Myprotein THE PUMP Enhances Your Performance Without Caffeine

Just a few years ago, putting insane amounts of caffeine into pre workout supplements was the standard — companies would push the limits to see how far they could go to beat out their competitors. We’ve even seen pre workouts with 500-600mg of caffeine per serving. Sure, a small group of people may enjoy that, but for the vast majority of fitness enthusiasts, that’s way too much.

Myprotein THE Pump

THE Pump from Myprotein features a solid blend of ingredients that boost pump, performance, and focus.

Although there are still strong pre workouts on the market, the pendulum is starting to swing to the opposite side of the spectrum. There’s been a massive increase in stimulant-free pre workout supplements in an effort to reach a wider audience. You may be wondering… what does a stimulant-free pre workout even have to offer?

Realize that caffeine is not the only ingredient that can boost exercise performance! The majority of non-stim pre workouts are formulated to enhance blood flow to the working muscles, resulting in increased nutrient and oxygen delivery. You’ll notice greater muscular endurance, work capacity, power output, strength, and a much bigger pump!

Getting The Pump

It turns out that the pump, also known as hyperemia in the scientific community, is a very important component of maximizing muscle growth. If you want to increase your chances of getting a pump, make sure you’re hydrated, keep your glycogen stores full with enough carbohydrates, consume adequate amounts of sodium, and take well-formulated non-stim pre workout 20-30 minutes before your workout! Now the question is — what’s a good stim-free pre workout to choose?

THE Pump Ingredient Breakdown

THE Pump is the first stimulant free pre workout that Myprotein has introduced to the states. It was formulated to enhance blood flow to the working muscles, resulting in more efficient oxygen and nutrient delivery, as well as metabolic byproduct removal. But the benefits don’t stop there — Myprotein also added in beta-alanine to increase muscular endurance, betaine anhydrous to improve power output, and taurine to further enhance work capacity.

Lastly, Myprotein added in both AstraGin and BioPerine to increase the absorption and bioavailability of the entire formula — resulting in better effects! Going above and beyond is what the Pro Range is all about, so let’s break down what each ingredient has to offer.

Here’s what one serving (16g) of THE Pump delivers:

  • L-Citrulline – 6g

The first ingredient in THE Pump is a massive dose of pure L-citrulline, weighing in at 6g. It’s exciting to see L-citrulline dosed that high, and if you do, it’s typically paired with malic acid (as citrulline malate), which actually yields a lower amount of pure L-citrulline per serving. Not here!

    Myprotein THE Pump Ingredients

Fully transparent label and clinically studies dosages!

Ever since the sports supplement industry discovered that L-arginine had poor bioavailability and resulted in a negligible increase in nitric oxide levels,[1] companies have been searching for something that could take its place. Fortunately, formulators unlocked the hidden nitric oxide boosting potential of L-citrulline and it’s now one of the most popular ingredients in pre workouts, especially stimulant free pre workouts.

It turns out that L-citrulline raises endogenous L-arginine levels better than L-arginine itself,[1] but how is that possible? When you consume L-citrulline through supplementation, it gets converted into L-arginine by an enzyme called argininosuccinate synthetase.[1] Following that, L-arginine goes on to create nitric oxide through the interaction with an enzyme called nitric oxide synthase.[1] In the end, L-arginine also forms L-citrulline and the cycle repeats itself.[1]

Ultimately, increasing levels of nitric oxide in the body is our goal for this ingredient and it does an incredible job. Nitric oxide gets the blood vessels to expand, also known as vasodilation, which leads to more blood flow.[1] As we mentioned before, a greater delivery of blood flow to the active muscles can boost both pump and performance. Thus, If you’re looking to get a nasty pump, then 6g of L-citrulline is here to deliver!

  • Beta-Alanine – 3.2g

For enhanced muscular endurance, Myprotein included 3.2g of beta-alanine. If you’ve ever felt a tingling or itching sensation after taking a pre workout, it’s most likely due to beta-alanine. But that’s not all beta-alanine is known for — several studies have shown that adequate amounts of beta-alanine supplementation significantly increases endogenous levels of carnosine, resulting in enhanced exercise performance.[2]

    Myprotein Bicep Curl

If you want to maximize your performance in the gym, then THE Pump is a great pre workout to try!

