On June 19, Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals announced yet another industry acquisition: Hi-Tech has bought Top Secret Nutrition.[1]
This is a bit of a lower-profile target than past purchases (listed below) since TSN has been a bit dormant lately, but there is some strategy to this one. Let’s explore:
Why Hi-Tech Bought Top Secret Nutrition
The public statement from the press release states,
“Hi-Tech’s impeccable reputation for pharmaceutical-grade quality, strong innovation and manufacturing expertise make it a perfect complement to Top Secret’s brand of high quality nutrition products. Additionally, having access to our extensive production capabilities across a variety of product formats is a significant competitive advantage.”
— Brandon Schopp, Vice-President of Contract Manufacturing at Hi-Tech Pharma
But there’s a bit more strategy than just that:
Expanded mainstream reach and distribution
Over the past decade, Top Secret Nutrition has done very well at industry monsters like Bodybuilding.com, Amazon, and Vitamin Shoppe – areas where Hi-Tech admittedly has less business for various reasons.
TSN also has a great history with Select Distribution and Europa Sports Products, who are the best connection to independent retailers and smaller e-commerce distributors.
This gives Jared Wheat and the Hi-Tech Pharma team a footing in the mainstream consumer market – which is where they intend to keep Top Secret Nutrition.
New products already firing up
Jared Wheat quickly told us:
I will come out with a few more new sku’s that are cool but not hardcore, as this line is more for your average guy or girl.
— Jared Wheat, CEO of Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals
This means you probably shouldn’t expect any of the “more aggressive” supplements from TSN, which will give it safe harbor in the three major retailers above, none of which who carry such ingredients.
The press release already mentions one new product, Fireball L-Carnitine Igniter, which puts a unique spin on L-Carnitine by using both L-Carnitine L-Tartrate (LCLT) and a dash of ALCAR (Acetyl L-Carnitine), but also includes Paradoxine Grains of Paradise extract, our favorite non-stimulant fat burning ingredient!
Unfortunately, despite it’s name, this product does not come in a cinnamon-flavored Fireball shot modeled after the popular whiskey drink that goes by the same name, but we’ve put a request in for TSN to consider this. Right now the flavors are Apple, Cherry, and Pineapple.
The growing Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals / Jared Wheat Empire
The list continues to grow, as Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals now owns the following brands:
- APS Nutrition
- iForce Nutrition (iForce acquisition announcement)
- Formutech Nutrition
- LG Sciences (LG acquisition announcement)
- ALR Industries
- Innovative Labs
- Sports One
- Top Secret Nutrition
And Jared Wheat also has at least some stake in the following heavy-hitters:
- Gaspari Nutrition (Gaspari announcement)
- Blackstone Labs
- Prime Nutrition (Prime Nutrition announcement)
This is on top of the countless other brands who Hi-Tech Pharma does contract manufacturing for in its FDA-inspected cGMP-certified facilities.
More to come? Probably…
There may be some additional other announcements coming soon as well. Don’t go too far or you might miss the industry earth shake!
