5% Nutrition Shred Time: Time to MEGA-Dose That Fat Burn!

For several years, we’ve covered Rich Piana and his 5% Nutrition supplement brand, loving on their functional foods (Knock the Carb Out Bars and Cookies), dairy-free meal replacements (Real Carbs + Protein) and of course, the 5% pre workout supplement arsenal.

While the brand’s initial array of supplements had an energy-based nootropic named Mentality, 5% Nutrition never had a fat burner! That is… until now.

5% Nutrition Shred Time

After nearly a decade of bulking, it’s finally time for 5% Nutrition to release a fat burner: It’s Shred Time!

Rich Piana’s 5% Nutrition Shred Time Fat Burner continues following the company’s philosophy of “Go big or go home!” and serves as a great companion to the recent dairy-free protein, Shake Time. It’s an excellently-dosed thermogenic powerhouse and we don’t expect anything less from the brand started by the late Rich Piana, and they’re marketing it as “OVERDOSED” on Instagram.

Shred time should easily increase energy, suppress appetite, stimulate more fat oxidation, and put the body in a sweat pumping, thermogenic state.

Any Time is good for Shred Time!

5% Nutrition loves its pre workouts, but every now and then, even the biggest 5-Percenters want to shred down! Every product released by 5% Nutrition aims to embrace Rich Piana’s legacy, and Shred Time is here to carry the torch onward.

Fat loss, appetite suppression, increased energy, and a sweat-pumping thermogenic state

Shred Time is a powerful formula (see details below) with Sweat It Out Complex, Appetite Suppressant Complex, and a Fat Burner Blend containing spices like cayenne pepper, grains of paradise extracts, patented ingredients like NeuroFactor coffee fruit extract, and Infinergy DiCaffeine Malate.

5% Nutrition’s Shred Time fat burning supplement was designed to put all of the fat-burning competition to shame by including some of the most effective, well researched, and sought after ingredients available. Rich Piana’s 5% Nutrition Shred Time Ingredients:

Let’s take a look at the ingredients that make up 5% Nutrition’s Shred Time, dosed in six capsules:

  • Fat Burn Complex

    • N-Acetyl L-Carnitine Hydrochloride – 1000 milligrams

5 Percent Nutrition Shred Time Ingredients

Curiously, Rich Piana and 5% Nutrition never had a formidable fat burner… until now!

      The fat mobilizer.

Carnitine, in this highly bioavailable form, is synthesized in the liver by two amino acids: lysine and methionine. The primary function of carnitine is to transport stored fat to the mitochondria where it can be used as energy by the body.[1]

We shouldn’t have to tell Rich Piana’s fans to eat more meat, because that’s where carnitine comes from. When we’re low on carnitine, the body’s ability to mobilize fat significantly deteriorates, and we must diminish that. In addition (and more in line with 5 Percenters), over-trained athletes may be low on carnitine status, and carnitine will keep things moving and assist in recovery.

    • Green Tea Extract – 500 milligrams

Standardized to 50% epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)green tea is well known for its antioxidant benefits. Green tea extract is loaded with polyphenols and antioxidants, due to its active ingredients, known as catechins. Green tea is known to have several benefits, most notable and well established are the benefits to the cardiovascular system. It’s also known for its fat-burning, fat oxidation and thermogenesis capabilities, which is the purpose of taking Shred Time.

The most effective catechin is epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. The hormone norepinephrine signals the breakdown of fat to be used as energy. EGCG inhibits the enzyme that breaks down this hormone, allowing it to send a stronger signal so more fat can be used as fuel.[2]

    • Green Coffee Bean Extract – 250 milligrams

Shred Time relies on unroasted green coffee beans to keep the active ingredient, chlorogenic acid, intact. Preliminary research indicates chlorogenic can help reduce carbohydrate absorption. Additionally, animal studies have suggested that it improves the function of the hormone adiponectin and is considered the primary fat-burning hormone in the body.[3,4]

      5% Nutrition Legendary Series

We’ve always known about Rich Piana’s pre workouts… now get to know his fat burner!

These three ingredients carnitine, green tea extract, and coffee bean extract work synergistically to signal your fat-burning hormones to burn stored fat for fuel.

    • Cocoa Alkaloids (Theobromine) – 50mg and additional Theobromine – 50mg

Cocoa alkaloids are found in chocolate and kola nuts, as well as other chocolate and carob-based foods. Although similar to caffeine, a primary cocoa constituent, theobromine, has a milder stimulant effect, which makes it a great addition here because it eases the harshness of caffeine and creates a smoother energetic effect.[5] It’s common for companies to load up on caffeine, despite the negative effects it can cause. Leave it to 5% Nutrition to use two sources of this compound to help smooth out a hardcore dose of caffeine.

A double strike of theobromine / cocoa!

What’s interesting here is, if you look at the label, you’ll see two methods of adding theobromine to the mix. First, we have 50mg of general cocoa alkaloids, and then we get another 50mg of straight theobromine. This means we get both some of the “other” constituents of theobromine that may target a few different receptors (one such ingredient could be epicatechin, but we’re not sure)… and that’s all on top of the single compound, theobromine, that’s been studied solo.

    • Gamma-Butyrobetaine Hydrochloride (GBB) – 40mg

      It’s SWEAT time!

Gamma-butyrobetaine hydrochloride (GBB), a precursor to L-carnitine, has been shown to double the plasma concentration of carnitine in the body and amplifies its effects. On top of assisting Acetyl L-Carnitine above, GBB accelerates sweating and increases thermogenesis for faster fat loss, which a great selling point for a fat burning product.[6,7]

      GBB Supplements

GBB Supplements add to the “carnitine pool” by increasing the reagent — GBB — which goes on to make more carnitine if your body needs it!