Carnosine is a dipeptide molecule naturally produced by the body by utilizing two amino acids: L-histidine and beta-alanine.[2] Carnosine plays an important role in the buffering of a metabolite created during exercise called lactic acid.[2] As lactic acid builds up in the skeletal muscle, it creates a more acidic environment by reducing the pH level. Lactic acid gets produced when there’s a back up in the energy systems that are responsible for creating ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

One of the end products in glycolysis, known as pyruvate, accepts a proton from another molecule called NADH — this allows NADH to get converted back into NAD+ and keep the process moving. After accepting the proton, pyruvate turns into lactic acid and eventually causes fatigue due to a reduction in pH levels.[2] Although this phenomenon is almost inevitable, carnosine can delay this from occurring by serving as a proton buffer.[2]

In summary, the research on beta-alanine’s benefits are well-established, and it’s been shown to increase high intensity exercise performance across a wide variety of exercise modalities.[2] Some of the greatest benefits have been found in activities lasting longer than 60 seconds, which is why beta-alanine is often marketed as an endurance booster.[2] Not to mention, this is an ingredient that you can really feel working as the tingles kick in shortly after consumption!

  • Betaine Anhydrous – 1.5g

Betaine anhydrous is another well researched ingredient that offers several health and performance benefits, however, the majority of the studies use 2.5g as the dose, thus in order to get the full effects of betaine — you may want to add in an extra gram from somewhere else.[3] Needless to say, betaine is one of PricePlow’s top ingredients for pre workouts due to its ability to enhance body composition, aid in fat loss, increase muscular strength, endurance, and power output[3-5] — but how does it accomplish all of those feats?

    Myprotein THE Coffee Boost Hype

Myprotein THE Coffee Boost can get you running on full speed.

Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine, is an organic osmolyte — meaning it helps maintain fluid homeostasis between the extracellular and intracellular matrices.[3] This makes the cells more resilient to outside stressors. When it comes to enhancing performance, most of betaine’s benefits are attributed to its ability to donate a methyl group to homocysteine.[3] Homocysteine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid naturally produced in the body from the metabolism of methionine.[3]

Homocysteine is capable of inhibiting protein synthesis and insulin signaling, it’s also been linked to serious health conditions.[3] When betaine donates a methyl group to homocysteine, it gets converted back into methionine and that can serve as a precursor to creatine production![3] Creatine has a host of performance benefits, which is why many people supplement with it on its own, thus greater levels of creatine can be very beneficial.

Other research has attributed betaine’s performance benefits to its ability to stimulate insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1), resulting in greater myotube differentiation and hypertrophy.[4] Lastly, a meta-analysis from 2019 concluded that betaine enhances lipolysis in fat cells, facilitates the browning of white adipose tissue, and decreases lipogenesis.[5] THE Pump may not be a fat burner, but it may help you reach your body composition goals faster!

Out of this entire formula, this is the one ingredient that we’d love an extra gram of!

  • Taurine – 1g

Along with beta-alanine, taurine is another powerful endurance booster.

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that takes on multiple roles within the body. Taurine is a major component of bile, which is used to break down energy substrates in the digestive system, it also acts as an osmoregulator, helps maintain calcium levels, promotes proper central nervous system and eye function, and expresses potent immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties.[6,7]

    Taurine Endurance

Taurine’s effect on endurance, with success in doses anywhere from 1 gram to 6 grams.[6]

Because taurine is produced endogenously, but is crucial for general health, it’s classified as an conditionally essential amino acid. This means that your body can produce enough to fulfill the minimum requirement, however more is needed under certain circumstances, such as stressful situations. Although exercise is a very positive thing, it does place a large stress on your body, especially when you’re pushing your limits. Thus, taurine supplementation can be very beneficial and studies show that it’s a very underrated endurance booster.[6,7]

More research is needed, but the current hypothesis is that taurine increases levels of calcium in both cardiac and skeletal muscle, resulting in more efficient muscle contractions, even when approaching muscular fatigue.[6,7] Calcium is not only important for bone health, it’s required for the cross-bridge cycling that occurs between two proteins that enable muscle contractions — actin and myosin. Furthermore, studies have shown that anywhere from 1-6g of taurine supplementation enhances exercise performance,[6,7] so Myprotein is giving you just enough to reap all of the benefits!

  • Green Tea (leaf) Extract (as VASO6) – 300mg

By far the most innovative ingredient in THE Pump is VASO6 from Compound Solutions!

VASO6 consists of six different green tea leaf extracts that combine to induce potent vasodilating effects. Vasodilation is a term used to describe expansion of blood vessels, thus allowing more blood flow to circulate throughout the body.

    Myprotein Dumbbells

    Fuel your performance with Myprotein.

Although VASO6 is one of the newer ingredients in the sports supplement industry, it’s catching on fast and you can find it in several pre workouts. The research shows that VASO6 is capable of boosting endogenous nitric oxide levels, which is what signals the endothelial cells in your blood vessels to relax.[8-10] It works in a very similar fashion as L-citrulline.

