Ronnie Coleman released a new pre workout called Yeah Buddy that’s heavy on stims and void of any real pump aids.

Ronnie Coleman is one of the many professional bodybuilders to have his own line of sports supplements. Fans of the 8 time Mr. Olympia champion have eagerly awaited the release of his brand new pre workout, Yeah Buddy, ever since it was announced several months ago.

The profile has finally been released and is heavy on the stim that’ll be sure to get you in the gym no matter how lethargic you may be.

Key Points

  • 420mg caffeine blend
  • Six different stimulants (seven if you count the two forms of caffeine)
  • One new herbal ingredient (adhatoda Vasica)
  • No ergogenics (ie. no muscle builders like creatine or betaine)

Yeah Buddy Ingredients

Yeah Buddy is a semi-open label, with the ergogenic aids fully disclosed while the “Yeah Buddy Bomb” stimulant blend is locked away behind a proprietary label:

Note: The ingredient label below reflects the updated ingredient profile that has replaced HydroMax™ with a combination of L-Citrulline and Agmatine Sulfate.

  • Pump & Endurance

    • CarnoSyn® Beta Alanine (2g)

      Yeah Buddy Ingredients

Yeah Buddy has been updated to slightly increase the pump by removing HydroMax and adding a bit of Citrulline and Agmatine.

Yeah Buddy starts off with a healthy dose of the endurance and power boosting amino acid beta alanine. This powerful amino binds to histidine in the body to form carnosine, a lactic acid buffer in skeletal muscle.[1]

Removal of lactic acid helps eliminate the burning sensation that builds in your muscles during the course of higher volume sets and workouts. This leads to greater endurance, strength, muscle growth, and power![2,3,4]

Now, Yeah Buddy contains a little over half the clinical dose of 3.2g. You may want to add another 1.6-2g of bulk beta alanine to get the full effects.

    • L-Citrulline (1g)

Apparently our earlier analysis had caused some heads to turn over at Ronnie’s Headquarters. No longer do we only have 1g of Hydromax as the sole pump agent. Rather, it’s been replaced by a combo of L-Citrulline and Agmatine Sulfate.

L-Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid shown in research to be far more effective, not to mention more bioavailable, than the old “standard” pump booster, L-Arginine.[27,28] What we’re getting at here, is that Citrulline is better than Arginine when it comes to increasing N.O. levels. This results in greater blood flow, which keeps a fresh supply of nutrients going to your muscles, helps remove metabolic waste, improves endurance, but most importantly, increases vasodilation and yield big PUMPS!

Now, we would love to see 3-4g of Citrulline to really see some monstrous pumps; however, with the addition of 500mg of agmatine you should still see some noticeable pumps compared to the previous version.

    • Agmatine Sulfate (500mg)

To build off the N.O. boost you’ll get from L-Citrulline and help prolong its effects, the updated version of Yeah Buddy has added the pump “extender” Agmatine Sulfate.

By pump “extender,” we mean that Agmatine helps prolong, or extend, Arginine’s life and effects in the body. Agmatine accomplishes this by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for breaking down arginine, arginase.[29]

When used alongside a strong N.O. booster like L-Citrulline, you should notice longer lasting, as well as denser pumps. Some other fringe benefits of prolonged N.O. production will include increased endurance, greater vasodilation, and better circulation.

  • Focus

    • Choline Bitartrate (500mg)

Ronnie is looking for testers for this new high-stim pre workout...will you be one of the few?

Ronnie is looking for testers for this new high-stim pre workout…will you be one of the few?

Choline supplements are frequently used to increase focus and improve the “mind-muscle” connection during a workouts. All bodybuilders know it’s not the amount of weight you’re moving, but the completeness in range of motion to really tear down every single muscle fiber to ensure maximal gains.

Choline bitartrate is one of the more common, cheaper forms used, and requires a slightly higher dose than Citicoline, a.k.a. Choline CDP. In addition to heightening focus, choline boosts endurance and weight loss due to elevating the concentration of betaine in the body.[9,10]

    • TeaCrine® (50mg)

TeaCrine®, a.k.a. theacrine, is structurally similar to caffeine, and is actually synthesized from caffeine in certain plant species.[11] Current research indicates it also exhibits similar effects and benefits as caffeine, but much longer lasting..

Much like caffeine, theacrine acts on your dopamine and adenosine receptors in the brain, which heightens mood and energy levels. The really cool thing about theacrine though is that it doesn’t lead to a tolerance build up like caffeine.[12,13]

  • Extended Release Caffeine (420mg)

Caffeine really needs little explanation. Yeah Buddy utilizes two forms of caffeine to provide the initial heavy hit of energy: the fast-acting caffeine anhydrous and PharmaSure® SR Time-Release Caffeine.

This is a combination we’ve seen used with increasing frequency in new pre workouts hitting the market, and frankly, we’re huge fans of it.The initial surge of anhydrous gets you going, and the extended release caffeine provides long-lasting, smooth energy throughout your workout and for several hours afterwards.

The one thing we don’t know is the total caffeine content. Typically, extended release caffeine is bonded to other molecules that delay the absorption and yield a compound that isn’t 100% caffeine. Yeah Buddy doesn’t divulge the actual caffeine content, so we’ll assume for the time-being that it’s between 350-400mg until we get clarification.

