Looking for a pre workout without beta alanine? This is the one for you!
PEScience underwent a bit of a “backlash” with their original customer base when they recently reformulated beloved fat burners Alphamine and Norcodrene. While PES did have very solid reasons for altering the formulas, many longtime customers just didn’t agree with the change in direction from the popular company.
However, that’s not slowing PES down one bit, as they have finally decided to re-enter the stimulant-based pre workout supplement market with the Prolific pre workout!
You may remember PES’ former pre workout titled Enhanced, but that’s been gone for quite some time. Prolific is a bit different than its long-gone older brother. Prolific is lower stim than Enhanced yet still provides great focus. Plus, it actually surpasses Enhanced as an ergogenic pre workout.
Prolific’s not just the same old, same old – there’s one new ingredient named NeuroFactor you’ll need to read about below!

Prolific Ingredients
PES Prolific packs eight different transparently-dosed ingredients that are sure to deliver an all-around top notch workout experience full of energy, pumps, performance, and most important of all mind-altering focus!
Note: Doses listed below are shown at both 1 and 2 scoops per the product label.
-
L-Citrulline (3g, 6g)
Prolific starts off strong with a hefty dose of one of the most potent nitric oxide boosters around, L-Citrulline. Found in high amounts in watermelon, L-Citrulline promotes a very strong increase in nitric oxide (N.O.) production, considerably more than L-Arginine due to its superior bioavailability in the body.[1] Higher nitric oxide levels mean greater vasodilation, blood flow, nutrient delivery, and most important of all pumps!
On top of that, L-Citrulline also acts as a fantastic performance enhancing ingredient. Since it’s involved in the Krebs Cycle, L-Cit helps improve endurance, stamina, and ATP production, all leading to more effective workouts and more gains![2-4]
-
Betaine Anhydrous (1.25g, 2.5g)
Formerly featured in PES’ now-discontinued Ergonine muscle-builder is the power and strength booster Betaine Anhydrous, which has been moved to Prolific. Also known as trimethylglycine (TMG), betaine is a proven muscle building compound derived from sugar beets. Studies using this all-natural anabolic ingredient document significant increases in strength, power, and endurance, while also helping to reduce soreness.[5-7]
Additionally, betaine also synergizes with the king of natty muscle builders, creatine, to enhance the body’s natural production of the potent ergogenic.[8]
-
Caffeine (160mg, 320mg)
In an age of ever increasing stim blends in pre workouts, Prolific keeps it nice and tidy with a blend of caffeine anhydrous and Infinergy dicaffeine malate yielding a total of 160mg per scoop.
Caffeine is the “every man’s stim” and provides the perfect kickstart you need to get going and then sustain that energy throughout your workout. Sure, there are other products out there that have fancy new “fun” stims in there, but sometimes it flat out just feels good to get back to a more clean, and “pure” energy in your workouts.
-
Cognizin Citicoline (125mg, 250mg)
Choline supplements are a premier choice when wanting to increase focus during exercise, studying, or really anything else. Most pre workouts opt for the bitartrate variation which is cheaper and less bioavailable (meaning you need more to get equivalent effect).
PES shells out the big bucks including the more expensive and bioavailable Cognizin Citicoline. This form of choline is absorbed by the body much better[9] and if you’ve never used choline before, this is one you’ll definitely “feel”.
Choline supplements help you feel more “zoned in” during your workouts and foster an incredibly strong “mind-muscle” connection.[10] Citicoline is also known as Choline CDP, and it’s without a doubt our favorite form.
-
L-Theanine (100mg, 200mg)
Theanine is an amino acid found predominantly in tea leaves that’s best known for its relaxation-inducing qualities. That’s not why it included here though, as research shows it also enhances the cognitive focus effects of caffeine[11], and helps alleviate stress, anxiety and fatigue.[12,13]
Additionally, many like pairing theanine alongside high doses of caffeine to help “smooth out” it’s sometimes “jolting” effects.
The question is dosing.
Mike’s a big fan of using L-Theanine with higher doses of stimulants – it eliminates that “on edge” feeling; Robert on the other hand isn’t as wild about (makes him feel “too chill” during workouts). Seeing the relatively high dose of theanine to caffeine in Prolific should make for some interesting (and possibly opposing) feedback from the two.
-
Rhodiola Rosea (50mg, 100mg)
Rhodiola rosea is a rarely encountered herb in pre workouts. Rhodiola is an adaptogen that helps the body deal with assorted emotional, psychological, and physical stressors. Herbs like rhodiola also prove beneficial with improving endurance and alertness while reducing mental fatigue from stressful situations.[14]
Additional research also points out that rhodiola can enhance cognitive function and memory due to its actions on the neurotransmitter systems for dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and acetylcholine production.[15]
Prolific’s rhodiola extract is standardized to 5% rosavins, 2% Salidroside, two high powered bio-actives of the herb. Studies into these compounds document increased athletic performance and enhance glucose uptake by skeletal muscle.[16,17] So we get increased performance AND alertness from this stress-reducing herb!
One last word about rhodiola…Typically, your “standard” Rhodiola extracts found in other pre workouts are standardized to 3% Rosavins. Prolific uses the much higher 5% Rosavin standardization, meaning you’ll need less of the overall ingredient to get more of the benefits!
-
NeuroFactor (50mg, 100mg)
NeuroFactor is an all-natural, patented extract from Futureceuticals made using the whole fruit (including the bean) of the coffee plant, Coffea Arabica. NeuroFactor has real human research showing it significantly increases Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF).[18]
BDNF is a protein active in the brain, CNS, and peripheral nervous systems that plays a critical role in neuron development and repair; in addition, it also protect against neurodegeneration.[19] BDNF is also believed to be highly important for learning, memory, alertness, mood, and response to exercise (though this is still being investigated).
The pilot study conducted on NeuroFactor compared it to Green Coffee Bean extract, Natural Coffee Caffeine, and Grapeseed Extract for its effects on BDNF levels in the brain. Researchers documented that NeuroFactor was the only compound to show a “statistically significant ability to increase BDNF in humans.”[20]
Specifically, blood levels of BDNF were elevated during the first 60 minutes following consumption with a dose of 100mg, the exact same dose in 2 scoops of Prolific![18] Researchers plan on following up this pilot study with another larger trial in which they’ll also test for athletic performance increases.
This is one ingredient we’ll be keeping a close eye on!
Flavors Available
One thing that can be said without question of PES’ supplements is that they know flavoring, no doubt about it:
As of 2021, our favorites are easily Melon Berry Twist, Sour Peach Candy, and Strawberry Kiwi.
Can I stack it with HIGH VOLUME?
Absolutely!!! PEScience’s High Volume is one of the most epic stim-free pre workouts out there, and is all over our Best Pre Workout Supplement guide on the stim-free section.
Click the link in the above paragraph to read more about High Volume, but it can definitely be stacked (even at half a serving to save money) for more bombastic pump-driven workouts when lifting.
Takeaway
As much controversy as there was over the recent Alphamine and Norcodrene reformulations, PES should be able to win back a majority of the community’s goodwill with the release of Prolific. The real question is whether you want this much L-Theanine, because everything lines up quite well.
Prolific packs everything you’d want in a supplement from a performance, pumps, focus, and energy standpoint all without making you feel cracked out of your mind – and brings us one new ingredient to boot!
Stay tuned for updates on this product once we get our hands on it!
