PEScience Select Protein Powder: A Constant Top-Rated Protein

PEScience Protein Strawberry Cheesecake

Strawberry Cheesecake PEScience Protein is out… but hurry, this one may not last forever

One of the companies with a massive fan favorite protein powder is none other than PEScience. Although they originally lacked a huge list of flavor menu in comparison to the likes of corporations like Optimum Nutrition or MuscleTech, PEScience Select Protein’s flavor options can stand alongside any of the best-tasting clean protein powders on the market – and they have a crazy high protein-by-weight score to match.

PEScience has been teasing fans for weeks now with this new flavor, and it sounds delicious. If you’re considering this as your next protein, you need to act fast because PEScience’s website states this is a limited time flavor!

Strawberry Cheesecake Select Protein is here!

A victory for fans with a sweet tooth, many companies have tried to replicate a quality strawberry cheesecake taste… but failed while doing it. Too often, the flavor ends up as a cross of strawberry and vanilla with none of that “cheesecake” love.

But if PES’s history is an indication, this flavor should be a quality taste for anyone, since they’ve been doing it right since the beginning.

On to today’s Select Protein Flavors

PEScience had six flavors for its Select Protein prior to the Strawberry Cheesecake release. Below is a complete up-to-date listing:

PEScience MySelect

Did you know that you can see lab test data on PEScience’s proteins?!

Adding Strawberry Cheesecake to the mix gave PEScience a slight foot in the fruit flavored category, but the flavor will still appeal to the fat kids inside us all.

    More about Select Protein

PES Select Protein is a premium whey and casein blend. Usually, a combination of the two types of protein will lead to a much more balanced taste and thickness than that of a casein or isolate protein on its own (generally, isolates will be thinner in consistency and caseins will be thicker).

It can be difficult to strike the proper ratio of each, but we have recently seen many companies take this “blend” approach. Being said, PEScience Select Protein always strikes a great balance with its blend and the consistency of its shakes are spot on when mixed with either milk or water.

Of course, companies can add xanthum gum, guar gum, or something similar to thicken an isolate or otherwise “thinner” protein, but that also takes up precious room in the tub that PES would rather put towards protein.

Just remember, as “high-efficiency” protein blends like this one have become more popular, PES was one of the first to do it, and they’ve been expanding their line all along.

    PEScience Protein Nutrition Facts

    PEScience Protein Ingredients

Ultra clean ingredients – using the casein itself as a thickener helps require less extra fluff!

Strawberry Cheesecake Select Protein comes in at:

    • 120 calories
    • 4g of carbohydrates
    • 24g of protein
    • 1g of fat
    • 2g of sugar

Compare that to your standard piece of cheesecake! The nutrition falls in line with the other Select Protein flavors and it should be well received that the product has only 1g of fat for a product that likely has a cream cheese taste – hopefully.

    Select Protein Ingredients

Looking at the ingredient label, the first ingredient listed is the protein blend.

    • Ultra-Pure Milk Protein Isolate

The first protein in the blend is Ultra-Pure Milk Protein Isolate. This is comprised of casein and whey protein, filtered (isolated) to remove as much lactose and fat as possible.

    • Premium WPC-80

The top tier of quality whey protein concentrate, Whey Protein Concentrate 80 (WPC-80) consists of 80% protein by weight.

This is a relief when looking at a label, because whey protein concentrate can be as low as 34% protein by weight, and seeing “whey protein concentrate” all alone is a proprietary blend in and of itself, since it can be a blend of cheap forms of concentrate that change from batch to batch.

    • Leucine Peptides

We know Leucine is a must-have BCAA for stimulating muscle protein synthesis (MPS).[1] So, you would naturally assume more Leucine in your protein shake is a good thing, right?

Normally when we see “whey peptides” on a label, we raise our eyebrows a tad — more on this coming in the near future. However, we have the advantage with Select Protein to know that the peptides included are direct leucine peptides which are derived straight from Milk Protein Isolate… and not potentially something like lesser-effective glutamine peptides.

Long story short, we’ll take a bit more leucine in our protein, BCAA, or EAA drinks, peptide-bound or not.

    • Flavorings

PES Select Protein 4 Oats Marie Wold

PES Athlete Marie Wold is all smiles over the Protein 4 Oats…will the public be as pleased with the product?

To finish off the label, it lists out the flavoring and thickening agents Natural and Artificial Flavors, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Cocoa Powder, Guar Gum, Sucralose, and Acesulfame Potassium.

These are common additions for a whey protein, although we’d rather see pure natural flavors on the label. We understand they are components of companies’ flavoring mechanisms, but the industry is moving towards more “natural” product options. Cheesecake may not be the easiest to do without ‘cheating’ though.

    No amino acid profile?

The label also does not list off the average amino acid content per serving, but we know we are getting added leucine via the leucine peptides so it should look pretty good. PEScience has not done this with any protein, but as the market trends towards full label transparency, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the company and others begin to do so.

Great protein for baking? We assume..

PES Select Protein has always been a popular protein to cook or bake with, and this flavor will be in line with the others, because the ingredients are so similar.

    Final Thoughts

Overall, PEScience has added some unique protein options to the market in the past couple of years. The company first offered Vegan Select Protein, a “café” series of coffee inspired flavors, and the most recent addition, the Protein 4 Oats powder to power up your oatmeal with some extra protein!

The Strawberry Cheesecake option should be a delicious tasting option for thrill seekers looking to stick with a protein blend but are also tired of the standard chocolate and vanilla flavors available. Remember, it is a limited time flavor. If you are considering buying it, you may want to do so before it is gone and you’re stuck searching for it on eBay!