  • “Yeah Buddy” Bomb (75mg)

You know things are about to get a bit enhanced when you see the words YEAH BUDDY BOMB on your label…

    • Synephrine HCl

WIll Ronnie's new pre workout have you screaming YEAH BUDDY after your workout?!

WIll Ronnie’s new pre workout have you screaming YEAH BUDDY after your workout?!

Synephrine is one of the main alkaloids of bitter orange (a.k.a. Citrus Aurantium) and structurally similar to the now-banned ephedra. However, unlike ephedra, Synephrine has been proven time and again to be both safe and effective for use.[14,15]

Synephrine is a powerful Beta-2 and Beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist[16,17] that frees the body’s hold on triglycerides and releases them into the bloodstream (a.k.a. lipolysis). This allows your body to use fat for fuel and save your glycogen stores for high intense exercise.

    • Higenamine HCl

Higenamine is another beta receptor agonist included in Yeah Buddy. It’s sometimes referred to as a “weaker ephedrine” (which has long since been banned for use in supplements, and provides a mild stimulatory effect on its own.[18]

Hordenine increases production of noradrenaline in the body which ignites the “fight or flight” response in the body. Higher levels of noradrenaline lead to increased focus, concentration, and alertness, plus the added benefit of inducing lipolysis.

    • Phenylethylamine

Phenylethylamine (PEA) triggers a strong, albeit brief, release of catecholamines (adrenaline, dopamine, and noradrenaline), which creates a “feel good” sensation.[19] While PEA won’t due much for enhancing your actual performance, the catecholamine release may indirectly stimulate lipolysis simply because noradrenaline is a well-known inducer of lipolysis.[20,21]

With PEA this low down in an already-smallish prop blend (we’re dealing with a max dose of 25mg), it’s unlikely you’ll feel much of anything out of this one. Usually you need at least 100mg to feel, and it still won’t last long unless it’s alongside a few other ingredients with MAO inhibition capabilities.

    • Adhatoda Vasica

      Ronnie Coleman Stack

To really get some pumps going in your workout, stack Yeah Buddy with Ronnie’s N.O.-boosting pre workout STACKED for an unbelievable combo!

Sometimes referred to as English as Malabar nut, Adhatoda Vasica is a medicinal shrub native to Asia and frequently used in Ayurvedic medicine. There are a number of alkaloids contained in the shrub that have been studied for their benefits in treating symptoms of asthma and coughing.[22,23]

As to its role in Yeah Buddy, we’re going to venture a guess that it’s included to improve your breathing capacity and oxygen utilization during the workout. It’s hard enough to breathe normally when doing max rep squats or lots of supersets, so any help taking in more oxygen to replenish your muscles and lungs is welcomed!

    • Yohimbine HCl

Yohimbine is a naturally occurring alkaloid extracted from the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree and the Rauwolfia Serpentina plant. Yohimbine heightens focus and cognition, in addition to providing a strong boost in energy.[24,25,26]

Some people tend to steer away from products that contain Y due to adverse reactions from lesser quality extracts, leading to the quintessential “dirty stim” feel. Most of those are gone these days, but still if you’re overly sensitive to Yohimbine, you may want to proceed with caution.

We normally assume to see about 1.5mg of yohimbine HCl, which is a good point where “it works but won’t freak many people out”. That’s what we hope, at least.

Flavors Available

Yeah Buddy comes in three flavors, two of which aren't utilized all that often in supplements. Which will you choose?

Yeah Buddy comes in three flavors, two of which aren’t utilized all that often in supplements. Which will you choose?

Now that the label has been revealed, it’s only a matter of time until Yeah Buddy hits store shelves. Once it’s released, it’ll be available in one of three flavors:

  • Electric Lemonade
  • Sour Berry
  • Cherry Limeade

Takeaway: Pumps better, very close to perfection

This product is about two grams of L-Citrulline short of being an absolute monster for the ages.

As it stands, it’s still a bit more of a “crack and stim” tub with a touch less in the way of pumps to back it up. We love Citrulline and Agmatine, but the doses used of the two, particularly L-Cit, doesn’t automatically turn this into a full-package “one scoop wonder”.

Again, though, this isn’t the intent of this product, and for most users who want energy, it’s gonna be close enough…

With the updates in 2016, we’re no longer disappointed, and we’re gonna have to give it a go before we see if it belongs on the non-DMAA high energy parts of our best pre workout supplement guide.

Should we buy it because we love Ronnie? Maybe for you and other big fans. To finish the job, we’re considering adding something like 360PUMP, Ronnie’s own Stacked NO, or any of the other best stimulant-free pre workouts to balance it out just a bit (maybe even half a scoop of a stim-free pre), and then you’re in beast mode.

Regardless, the kids will eat it up — this is what sells right now — so all the power to Ronnie’s team.

Update: Also remember Ronnie’s response to the above line to our original post, which was a bit less enthusiastic:

Either way, yeah Buddy looks like a hard-hitting pre workout perfect for those who need one serious kick in the pants to get going in the weight room. For those that are sensitive to caffeine, you may be better off with ½ scoop or trying a different, more well-balanced option entirely.

For those brave enough to tackle Yeah Buddy at the full 1 scoop, you’ll be in for one serious ride that’ll have you screaming “YEAH BUDDY!” at the end of every set.
