Imagine that you’re a high-level athlete competing in the CrossFit Games where the world’s fittest man and woman are crowned. After a weekend of grueling workouts, you come out on top and take the title. You’re standing on the podium with your country’s flag held high and it hits you: months of hard work and dedication leading up to this moment finally paid off.
Shortly after, you’re selected for a randomized drug test and it’s positive. All of a sudden, your first place medal is stripped away, sponsorships are dropped, and the prize money vanishes. No longer are you called the fittest on earth, but instead a cheater.
All of this time, you had no idea the dietary supplements you were taking contained banned substances that weren’t disclosed on the label. It’s unfortunate that this could happen, but there are ways to ensure you never end up in this scenario, which brings us to the Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG).
BSCG: The Gold Standard in Dietary Supplement Certification
The BSCG is an organization that’s committed to ensuring dietary supplements are free containing from over 496 banned substances, including:
- Steroids
- Stimulants
- SARMs
- Beta-2 agonists
- Peptide hormones
- GHRPs
- Aromatase inhibitors
- Hormone and metabolic modulators
- Diuretics and masking agents
- Narcotics
- Cannabinoids
- Glucocorticoids
- Beta-blockers
- PDE-5 inhibitors
- Muscle relaxers
- Pain killers
- Opioids
- Benzodiazepines
Although the supplement facts panel on a dietary supplement may not actually list one of these banned substances, they could become cross-contaminated during processing. Whether you’re a competitive athlete who is regularly drug tested or an ordinary consumer, the potential for cross-contamination is something you should be aware of.
Fortunately, some companies, such as Revive MD and RAW Nutrition, take extra steps to ensure that every supplement they produce is banned-substance free by becoming BSCG-certified. It’s a rigorous, timely, and costly process, but to Dr. Domenic Iacovone and Matt Jansen, co-founders of Revive MD and RAW Nutrition, BSCG certification is worth it.
Keep reading to find out why RAW Nutrition and Revive MD chose to become BSCG certified.

Revive MD versus RAW Nutrition
Revive MD is a dietary supplement company that’s solely concerned with health and wellness. It was co-founded in 2019 by Matt Jansen, a professional bodybuilder and respected coach, and Dr. Domenic Iacovone, a renowned figure in hormone therapy and health and fitness. The goal with Revive MD was to create a brand that offered high-quality supplements formulated to optimize hormone and organ health.
Revive MD is not your typical sports nutrition brand. You’ll never find a pre-workout, protein powder, fat burner, or amino acid supplement on their website. Instead, you’ll find several products geared toward health and wellness, such as:
It’s hard to believe that Revive MD started in 2019 because they’ve experienced tremendous growth in a relatively short period of time. The company sponsors several high-level athletes, such as Chris Bumstead, Nick Walker, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, Hunter Labrada, and Stipe Miocic. Revive MD’s growth isn’t slowing down anytime soon and becoming BSCG-certified was the natural next step on the way to reach a larger audience.
RAW Nutrition, founded early in 2020, focuses on offering dietary supplements that maximize sports performance. However, RAW Nutrition was also co-founded by Matt and Domenic early in 2020. Although RAW Nutrition is one of the newest brands in the sports nutrition industry, it’s obvious that there’s a team of veterans behind the brand.
We’ve covered several RAW Nutrition products on PricePlow, including:
After trying nearly the entire supplement line, we’ve been pleasantly surprised with the formulas, quality, and flavors.
Although both brands cater to different customers, it’s apparent that quality, safety, and efficacy are the foundation of their products. As consumers, we appreciate that Revive MD and RAW Nutrition send their supplements to third-party testing facilities to ensure their products contain exactly what the label says. They also use fully-disclosed labels, as opposed to proprietary blends, so customers know the dosages of each ingredient.
Now that you know who is behind Revive MD and RAW Nutrition, let’s look at the BSCG certification.
