    When people think of improving gut health, their mind immediately jumps to probiotics. However, if your body is not getting enough prebiotics, then adding more probiotics likely won’t help. Prebiotics come from food, supplements, or a combination of the two. Inulin is a naturally occurring prebiotic found in a variety of foods, such as oats, asparagus, garlic, wheat, onions, artichokes, and leeks.[1]

    The benefits of consuming a sufficient amount of prebiotics include enhanced immune function, increased quantity of good bacteria (Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria), and improved production of beneficial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids.     Chia seeds are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, in the form of alpha-linolenic acid and antioxidants, such as quercetin, cholinergic acid, caffeic acid, myricetin, and kaempferol.[4] These bioactive compounds express anti-aging, anti-carcinogenic, hepatic, and cardiac protective properties.[4]

    So far, over 200 different compounds have been identified in astragalus, including amino acids, saponins, polysaccharides, and flavonoids.[9] The literature shows that there are at least 160 triterpenoid saponins, including both cyclobutane-type and oleanane-type; 60 flavonoids, including isoflavones, flavonols, flavones, isoflavones, pterocarpans, and flavonoids; and 14 different polysaccharides.[9]

    Several studies have shown that astragalus may enhance innate and adaptive immune systems response, which helps you fight off foreign pathogens.[9] A systematic review published in 2017 reported that astragalus has some promising applications for anti-aging, with each bioactive constituent showcasing its own unique attributes.[9]

    However, the study authors noted that more research is warranted to further understand the mechanism of action behind astragalus.[9] One study from 2016 suggested that the bioactive components of astragalus are capable of altering cancer-signaling pathways and interacting with certain transcription molecules to offer protection against gastrointestinal inflammation.[10]

    Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that has even greater bioavailability after processing or cooking.[11] Thus, by using a tomato powder, it’s possible that your body will be able to better absorb and utilize the lycopene.[11] Lycopene is a carotenoid that’s responsible for tomatoes’ bright red color.[12] And the body is able to store lycopene, most commonly in the adrenal glands, testes, liver, and adipose tissue.[12]
