After writing a product breakdown of RAW Nutrition’s fully loaded pre-workout, what better way to continue our coverage than with their solid protein powder. From what we’ve seen so far, RAW Nutrition takes a slightly different approach with every product they release. For example, instead of coming out with a pre-workout loaded with stimulants, RAW Nutrition decided to emphasize pump, focus, and performance. Since this is a protein powder, we’re going to break this section up into protein sources and other ingredients, such as flavoring.

  • Protein Source – 100% Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate

    There are several whey protein isolates on the market, but very few are 100% grass fed. This means that the cows that produce the whey consume grass throughout their lifespan, which is typically healthier for cattle because it’s part of their natural diet.

    Grain-fed cows, on the other hand, are still grass-fed to a certain extent. However, in order to get cattle to grow faster and fatten up, the farmer adds grain to their diet. Cows are evolved to only eat grass, so grains create a lot of inflammation and can cause illness.

    Beyond ethical reasons, the biggest difference between grass-fed and grain-fed cattle is product quality, fatty acid profile, and cost. Grass fed protein products, such as milk, cheese, yogurt, meat, and whey protein, tend to cost more, but they’re also higher quality.

    Whey protein: How it’s made

    Whey protein is a byproduct of cheese production. Milk naturally contains 80% casein and 20% whey, but in order to make cheese, the casein and whey must be separated. Therefore, casein curds are removed from liquid whey through specialized processing techniques.

    Casein goes on to be used in cheese production while whey protein is further processed to remove unwanted carbohydrates, fats, and lactose. Finally, in order to manufacture a powder, protein must be spray-dried. Depending on the level of processing, three types of whey protein can be created—whey protein concentrate (WPC), whey protein isolate (WPI), and whey protein hydrolysate (WPH).

    Whey protein concentrate is less processed, but can contain anywhere from 25% to 89% protein content by weight, meaning the remaining content is made up of carbohydrates, lactose, and fats.[1] The most processed form of whey protein, WPH, is pre-digested, which allows the protein peptide chains to be smaller and digested/absorbed quicker. Whey protein isolate is at least 90% or more protein by weight. Therefore, it’s a more pure source of protein and only contains minimal amounts of carbs, fats, and lactose.[1]

    Although there are pros and cons to every type of protein source, RAW Nutrition set out to formulate a protein powder that’s almost entirely protein, so WPI was a great option.

    Benefits of Grass-Fed WPI

    Because RAW Protein is a whey protein isolate and contains minimal amounts of fat, it’s not worth making the argument that grass fed whey has a more favorable fatty acid profile. Meaning that it contains higher amounts of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids compared to inflammatory-inducing omega-6 fatty acids.[2]

    However, grass-fed cows tend to be healthier, they’re treated better, live longer, and produce higher quality protein products. Therefore, RAW Nutrition decided to use the best source of protein available for their RAW Protein formula.

    Other benefits of using WPI is that it’s rich in all nine essential amino acids—especially leucine, the amino acid primarily responsible for initiating muscle protein synthesis. Whey protein isolate digests rapidly. So it’s able to deliver amino acids to muscles quickly to kickstart recovery.

    Lastly, WPI contains very minimal amounts of lactose. Even people who experience gastrointestinal distress with other dairy products can still reap the benefits of a high quality whey protein powder!

    Overall, we’re glad to see that RAW Nutrition decided to use a 100% grass-fed whey protein isolate as the only protein source for RAW Protein. It shows that they want nothing but the best for athletes and other consumers.

  • Other Ingredients

    A few simple ingredients helps make RAW Protein taste like a delicious vanilla milkshake, digest easily, and mix well. First, it’s naturally flavored and sweetened with a combination of Sweetly Stevia and steviol glycosides. Sweetly Stevia is a company based out of the UK and specializes in producing and supplying steviol glycoside extracts.[3]

    Sweetly Stevia LogoSweetly Stevia is an excellent zero calorie alternative to sugar since it’s made from organic non-GMO stevia leaves and is gluten-free, alcohol-free, chemical-free, lactose-free, and diabetic friendly.[3] Sweetening a product with stevia is usually more expensive than using artificial sweeteners like sucralose, but RAW Nutrition refused to compromise on product health and quality.

    RAW Nutrition also added a non-dairy sunflower creamer and xanthan gum to achieve a thicker and creamier consistency. It’s definitely needed since a whey protein isolate tends to be thin and watery. Lastly, to ensure that you properly absorb the protein and have no digestive issues, RAW Nutrition added both a lactase enzyme and papain! Lactase is responsible for breaking down lactose, a sugar found in milk. Papain is a protease enzyme that helps metabolize protein.

    In summary, to keep RAW Protein as simple as possible, RAW Nutrition added just enough additional ingredients to capture the flavor, consistency, and sweetness they were after and nothing more! It’s not that easy to find a high quality grass fed whey protein isolate that’s naturally flavored and sweetened, which is why RAW Nutrition made their own.
