PEScience Greens & Superfoods: Freeze-Dried For Maximum Micronutrients

PEScience Jeff Nippard Gym

PEScience formulates supplements based on the latest research.

Greens powders seem to be popping up all over the place. Just over the past year, we’ve seen several companies come out with their own version of the superfoods, but do a few grams of dried vegetables really provide that many health benefits, and what makes one product different from another?

Those are great questions to ask before spending your hard-earned money on any supplement. You could be paying anywhere from $50-$60 dollars on a greens powder that potentially lacks hardly any true nutritional value, which is far from ideal. At that point you would be way better off buying fresh veggies at the store.

Fortunately, PEScience quickly recognized this issue as they looked at several competitors’ formulas. They took it upon themselves to tackle the problem head-on, and created a greens product that actually delivered all the health benefits the consumer was hoping for. As always, PEScience did their research and spent months formulating a supplement that could beat out any other greens on the market – both in value and efficacy.

PEScience Greens & Superfoods: Greens, Mushrooms, and Antioxidants

Not only does PEScience Greens & Superfoods contain a wide array of green veggies, such as kale, spinach, and brussel sprouts, it also has glycine, a mushroom blend, and Spectra to top it all off.

The ingredient drying method matters!

PEScience Greens Front

PEScience Greens & Superfoods features a unique formula for optimal benefits!

But that’s not the only thing that sets this product apart from the rest! PEScience realized that the reason why other greens products underdeliver is because of the way the ingredients are processed. The majority of greens are made by some sort of drying method, most commonly via air-dried or drum-dried. But what’s wrong with that?

Air-dried and drum-dried processing methods strip away many of the micronutrients out of the greens, which is one of the main reasons people take greens in the first place! Manufacturers typically prefer to use air-drying or drum-drying because it’s cheaper and drastically reduces the bitter flavor often accompanied with greens. However, that’s not in the best interest of the consumer.

The Power of Freeze-Dried Greens!

Thankfully, PEScience discovered that freeze-drying the greens can retain the micronutrients, while giving the powder a smooth and light flavor. PEScience’s goal with Greens & Superfoods is to provide you with a nutrient powerhouse without draining your bank account! Don’t be fooled by all the marketing claims behind other greens powders, “Select the Best” and reach for one that you can trust!

PEScience Greens & Superfoods Formula Analysis

PEScience took a different approach than the majority of other companies out there by adding in a few extra ingredients to provide even more benefits! It’s not very often that you find a generous dose of glycine along with a wide array of mushrooms, and Spectra added into a greens powder. Those three additions offer several health benefits on their own, so having them all in one product is quite useful.

And by using superior methods of processing such as freeze-drying and EverRaw, you’re getting a drink packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and potent fungi!

Without further ado, here’s what one serving (6.4g) of PEScience Greens & Superfoods delivers:

  • Glycine – 3000mg

    PEScience Greens Ingredients

Two things you rarely see in greens powders: glycine and a solid mushroom blend!

Here’s something we’ve never seen in a greens powder… glycine!

Glycine is a nonessential amino acid, meaning the body can synthesize it endogenously, as needed, by using various substrates. However, it’s also obtained through the diet from the protein sources you consume. Amino acids are building blocks of proteins, however they’re also utilized for several other functions within the body.

Each amino acid generally plays a role in protein synthesis, yet they all offer their own unique benefits as well. Glycine in particular can be used to create a potent antioxidant called glutathione.[1] Research shows that an insufficient intake of glycine can lead to significant reduction in glutathione synthesis, leaving you more susceptible to oxidative damage.[1]

Specifically with this formula, you’ll hear the term antioxidant come up quite a bit because PEScience Greens & Superfoods is packed with them! And why is it important to get enough antioxidants on a daily basis?

    The importance of antioxidants

Well, the name says it all, antioxidants are compounds that are able to protect your cells from oxidative stress. Oxidation is typically induced by unstable molecules called free radicals, which get synthesized through a variety of mechanisms, such as metabolism, exercise, UV rays, and toxins or pollutants. After the free radicals get unleashed, they quickly start looking for healthy cells to join their wrath. However, if you consume enough antioxidants, then your body will be better able to fight back!

    Glycine and creatine production

Beyond serving as a precursor to glutathione production, glycine also plays an important role in creatine synthesis, since it’s one of the three primary amino acids used to create creatine. And we all know how effective creatine is at boosting exercise performance, beyond supplementing with it, this is another way to ensure your stores are topped off!

