What Is a Custom Premix?

A custom premix is exactly what it sounds like: a single blended ingredient that combines everything your formula needs, measured out, in the right physical form, and ready to drop into your process at the correct point. Instead of buying vitamin B12, zinc picolinate, selenium glycinate, magnesium malate, CreaBev, calcium, and a stabilizer separately and blending them yourself, you buy one premix that already has the ratios, particle sizes, and flow properties your production line requires.^[1] Note that the ingredients listed above come in vastly different doses (from micrograms to grams), and it takes great expertise to make it homogenous. This is where you want the best blending methods, so that you don't have "hot spots" involved.

This matters most in supplement formats where low-dose vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and bioactives must be distributed consistently throughout gummies, tablets, capsules, powders, and soft chews. But note that Glanbia blends the premix, yet doesn't manufacture your finished bar, beverage, or tablet. That part still goes through your own facility or a contract manufacturer. Building a fortified product without a premix supplier means managing every ingredient's own personality. Vitamin K typically comes as an oil. Calcium carbonate is a coarse powder. Cheap glycerol and alpha-GPC notoriously form clumps. A B-complex blend might be fine, dusty particles that clump under humidity. Production requirements vary significantly between gummies, tablets, powders, bars, ready-to-drink beverages, and liquid supplements, making application expertise just as important as ingredient sourcing. Most brand builders don't have that expertise in-house, and most contract manufacturers don't either. Powder manufacturers are genuinely good at mixing powders. What they're not always equipped for is the upstream sourcing, stability testing, and functional optimization that turns a list of raw nutrients into something that survives extrusion, high heat, or a liquid system without separating, clumping, or tasting off.

Microencapsulation can mask a strong or bitter flavor, delay how quickly an active releases, or protect an active ingredient from heat degradation. Granulation adjusts particle size to improve compressibility and solubility, turning a coarse, gritty mineral into something that flows and compresses evenly.