However, instead of increasing nitric oxide production by boosting L-arginine levels, VASO6 actually expresses its effects by interacting with the enzyme responsible for creatine nitric oxide — known as nitric oxide synthase.[8] Thus, VASO6 has a different mechanism of action then L-citrulline, which will likely result in a synergistic effect. Some studies have shown that VASO6 induces relaxation of the blood vessels by as much as 15%.[10]

In addition to enhancing blood flow, VASO6 supplementation significantly increases glucose uptake into skeletal muscle cells and promotes muscle protein synthesis.[8,9] Lastly, green tea leaves are a rich source of epicatechin, which offers its own health benefits![10] 300mg is a solid dose and if you pair that with 6g of L-citrulline — there’s no way you’re not going to get a massive pump!

  • AstraGin (Astragalus membranaceus and Panax Notoginseng) Root Extracts – 50mg

This next ingredient is something that’s quickly gained popularity in the sports supplement industry and for a great reason! AstraGin is a trademarked ingredient from NuLiv Science, it consists of a proprietary blend of two potent plant extracts — astragalus membranaceus and panax notoginseng.

    AstraGin

AstraGin is a combination of Astragalus and Panax Notoginseng that’s been shown to increase ingredient absorption, especially of amino acids!

It turns out that the combination of these two plants has profound effects on the bioavailability and absorption of dietary ingredients and nutrients.[11] AstraGin has also been shown to positively affect overall gut health.[11]

You can find AstraGin in a wide variety of products, from protein powders to pre workouts, to everything else in between. Some companies even sell it as a standalone product, which highlights just how powerful it can be. AstraGin carries out its benefits by activating various transports within the small intestine, resulting in a significant increase in the absorption of several compounds and nutrients.[11] It essentially enhances the effectiveness of a supplement by getting your body to absorb and utilize a greater amount of the ingredients.

Furthermore, it promotes gut health by strengthening the structural integrity of your gastrointestinal lining and decreasing inflammation.[11] Overall, AstraGin is a phenomenal ingredient and we’re glad to see it included in THE Pump!

Lastly, AstraGin is not the only ingredient in this product that increases bioavailability, Myprotein also includes a great dose of BioPerine!

  • Grape (Vitis vinifera)(Seed) Extract – 25mg

Grape Seed Extract (GSE), also known as Vitis vinifera in the scientific literature, is an ingredient that you don’t see very often, but it offers unique benefits due to its rich concentration of antioxidants, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and anthocyanins.[12] GSE is produced by removing the seeds from grapes, letting them dry, and crushing them until a fine powder is formed.

    Myprotein Clear Whey Lemon

There’s nothing better then an ice cold drink post workout!

Research has revealed that GSE supplementation improves blood flow, decreases blood pressure, protects cells from oxidative stress, enhances brain, liver, and kidney health, and promotes bone mineral density.[12-18]

Although the benefits of GSE go far beyond getting a pump or increasing exercise performance, the main reason why Myprotein put it in THE Pump was to further enhance vasodilation of the blood vessels, allowing more oxygen-rich blood to enter the working muscles.[12] The majority of GSE vasodilating properties are attributed to its antioxidant properties.[12]

With the combination of L-citrulline, VASO6, and GSE, get ready to have fuller looking muscles after just a few sets. You also get the additional health benefits that GSE provides, so it’s a win-win situation!

  • BioPerine (Black pepper fruit extract) (piper nigrum) – 5mg

As we mentioned in the AstraGin ingredient section, Myprotein also included 5mg of BioPerine to round out THE Pump’s robust formula. BioPerine is a high quality black pepper extract developed by Sabinsa Corporation, it’s standardized to contain at least 95% piperine — the main biologically active constituent.[19,20]

    Bioperine

Bioperine is the trusted, trademarked form of black pepper extract that promises 95% or greater piperine, the part of black pepper with all the activity!

Ever since researchers discovered that black pepper extract was capable of dramatically enhancing the absorption and bioavailability of curcumin, a major component of turmeric, they started to assess what other nutrients it would work on. They quickly discovered that specific black pepper extracts with high amounts of piperine could enhance the bioavailability of several compounds including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and omega-3 fatty acids — just to name a few.[19,20] Once that news caught on, supplement companies started adding BioPerine to a host of products.

While AstraGin increases specific transporters in the small intestine to boost absorption, BioPerine inhibits various enzymes involved in nutrient and drug metabolism, including P-Glycoprotein.[20] Furthermore, BioPerine enhances thermogenesis slightly, which also contributes to its effects.[20] Either way, since you’re getting efficacious dosages of both AstraGin and BioPerine, you won’t be missing out on uptaking any ingredients from THE Pump!

Available Flavors
