more concentrated, amounts of caffeine.

    • Caffeine Anhydrous

      Caffeine needs very little introduction, or explanation, for that matter. You know it, you love it, and you use it regularly. It helps increase alertness, energy, and concentration in addition to physical performance.

      With so many more ingredients to go, we’re not going to waste time explaining any further. We just wished Rich would disclose how much total caffeine is included in Mentality.

    • Guarana Extract

      Guarana is typically seen in energy drinks, but packs quite a potent stim punch as it has 2x as much caffeine compared to coffee beans.

      Regular users of energy drinks are quite familiar with guarana. It supplies approximately twice the amount of caffeine as coffee beans possess.[37] This further increases the stimulatory effects[38] you’ll get from the ingredients already mentioned as well as the others to come.

    • Yerba Mate Extract

      Most people get their caffeine fix from coffee or tea, but there’s another source of caffeine that’s starting to gain traction among the masses, yerba mate. It’s a species of the holly family.

      The really neat thing about yerba mate is that it combines the healthful polyphenols found in tea with the caffeinated punch of coffee. This is a great combo that is sure to have more research coming out on it in the near future.

    • Theobromine

      Theobromine comes from the cocoa plant and is often deemed as caffeine’s little brother. It lends that typical “feel-good” sensation when consumed, fans of dark chocolate know what we’re talking about.

      Much like caffeine, theobromine acts as a mild stimulant, but the energy derived from it is much smoother and longer lasting than it’s big brother.[39]

  • Lucid Focus Neurotransmission Blend (300mg)

      Alpha GPC is a choline-containing compound that boosts production of acetylcholine, a.k.a. the “learning neurotransmitter.”[40] Studies using it show notable improvements in mood, focus, and even “mind muscle connection.”

      Other studies using Alpha GPC show it can increase power, endurance, and post-workout Growth Hormone (GH) output.[41,42]

    • Choline Bitartrate

      5%er Myka Dawn Clark knows where to go for the ultimate boost in focus and attention boosters.

      Choline supplements are often used to increase production of acetylcholine in the body, a neurotransmitter heavily involved in learning and preventing the onset of alzheimer’s disease.[43] Higher choline intakes have also been associated with enhanced cognitive functioning, as well.

      However, choline bitartrate is one of the cheaper forms of choline supplements and usually requires higher doses to be effective as compared to more bioavailable forms like citicoline or alpha gpc.

    • DMAE

      DMAE is a choline-derivative that supports acetylcholine production in the body. This helps improve not only cognition, but memory as well. That’s not all though, DMAE helps offset cognitive decline by preventing the buildup of the “age pigment” in the brain.[44]

    • Citicoline

      Of all the various forms of choline supplements on the market, Citicoline is the most bioavailable form used in dietary supplements.[45]

      It helps to improve memory and the “mind-muscle” connection exercising, or doing anything else really.[46] Basically, when using citicoline, you’ll just be more cognizant (“with-it-ness”) of your surroundings.

  • Cerebral Shock Cognitive Igniter Blend (45mg)

    • N-Methyl Tyramine

      N-Methyltyramine (NMT) is mild beta-2 agonist in the body that triggers the “flight or fight” response. This leads to a slight boost in adrenaline production as well as mobilizes fatty acids for energy. Research into NMT demonstrates it’s roughly 1/140th as potent as adrenaline, which helps support the other energy boosters in Mentality.[47]

    • Higenamine HCl

      Higenamine

      Higenamine activates beta-2 adrenoreceptors nearly as well as synephrine, but has less side effects, as shown by the studies cited to the left

      Higenamine is another beta adrenergic like our previous ingredient. Often times, it’s deemed a “weaker ephedrine” which isn’t allowed in sports supplements anymore.[48]

      Just like NMT, higenamine increases production of noradrenaline, which triggers a chain reaction stimulating the “fight or flight” response in the body. The result of these reaction is heightened focus, better concentration, and mobilization of stored fat for use as energy.

    • Vinpocetine

      Vinpocetine is a periwinkle plant extract promoted as a focus enhancer. This stems from a collection of studies demonstrating improvements in short-term memory after supplementation in patients with cerebral impairments.[49]

      While there’s very little published in terms of memory enhancement or concentration in humans, the early results are rather interesting.

To get the mental edge you need to be sharp on all your daily tasks, take one serving (3 capsules) in the morning with food. A second serving may be taken later in the day if needed.

Honestly though, it’s best to start with 2 capsules to assess dose – you can always take a third one later on in the day.

Takeaway

Mentality contains just about everything you’d want in a brain-boosting product. The only problem is that we have no idea how much of any of the ingredients are included. Another thing to consider is the different MOA’s of all the ingredients and whether or not any of them counteract the effects of each other resulting in not much benefit at all.

We’re not at all surprised to see this. If Rich had CREA-TEN, it was only a matter of time before he did something similar with focus boosters and stimulants!!
