Bodybuilders often align themselves with supplement companies, which we don’t usually write about since it happens so often. However, when a top hollywood actor starts his own line, that sure does make the ears perk up.
That’s right — A-List celebrity and fitness aficionado Mark Wahlberg, a.k.a. Marky Mark, has co-created a new line of sports nutrition supplements titled Performance Inspired. It seems that he’s moved on from his “Marked Nutrition” brand with GNC and on to Performance Inspired with Tom Dowd.
We’ll highlight the products down below, but first, take a moment to check the best deal on this new line and sign up for alerts from PricePlow:

Performance Inspired Supplements
We know what you’re thinking, “Mark Wahlberg just put his name on the product, he’s not really working on the line.” While that may certainly apply to most cases in the supplement industry, Wahlberg has a well-known passion for fitness and is a certified workout junkie. So he teamed up with long-time GNC employee Tom Dowd to formulate this lineup. Asked in a recent interview why he decided to start the company, Wahlberg said,
“The great thing about my partner Tom Dowd is that he worked for 25 years at GNC and helped build some of the greatest products out there. We see how the space is growing. [We’re] creating a product line that wasn’t out there yet. I’ve always been adamant about being natural, no matter what I was doing—training, putting on weight, losing weight. So this is an all-natural product— nothing that can give you a bad reaction. Student athletes can take it, collegiate athletes—you never have to worry.”[1]
For more insight into the line, as well as a few of Mark’s favorite exercises, check out this video below:
At launch, Performance Inspired will have three products for fans and customers. As they’ve stated, the entire line up will be all natural, gluten free, and above all guaranteed to give you those famous Wahlberg abs (ok, maybe not the last part)…
Anyway, on to the lineup!

Explosive Pre-Workout
No supplement line is complete without a pre workout, and Performance Inspired is no different. Simply titled Explosive Pre Workout, PI’s pre is a general “all-around” pre for the casual gym goer. It’s not too high on the stims, clocking in at only 175mg of caffeine (from green tea). We can’t forget to mention that it’s also naturally sweetened with Stevia and Lo Han Guo extract too!
Other ingredients included in 100% transparent, non-proprietary blend are: 3g of creatine mono, 2.5g of beta alanine, 2g of L-Citrulline, and a large dose of N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (1.5g)! This is better dosing than you’ll find with many of the crack n’ stim products on the market.
Is this the best pre workout you’ll encounter on the market? No, but it’s certainly much better than we expected from an actor-created supplement line!

Ripped Whey Protein
To get abs like Marky Mark, you’ve got to be ripped when you step in front of the camera. To help the common man achieve that chiseled look, PI offers a thermogenic, fat-burning protein formula titled Ripped Whey Protein.
This “thermo-whey” formula comes with 25g of protein from a combination of whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate as well as a few other fat-burning additions which include:4g Leucine, 500mg L-Carnitine L-Tartrate, 150mg Choline Bitartrate, and 70mg of caffeine from green tea.
Not protein spiked!
You’ll notice that the free form amino acids up above are included (leucine and LCLT), which introduces some label confusion. Technically and legally speaking, those free form aminos should be added to the Protein number under the nutrition facts.
However, Performance Inspired has assured us that there is a legitimate 25g whey protein in Ripped Whey – the leucine and LCLT are bonus on top of that. So in our book, this is not amino acid spiked (plus, it’s always great to have more leucine anyway – we get more upset when cheaper / lower-quality aminos are added). While this goes against the FDA’s labeling requirements, we believe that it is the right way to do this – we see 25g protein, we want 25g food-based protein.
The carb situation…
However, this fat burning whey may not be the most macro-friendly protein around, as each scoop contains 160 calories and 9g of carbs (2g sugar). Just like we saw with the brand’s pre workout and the next product to follow, Ripped Whey is all-natural, meaning NO artificial sweeteners like Ace-K or Sucralose.
It’s very difficult to flavor protein without sucralose. So far, the best take we’ve seen is Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate, which is also carb-free. It seems that Ripped Whey is taking a slightly different approach, using natural carbs, which unfortunately steal some space out of the tub. This also isn’t the best option for carbophobes, although 9g isn’t the end of the world for most of us.=
At launch, Ripped Whey will be available in two flavors: Mocha and Vanilla Latte.

Performance Whey Protein
As the name implies, Performance Whey is all geared towards optimizing your performance in and out of the gym. Each scoop contains 25g of protein from a combination of whey concentrate and whey isolate as well as a whopping 5g of fiber plus digestive enzymes to help those who may be a little lactose sensitive.
There’s no thermogenic ingredients here with Performance Whey, what you see is what you get. This is pure protein plain and simple, no fillers, no aminos, no caffeine. 25g of pure whey protein to fuel your gains. And, as we’ve seen with all the other products, it’s naturally sweetened, and contains NO artificial colors, flavors, or dyes!
Similar to Ripped Whey, Performance Whey will be available in two flavors: Natural Chocolate and Vanilla Bean. The big question is, will these two flavors actually taste any different than the Ripped Whey flavors, or are the names just different?

Takeaway
It’s not everyday we get a new supplement line launched by a celebrity, let alone one that’s fairly respectable. The big issue, as with all brands attached to big names, is the price. We know that PI will be at GNC, but will it be marked up at their outlandish prices, or will it be priced more closely to the GNC house brand. That will ultimately determine whether the line is a hit or not with the crowd’s that populate the big box store.