    Glycine and collagen production

Glycine is also a major component of collagen, a structural protein that’s found within your connective tissue. Although collagen doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, it’s extremely important for optimal health and exercise performance. Collagen keeps your skin, hair, and nails looking good, while providing more strength for tendons, ligaments, and bones. If you want to stay injury-free, then it’s a good idea to make sure you’re consuming enough glycine and overall protein on a daily basis!

    Improved sleep quality?

Lastly, 3g of glycine has been shown to improve sleep quality, because it’s able to lower your core body temperature, and help calm your mind at the end of a long day.[2,3] And let’s face it, we could all use some more high quality sleep these days.

Great inclusion, but now let’s move onto some greens!

  • Greens Blend (Wheat Grass Juice Powder (everRAW), Freeze-Dried Kale Powder, Freeze-Dried Spinach Powder, Freeze-Dried Brussel Sprout Powder, Broccoli Sprout Powder) – 2,200mg

Mom always said to eat your vegetables, and she’s always right.. but now you can drink them instead!

There’s a wide array of veggies available at your local grocery store, which come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. But for some reason, green vegetables are put up on a pedestal.

Well, it turns out that greens definitely deserve the spotlight because they contain something no other vegetable has… chlorophyll. That’s right, beyond being packed full of micronutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which offer several other health benefits. Turns out chlorophyll is the secret to what makes greens so good for you.

    The power of chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the compound that gives greens their vibrant color and it also plays a unique role in the body. If you can remember from your 7th grade science class, chlorophyll is heavily involved in photosynthesis, which is how the plant creates energy by using water, oxygen, and sunlight. Without chlorophyll the chances of the plant surviving are slim to none.

PEScience Greens and Vegan Protein Powder

PEScience launched Chocolate Peanut Butter Select Vegan Protein Powder along with Greens & Superfoods!

Of course when humans ingest plants that contain chlorophyll, we don’t use it for photosynthesis, however it does activate a group of enzymes, collectively known as phase 2 enzymes. This consists of catalase, glutathione, and superoxide dismutase, just to name a few.[4] These enzymes play a key role in your body’s endogenous antioxidant defense system.[4]

Sure you can consume antioxidants, which help defend against free radical damage, but your body also has its own antioxidants already in place. Therefore, chlorophyll helps stimulate them to further fight back against any oxidative stress.

Furthermore, phase 2 enzymes can help buffer lactic acid, creating a more alkaline environment which may offer other performance benefits.[4] Lactic acid is a metabolic by-product that gets produced during exercise and as it accumulates, your body no longer can sufficiently produce ATP. Therefore, buffering lactic acid results in increased time to exhaustion, meaning you get a few extra reps on that last set of leg extensions.

Finally, research shows that greens can help naturally boost energy, the immune system, and vitality.[5] These are just some of the reasons why you should really be getting in greens on a daily basis!

  • Super Mushroom Extract Blend (Agaricus Blazei Mushroom Extract, Reishi Mushroom Extract, Shiitake Mushroom Extract, Turkey Tail Mushroom Extract, Maitake Mushroom Extract, Chaga Mushroom Extract) – 600mg

You may or may not be eating enough greens on a daily basis, but we can almost assure you that you’re not getting in enough fungi!

    PEScience Vegan Protein Collagen

Add Greens & Superfoods to your PEScience health stack!

Some people love the taste of mushrooms, while others despise them, but either way they’re packed with several nutrients that make them worth consuming on a daily basis!

Mushrooms naturally contain a hefty amount of specific carbohydrates that can be used as prebiotic fiber, such as galactans, chitin, hemicellulose, beta- and alpha-glucans, mannans, and xylans.[6] Prebiotic fiber is crucial for proper gut health since it helps feed the good bacteria that reside inside your stomach and small intestine.[7] Furthermore, by serving as a prebiotic fiber, mushrooms can also boost your immune system through reducing the amount of pathogens inside the digestive tract.[7]

    Mushrooms as a endurance booster

In regards to performance, low-dose daily mushroom consumption for several weeks has been shown to reduce blood lactate levels and increase VO2 max, time to exhaustion, and overall endurance performance.[8-10]

Although the doses vary drastically between studies, what’s most important is that long-term consumption of mushrooms yields the most significant improvements in exercise performance.[8,9] This is just one of the reasons why we like how PEScience included the mushroom extracts in with the greens, because both should be taken daily!

    Can mushrooms really enhance recovery?

