TruBrain Bars — Nootropic powered Energy Snack!

TruBrain Bar

TruBrain is the first of its kind all natural energy / snack bar loaded with nootropics like Citicoline!

Most of us get our supplements via pills or drinks, but wouldn’t it be fun every now and then to eat your supplements in one tasty and tidy package?

That’s what a team of UCLA neuroscientists set out to do when forming TruBrain, a company devoted to optimizing human brain function and productivity through its line of nootropic supplements.

The team has developed the ultimate “brain food” in their TruBrain Bars, an all-natural snack bar that’s also packing some serious nootropic goodness.

TruBrain Bar Ingredients

TruBrain Bars aren’t so much a protein bar, as they are a whole food, plant-based snack on the go. But why we’re really intrigued by these bars is the nootropic focus blend that’s included, which we’ll cover first!

  • Citicoline (250mg)

    TruBrain Bar Ingredients

TruBrain Bar uses only all natural ingredients along with a hefty dose of potent nootropics to power your mind and body.

Citicoline (CDP-Choline) is an extremely bioavailable form of choline, and one of our favorite forms, with Alpha GPC being the other. Citicoline is absorbed by the body much better than the lesser Choline Bitartrate[1] and if you’ve experimented with choline before, you’ll certainly feel this one!

Choline supplements significantly enhance focus, and when taken pre workout serve to strengthen the “mind-muscle” connection[2], which could come in handy if you eat this bar as your pre workout fuel.

  • L-Theanine (150mg)

Readily found in tea leaves, Theanine is the “chill” amino acid best known for its relaxation-inducing qualities. More importantly to its inclusion here, theanine enhances the cognitive focus effects of caffeine[3], and reduces stress, anxiety and fatigue.[4,5]

Additionally, pairing theanine alongside caffeine smooths out caffeine’s stimulant kick. The trick is usually to get the dosing right, and the 2:1 theanine to caffeine ratio works well for most people when it comes to improving focus and concentration.

  • Caffeine (80mg)

    TruBrain Bar Close Up

TruBrain bars look tasty enough…but are they actually enjoyable to eat?

A bar with caffeine? Absolutely, if you want that focus to work!

TruBrain Bars pack a modest 80mg of caffeine per bar, about as much as you’d get in an 8oz cup of drip coffee. This amount of caffeine will give you a mild pick-me-up if you’re dragging and serves as a solid foundation to support the other nootropics included in TruBrain Bars.

Our biggest issue here isn’t that this dose is low, but that the L-Theanine dose is nearly 2x as high. In our experiences, we’ve felt that things work better when L-Theanine is a bit less than caffeine, otherwise it’s too relaxing for us. It all depends on what you want though.

  • Noopept (20mg)

One of the most effective nootropics of all, Noopept is a proline-containing dipeptide shown to enhance the function of acetylcholine receptors[14], and improve Long Term Potentiation (LTP), due to it binding to the NMDA glutamatergic receptors in your brain.[15]

Noopept works incredibly well alongside choline-based ingredients, and that’s why we’re glad to see TruBrain bars include the 250mg of Citicoline previously discussed.

We’ve discussed Noopept plenty more in detail in our mega-post titled: Noopept: Enhancing the Smart Within. So check that post out if you want all the info on this potent noot.

Without a doubt, this may be the only time you’ll see an ingredient as advanced as this in a food supplement!

  • The Rest

    TruBrain Bar Box

So far, the only way to get TruBrain bars is through direct mailing via their subscription service.

As we stated, TruBrain Bars are whole food plant-based bars, so there’s no whey protein powder in here, artificial sweeteners, fillers, or thickeners — only all natural ingredients. Providing the main nutrition to the bar are the following foods:

    • Dates
    • Natural Peanut Butter
    • Brown Rice Protein
    • Erythritol
    • Cocoa
    • Black Chia Seeds
    • Almonds
    • Peanuts
    • Puffed Brown Rice
    • Natural Sunflower Lecithin

Seeing as there is brown rice protein in these bars, we’d have hoped (and expected) the protein macros to at least be a bit higher for these bars. Speaking of which, let’s go over the macros for the bar!

TruBrain Bar Macros

TruBrain Boxes

You ready to load up on TruBrain Bars?

Each bar weighs 44g and contains the following macros:

  • Calories: 210
  • Protein: 7g
  • Carbs: 23g (4g Fiber, 12g sugar, 0g added sugar)
  • Fat: 10g (1.5g saturated)

Flavors Available

Currently, TruBrain Bars are only available in one flavor, pretty much loved around the world — Chocolate Peanut Butter. Seeing as this is a plant-based bar, it might have an interesting taste & texture, possibly similar to the Bhu Fit Bars we’ve previously had.

Takeaway

What an interesting idea! Will it work? It has enough nootropics for users to feel it, so we don’t think that’ll be a problem. The bigger question is in consumer education and marketing. Many nootropic users already have their stack or their dietary preferences. So this takes a small (but growing) market and slices it down pretty hard.

Sometimes you get tired of taking pills and powders all day long to get your daily supplements in. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could eat something and it actually deliver the goods you get from your supplements?

Well, that’s what the TruBrain bar does. You get your nootropic boost and crush a snack-craving in one go. The bars certainly seem interesting, now, we just need to go grab some and possibly try them out!

We hope it works out and tastes well though, because we like the idea, so long as you’re not a low-carb dieter.
