Tongkat Ali Extract (Eurycoma longifolia)(root) – 500 mg
Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia), also known as Longjack, is a plant native to the Southeastern Asian peninsula, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It has been used over time in Ayurveda and other traditional herbal medicine practices for conditions ranging from itches to fevers and even gastrointestinal distress. However, there are extracts from the root parts that have been used to help promote sexual function either as an aphrodisiac or to improve blood pressure.[1] Is there truth behind this?
The answer is yes — research shows that tongkat ali has demonstrated support for improving symptoms of erectile dysfunction and boosting testosterone levels in older men.[2,3] A key contributor to this was the pairing of concurrent training which resulted in more improvement than tongkat ali or training alone. As we all should know, dietary supplements are supplemental to nutrition, exercise, and sleep. What’s better than 100%? 110%, of course!
Tongkat ali and testosterone
In a systematic review published in 2016, tongkat ali showed some improvement for male hypogonadism, a clinical term for reduced serum testosterone levels.[4] The studies highlighted inside weren’t all short, either — one was six months long with 45 male participants,[2] and another had 32 males averaging 24 years old,[5] and another showed increases in total testosterone (but not free testosterone) after testing a whopping 105 older men for 12 weeks.[6]
Additionally, tongkat ali reduced stress, anger, and other “negative” moods in men and women alike and increased testosterone in men.[7] Improvements in hormone profiles and mood states may help against the consequences of chronic stress and maintain the benefits of nutrition, exercise, and sleep.
Even more data: Another study not included in the above meta-analysis showed an incredible 37% increase in salivary testosterone levels compared to placebo after 4 weeks of using 200 milligrams of tongkat ali in stressed men and women![8] See the image below:
Although more research is always required, the effects on testosterone are promising. Now, a look at its muscle building benefits:
Tongkat ali and body composition
While there are many studies that focus on improving the well-being and physiological function of older individuals, tongkat ali supplementation in younger individuals also shows promise. One such study found that participants combining tongkat ali with resistance training increased lean body mass, decreased percentage body fat, and improved both the strength and size of the measured arm muscles.[9]
Constituents and mechanisms of action
So what’s making all of this happen? Two of the reviews above both highlight the the same constituents inside:[1,4]
“E. longifolia is a rich source of various classes of bioactive compounds, which includes quassinoids, β-carboline alkaloids, canthin-6-one alkaloids, triterpene-type tirucallane, squalene derivatives, and eurycolactone, eurycomalactone, laurycolactone, biphenyl neolignan and bioactive steroids.”[1]
In terms of mechanism, one review points out that longjack’s testosterone-enhancing effects lead to other downstream benefits (such as anti-osteoperotic effects) and as well as nitric oxide generation and antioxidant properties.[1]
A massive 500 milligram dose!
There’s one thing to keep in mind about these studies. The doses used averaged between 100 to 200 milligrams. Epibolic contains over twice that amount at 500 milligrams. Not to worry though, as doses up to 600 milligrams per day have been found to be safe against toxicity for blood profiles and liver and renal function.[7]

Epicatechins 90% (Camellia sinensis)(leaf) – 100 mg
Another useful ingredient in this formula is one we’ve seen gain some traction in the industry over the past decade, epicatechin, which is scientifically known as (−)-epicatechin and sometimes colloquially called. Epicatechin is a flavanol and like other polyphenols, it was found to have antioxidant properties that could reduce the damage caused by free radicals.[10] These properties could also help support the health of endothelial cells, the cells that line blood vessels walls.[11] If you’re looking to protect your cardiovascular health, this could be for you.
These benefits also help in supporting skeletal muscle tissue growth and preservation. Individuals afflicted with the detriments of aging, namely sarcopenia (age-related muscle-loss), could find some relief from the muscle-supporting effects of epicatechin. Between human and animal trials, the results for slowing, halting, or reversing the effects of sarcopenia were positive.[12] This is a point of interest for individuals younger and older alike looking to build or maintain muscle as you age.
One last note about epicatechin, it has some noteworthy contributions to insulin sensitivity and blood pressure.[13] This is especially important when we consider the previous two benefits. Keeping insulin sensitivity in check and not building up insulin resistance is important for the anabolic process, but is also important for healthy testosterone levels. There’s a correlation between low T, type 2 diabetes, and high insulin resistance.[14] Like tongkat ali, epicatechin has some good research backing its support for muscular and hormone health.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) – 50 mg
Lastly, Epibolic contains a helpful androgen precursor known as dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA. When men and women reach certain age thresholds, typically in the late thirties to early forties, the production of their sex-related hormones, testosterone and estrogen, starts to decrease.
For men, decreases in testosterone production can lead to decreased muscle mass, increased fat mass, hair loss, and mental decline.[15] For women, decreases in estrogen production often lead to conditions such as osteoporosis, muscular atrophy, fat mass accumulation, hot flashes, and mental decline.[16]
DHEA supplementation could provide hormone support to maintain healthy structural functions, especially when paired with exercise. Also, DHEA has a modulator role for many functions including blood vessel function, insulin sensitivity, and structural health.[17] There’s a trend going on here and some potential synergy in the mix. The health of your muscles, sex hormones, blood vessels, insulin, and brain are important whether you’re 25 or 52.
Dosage and Directions
Primeval Labs recommends taking one serving (2 capsules) with 12-16 ounces of water once daily. They also recommend not exceeding more than one serving within 24 hours.
Stacking? Absolutely
It goes without saying that you can take it alongside Primeval Labs’ Ape Sh*t pre-workout supplement, and for even more natty gains, you can stack in their RipFACTOR-powered Primavar supplement, which was updated around the same time as Epibolic.
Conclusion: Primeval Labs has a Triple Threat Contender!
On the surface, Primeval Labs delivers a straightforward formula with a trio of ingredients ready to pack a punch for your exercise performance. The added benefits below the surface are what help this product shine even brighter than before. The higher-than-usual dose of tongkat ali might be center stage, but it has some great support from epicatechin and DHEA. Whether you’re young or old, man or woman, cutting or bulking, Epibolic is a knockout addition to your regimen!