Some research also suggests that mushrooms may be able to help with recovery since they’re able to enhance immune system function by activating phagocytes.[11,12] Despite what you may think, the cells responsible for fighting off foriegn pathogens are also crucial for repairing damaged muscle fibers, whether that’s due to an injury or going to failure on bicep curls.

Phagocytes,[13] such as neutrophils and macrophages, will rush to the site of damage to help clean up the debris.[13] And only after they clean up things, will the body be able to start the repair, rebuild, and growth process. Thus, if mushrooms can get the phagocytes running on full speed, it may lead to quicker recovery!

  • SPECTRA Total ORAC Antioxidant Blend (Coffee arabica Extract, Green Tea Extract, Broccoli Sprout, Onion Extract, Apple Extract, Quercetin, Acerola Extract, Tomato, Broccoli, Acai, Basil, Cinnamon, Garlic, Oregano, Turmeric, Carrot, Elderberry, Mangosteen, Camu Camu, Blackberry, Blackcurrant Extract, Blueberry Extract, Raspberry, Spinach, Chokeberry, Kale, Sweet Cherry, Bilberry Extract, Brussels Sprout) – 100mg

The last ingredient to round out this nutrient packed formula is the clinically studied dose of Spectra Total ORAC Antioxidant blend.

You’re already getting plenty of antioxidants from the greens, glycine, and mushrooms, but just in case you need a little more, Spectra is a phenomenal addition.

    Spectra

Enhance Nitric Oxide and Defeat Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) with just 100mg!

Spectra was developed by a well-known ingredient developer called Futureceuticals and it consists of over thirty different plant extracts. Spectra has been starting to make its way into several health and sports performance supplements because there’s a good amount of research to support its use.[14]

For example, a study published 2014 found that when humans were given 100mg of Spectra daily, it resulted in a significant reduction in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), also called free radicals, from both cells and their mitochondria.[14] Furthermore, they found that Spectra was able to enhance cellular metabolic activity, and help the body defend against free radical damage.[14]

As we discussed previously, free radicals are a specific type of molecule that can get released endogenously through various metabolic processes. Without enough antioxidants, the body is less able to neutralize the free radicals. ROS are very unstable and they travel around looking for a healthy cell to attack. Once they latch on, the cell’s DNA, membrane, and enzymes can be destroyed, eventually resulting in cell death.

Fortunately, Spectra is here to make sure that you’re fully equipped to deal with any free radicals that come your way. Furthermore, spectra has been shown to boost nitric oxide levels and decrease inflammation.[14] Which could result in better pumps, exercise performance, and recovery due to increased oxygen and nutrient delivery to the working muscles!

Other Ingredients – Naturally Sweetened and Flavored!

PEScience Select Protein Graphic

Greens & Superfoods are unflavored so you can through them in your protein shake or put them in a smoothie!

Here’s what else is included in Greens & Superfoods to give it a smooth and light flavor:

  • Natural Flavors

  • Sweenter: Monk Fruit Extract

Two other ingredients and that’s it!

PEScience is going all natural with Greens & Superfoods by only using natural flavoring and monk fruit extract! We know some of our readers will greatly appreciate that since consuming large amounts of artificial sweeteners, such as sucralose and ace-K can cause some problems.

Keep in mind that at the time of writing this blog post, Greens & Superfoods is only available in unflavored, therefore if they come out with other flavors in the future, this list may vary slightly. But it’s always great to see a short ingredient list so you know they’re not adding any fillers!

Available Flavors

Here’s an updated list of all available flavors of PEScience Greens & Superfoods:

PEScience Greens & Superfoods: The Greens Powder You’ve Been Waiting For!

PEScience made sure to take their time before coming out with a freeze-dried greens powder that they could stand behind. But now that it’s here, we can tell you it was well worth the wait! This is definitely a lot more than just a few leaves of spinach and some kale. It’s packed with a wide variety of mushrooms, herbs, fruits, greens, and glycine to top it all off. PEScience Greens & Superfoods’ formula definitely stands out compared to the other greens powders on the market.

    PEScience Health Supp Stack

PEScience also offers various other supplements geared towards health!

Not to mention, this is the first time PricePlow has ever seen a company specifically note what method of processing they use for the greens. It just shows that PEScience has nothing to hide (just like with their Select Protein lab tests), and they want the consumer to know why their product may be superior to others.

While some brands solely rely on social media influencers and marketing campaigns to drive sales, it’s nice to see that PEScience puts a much greater emphasis on education and science. Informing the customer about what ingredients actually do, rather than putting out misleading claims, is always something you should look for in a supplement company.