This is an incredibly unique ingredient, and if you like to sweat, you came to the right place. This is the ingredient that may get things soaked if you enjoy busting a sweat when training.

    • Rauwolfia Vomitoria (Providing Alpha Yohimbine) – 3 milligrams

Things have been relatively benign up to this point… but this is where we see what 5% Nutrition is really getting after. Intensity.

Alpha yohimbine hydrochloride (Rauwolfia) is an alpha-2-receptor antagonist that stimulates increased noradrenaline production and is a mild stimulant that optimizes the body’s use of energy. Alpha yohimbine helps burn “stubborn” fat by blocking the a2 receptor, which shuts down fat burning. This is where the term “stubborn fat” originates because the a2 receptor makes fat harder to burn.[8]

Make no mistake. “Alpha yo”, as we call it, is a strong ingredient, and this is a strong dosage. The good news is that we get 3mg worth in six capsules paired with ~300mg caffeine, so beginners will want to opt for 3-4 capsules at first.

  • Sweat It Out Complex

    • CaloriBurn Grains of Paradise Extract – 50 milligrams

      CaloriBurn

Finally, a grains of paradise extract that actually passes lab tests for all clinical constituents!

Grains of paradise is a spicy herb that originates in West Africa. It contains an active phenol compound known as 6-paradol, a high quality, stim-free, herbal fat loss ingredient that stimulates thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT). Per 5% Nutrition’s website, it supports mood elevation on top of its weight loss effects as it helps convert stored fat (as white adipose tissue, or WAT) to the thermogenic BAT, which burns more energy.[9,10]

As we stated previously in the 5% Nutrition’s Stage Ready blog post, we’re big proponents of grains of paradise as a stimulant-free thermogenic fat burning agent. You can read more about the herb in our article, Grains of Paradise: Fat Fighting Spice of the Goddesses.

The clinical doses are 30mg and 40mg per day, so 5% Nutrition has beaten that once you get into that fifth and sixth capsule!

It’s also great to see 5% Nutrition using our most trusted form of Grains of Paradise in NNB Nutrition’s CaloriBurn, so you know you’re getting more than just 6-paradol inside, but also three other thermogenic constituents.

    • Cayenne Pepper Fruit Extract – 50 milligrams

As if things weren’t hot enough already from GBB and CaloriBurn, 5% Nutrition is adding another spice.

Cayenne Pepper Extract is used in fat burners because it contains the active ingredient capsicum, which stimulates and increases core body temperature (a process known as thermogenesis).[11] It’s hot to eat, and it’s hot in the body.

It turns out that when you get “revved up” from eating hot foods containing caspsaicin, the primary constituent, it actually releases adrenaline![12] This catecholamine stimulation may drive additional fat oxidation, as shown by studies that used higher doses.[13] Too much burn, of course, may lead to heartburn, so we like the dosage around this point.

  • Appetite Suppressant Complex

    • Hoodia Gordonii Extract Powder – 375 milligrams

      5% Nutrition Stage Ready

Are you Stage Ready? Get there with a diuretic that actually replaces lost electrolytes!

Originating in South Africa, hoodia is a plant that has an extended history of use as an appetite suppressant. Traditionally used by native tribes to help control hunger during hunting expeditions, due to its appetite control properties it’s a popular fat-loss aid today. It’s believed that hoodia works by tricking the body into thinking it’s satiated. The active ingredient in hoodia is P57, which was discovered by the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in 1977.[14]

    • Saffron – 88.5 milligrams

Saffron, part of the appetite suppression complex, is a spice that originates in Greece and is used to help ease stress and anxiety. It functions well as an appetite suppressant because it curbs hunger cravings. Another mechanism of action suggests that saffron creates the sensation of feeling full, so you eat less.[15] Who else but 5% Nutrition can create a powerful appetite suppressant complex that will bring your hunger to its knees?

  • Fat Burner Blend

    • Caffeine Anhydrous – 295 milligrams

Caffeine anhydrous is the most popular energy and alertness compound on the planet. Not only does caffeine increase energy and focus, it’s also been shown to stimulate thermogenesis.[16] To create a smoother and more sustained energy sensation, and to activate thermogenesis, 5% Nutrition uses several forms of caffeine. The compound used in Shred Time, caffeine anhydrous, has all the moisture removed, making it stronger than regular caffeine, gram-for-gram.

    • NueroFactor Coffee Fruit Extract – 50 milligrams

      5% Nutrition Core Line

The 5% Nutrition Core Line is out, and they’re not just single-ingredient formulas! Check out these simple yet unique spins on classic supplements.

NeuroFactor is a patented natural extract that originates from the coffee arabica plant. NeuroFactor increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports memory, learning, and cognitive function and is active in the brain and central nervous system. NeuroFactor produces a stimulant-like effect that works well with the other forms of caffeine in Shred Time.[17]

    • Guarana Seed Extract – 10 milligrams

Guarana seed extract is a South American fruit containing 22% caffeine, which is more caffeine than found in a coffee bean! Guarana has a slow energy release because of compounds called tannins, leading to a smooth, extended energy experience.

    • Infinergy DiCaffeine Malate – 10 milligrams

Infinergy, a combination of caffeine and malic acid, increases energy, elevates focus, stimulates thermogenesis, and is buffered to reduce stomach discomfort. Malic acid is involved in the cellular energy processes of the body and increases energy in two ways.

As is the tradition with 5% Nutrition, we’re talking about a serious, long-lasting caffeine complex, without the usual negative effects, along with thermogenic power! Note that this is a very small dose, but gets us to the 300mg caffeine spot if taking six capsules.