BSCG Certified Drug-Free
The BSCG was founded in 2004 by father and son team, Dr. Don Catlin and Oliver Catlin. Their goal was to restore quality and safety to the dietary supplement industry through the BSCG certification process. The BSCG performs rigorous independent testing of supplements and ingredients, which enables manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, and brands to establish their products as safe, reputable, trusted, and drug-free.
The BSCG offers several services and certifications, including:
- Certified Drug-Free
- Certified Quality
- Certified GMP
- Finished Product Certification
- Ingredient Certification
- Facility Certification
The organization is most known for its Certified Drug-Free program. The program can be used for any dietary supplements, including natural products, functional foods, and more. The BSCG Certified Drug-Free programs protect athletes, consumers, and animals by testing and certifying finished products and ingredients for banned substances. The BSCG tests for nearly 500 banned substances and covers drugs on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List and other drug testing programs such as:
- NFL
- MLB
- NHL
- NBA
- WNBA
- PGA
- LPGA
- MLS
- FIFA
- NASCAR
- CrossFit
- NCAA
- Military
- Law enforcement
- First responders
The BSCG Certified Drug-Free program has been around for over 15 years and is the gold standard. Not only do they certify finished products, but they also certify ingredients and manufacturing facilities.
“We are excited to be working with Revive MD to certify the Revive and Raw products. Revive MD has an exciting model integrating regenerative medicine and nutrition together. Medicine and nutrition are often disconnected in today’s world and it is great to see Dom, Samantha, and Matt bring a unique angle to the industry. The Revive and Raw product lines offer a wide array of no-nonsense supplements to consumers. Our certification is a great way for premium quality brands like Revive and Raw to showcase their commitment to consumers and to demonstrate that they have gone above and beyond industry standards to verify products are free of banned substances in sport and other prescription, OTC, and illicit drugs.
BSCG is proud to be a leader in third-party certification. In our Certified Drug Free program we offer the broadest testing menu available in the industry. We cover 276 WADA Prohibited Substances maximizing security for competitive athletes and continue to be the only certification provider to test for an additional 220 prescription, OTC, and illicit drugs adding significant protection for all consumers. We have more than 500 products certified in over 60 countries today and enjoy working with some of the top brands in the nutrition space.
2020 has been a crazy year for all of us. We are grateful that interest in third-party certification has continued to expand this year despite all the challenges. This year has presented a number of changes in consumer attitudes. When it comes to nutritional supplements consumers have taken matters into their own hands and are spending a lot more time researching products and looking for those that can support their overall health and wellness. As they do so certifications like ours really help products stand out in the crowd and build trust among consumers that are looking for high quality products to fill their growing demands for nutritional support.”

Why RAW Nutrition and Revive MD Chose to Become BSCG Certified
At the end of October 2020, Matt and Domenic announced RAW Nutrition and Revive MD is officially BSCG certified. This means all of their products are third-party tested to ensure they don’t contain any banned ingredients. This allows both professional and collegiate athletes, along with general consumers, to use RAW Nutrition and Revive MD supplements without fear of failing a drug test.
When we asked Matt why they decided to become BSCG certified, here’s what he had to say:
“The honest truth is we wanted to invest the time, money, and resources to be able to provide the best for those who entrusted themselves to supporting our brand. Secondly, we wanted to not put ourselves in a corner and really be able to expand both horizontally and vertically who our products can support.
Dom and I are huge sports fans and it would mean so much to us to be able to provide these products to top athletes to help them maintain an elite level of performance and in order for us to be able to have that opportunity we needed this certification as its viewed as the best so this was a no brainer for us.”
-Matt Jansen, Co-founder Revive MD and RAW Nutrition
Since Revive MD and RAW Nutrition don’t use banned ingredients in any of their products, they wanted to go the extra mile to ensure there’s no cross-contamination. Both companies already work with high-level athletes, but in order for them to reach certain organizations, such as the NCAA, NFL, or NBA, it was crucial to obtain the BSCG Drug-Free Certification. Revive MD and RAW Nutrition want to help and reach as many people as possible, and becoming BSCG certified was a step in the right direction.
