Labrada PE-1 – One Scoop Pre-Workout? Maybe 1.5? Or 2?!

Labrada’s new pre-workout supplement, PE1, has finally hit the shelves.  The hype machine started… but after our analysis below, we’re left feeling a bit baffled by this one and what the hype is all about.

First off, we’re still not sure if this means a phase-out of A-2 Pump or Super Charge! Xtreme N.O. is in the works.

But more importantly we’re just not so sure about this ingredient list, as displayed on There’s some weird stuff going on here.

Meanwhile, our thoughts and prayers are with Sergio Oliva. There is a definite possibility that he was ritually exorcised in the new promotional material, as you can see in the picture to the right. Or just having the best workout of his life. You decide.

Each scoop is going to provide:

  • 1.6g beta alanine

  • A 1.6g blend of NO3-T (Citrulline Nitrate), Arginine AKG, Agmatine Sulfate, and Creatine

  • A 344mg of Performance-Enhancing Energy Complex, featuring 154mg caffeine, Bitter Orange for 30% Synephrine, Yohimbe, and a bunch of vitamins interspersed.

Looking at the details:

  • Double-Pumps from Citrulline Nitrate

    Let’s start off with citrulline nitrate, Labrada’s patented nitric oxide pump enhancer. This one could be a ton of fun… if there’s enough of it.

    Several studies have shown that citrulline increases exercise capacity, a nitric oxide boost, and reduces muscle soreness. There’s some theoretical basis to believe that fusing it with nitrates will increase bioavailability and induce longer-lasting, better pumps.

    Needless to say, Labrada is binding two of our favorites, so it should be good. But is there enough?

    It’s still probably a beneficial additive, definitely more effective than taking the same dosage of citrulline malate, but the question is how much exactly are you getting per serving? It’s on top of a proprietary blend of 1,634 milligrams that also contains arginine AKG, agmatine sulfate and Creapure creatine monohydrate (huh?!), so it’s impossible to tell whether the dose is actually at effective levels unless Labrada volunteers this information prior to the product launch.

    What’s the deal with pixie dusting creatine?

    And while we’re on the subject, the creatine monohydrate content in that blend can’t possibly be at an amount that is actually beneficial.

    Seriously, what’s the point of doing this? To confound the other ingredients in the blend? So that you can say that you “have Creapure” in your product?


    Shouldn’t there be a minimum dosage allowed before you’re allowed to use their logo?

    3-5g of creatine monohydrate per day is the typical standard. But if you’re taking this as your pre workout… guess how much extra creatine we’d recommend to you outside of this product? 3-5g per day. Because whatever’s in there is likely so small that it’s not even worth counting in the first place.

    Meanwhile, the benefits of Arginine AKG and Agmatine sulfate can be argued, but it comes down to dosage — AAKG will be too small for most benefits regardless of what it is, and agmatine could be well-dosed, but it does come after two ingredients.

    All-in-all, the pump content here seems a bit of a gamble right now, which is a shame because the top ingredient sounds like it could be a rock star in the proper doses.

  • A rather odd energy blend

    The questions aren’t over yet. What’s up with the 154 milligrams of caffeine? 150 milligrams is a pretty standard dose in other products, so this may just be a gimmick to claim that PE1 provides more energy than competing products. There’s no question the energy and focus content are going to be effective for some, but others may not appreciate the 1 scoop limit, as caffeine tolerances are typically higher.

    Meanwhile, we find it odd that the vitamins are interspersed in the energy blend, but thanks to US RDA labeling, it helps us open up the formula too.

    Breaking it down

    1. We know that there’s 344mg total
    2. Caffeine is 154mg
    3. Vitamin C is 100mg (from the nutrition facts)
    4. Niacin is 20mg (fom the nutrition facts
    5. Thus, the Advantra Z / bitter orange / synephrine is going to be between 20 and 100mg.

      With some subtraction, we know that we have about 70mg to break down between this ingredient and yohimbe (which is 10% yohimbine).

      Something like a 55mg / 15mg would make sense in that case

    After breaking these down, it makes sense that it should be a 1 scoop product – the synephrine and yohimbe, no matter what ratio they’re in, will be felt.  But is that enough for the caffeine-hungry bunches out there?  If not, will the pumps be enough to overcome the energy shortfall?

  • Beta alanine

    CarnoSyn beta alanine is tried and true, and the 1,635 milligram serving is a standard dose for a scoop of pre workout.  However, you’d need two doses of that to get the 3.2g clinical dosage, which is against the label’s recommendation.  So it’s really a half-dose of beta alanine in the end.

Is this really a one scoop product?

At the end of the day, we have to question whether this will really work out as a one-scoop product.  There are other products out there that have larger doses in each scoop, so it’s ultimately going to come down to price for us.

Maybe PE-1.5 or PE-2?

Until we give it a go, it still seems like 1.5-2 scoops would be more effective for most experienced users – and that involves both the pumps and the energy side.  However, that’s without knowing the exact synephrine and yohimbe dosages, which could change everything.

No focus support?

Another shortfall seems to be that there won’t be any nootropic / cognitive support here, besides what’s provided from caffeine, synephrine, and/or yohimbe.  Those are great, but we’ve been doing even better with some form of choline.

We also wonder who’s going to step up and add an efficacious dosage of ALCAR (acetyl l-carnitine) to a pre workout someday.  Anyone?


PE1 is going to be available in Green Apple, Raspberry Lemonade and Tropical Punch. Labrada has a fruit punch flavor available with many of their other products, so presumably this will be similar, but the others are new.

This is actually great to hear, since we’re kind of sick of the same old fruit punch / blue raspberry / lemon-lime / orange flavors anymore.

Can this beat so many other great products?

In summary, we just don’t see this one topping anything on our Top 10 Pre Workouts list, unless the price comes in ridiculously low.

Some of the ingredient levels might require you to use 1.5 or two scoops instead of one, but even if you’re OK with that, it will depend on your synephrine and yohimbe tolerance (always start light!).

It’s hard to give an assessment to a product, or to throw the product in the trash before it hits shelves, but some more details about the ingredient levels would really help its cause.
