NutraBio Micellar Casein Strawberry

Strawberry flavor systems are tough to nail. Thankfully, NutraBio has Michael Perez, who has done that and then some.

The story behind casein

While NutraBio’s most well-known for their 100% Whey Protein Isolate (especially those new Breakfast Series flavors), micellar casein is a whole other beast.

When separating milk, you get both the curds and the whey. It’s the curds that compromise a larger majority of the product (milk protein is 80% casein and 20% whey), and the casein from the curd portion provides tons of protein too. Of interest to us, it’s a far thicker, slower digesting protein to boot. With proper timing, we can use that to our advantage.

When the thicker casein is digested, it creates a “gel” like substance in your small intestine, and takes longer to break down. With this, you get a slower, more methodical “amino acid drip” that takes a good portion of the day to get through.

Epic for bedtime: Keep your muscles in positive nitrogen balance!

While this may not sound great before a workout, but it is great before bed!

NutraBio Micellar Casein Strawberry Ice Cream Ingredients

As always, a fully-disclosed label from NutraBio! We;re curious about testing the blood sugar impact…

Because of this, we also believe that there may be a bit less of a blood sugar impact with casein protein, but we’ll be testing that on ourselves to find out.

The Macros

  • Calories: 120
  • Fat: 1g
  • Carbohydrate: 2g (1g sugar)
  • Protein: 25g (from 31.65g micellar casein)

As always with NutraBio, expect the huge list of “No’s” — No fillers or excipients, no protein spiking, no proprietary blends, no inferior caseinate, no added sugars, no gluten or BSE/TSE, no maltodextrin or dextrose, no banned substances, no artificial colors, and no hidden ingredients!

The story behind the Strawberry

This flavor replaces NutraBio’s wild strawberry flavor, which just wasn’t cutting it given how fantastically the brand’s flavorist, Michael Perez, has been putting together flavors.

NutraBio Micellar Casein Protein

The ultimate nighttime protein… but can also be used between meals!

This flavor uses only a natural flavoring system, with natural coloring coming from beet powder. As with all NutraBio supplements, it’s a full disclosure label, so we know there’s also sweetener added in the form of 80mg sucralose and 100mg acesulfame potassium.

Case in point: the Strawberry Ice Cream flavor of 100% Whey Protein Isolate. That was the initial new flavor release from the 2019 NutraBio onslaught, and it put the industry on notice, because it’s a strawberry that nearly everyone will enjoy — not an easy task with such a difficult flavor.

If this is anything similar, then get ready.

Extreme Mass Strawberry Pastry is a bit different

Meanwhile, NutraBio’s weight gainer also got a new flavor when Mark Glazier and crew launched Extreme Mass in Strawberry Pastry flavor. While that flavor smelled like the above 100% Whey Isolate flavor system, it definitely had a little bit of “crust” or “batter” or “graham cracker” add-on to it, and was downright phenomenal. We don’t expect that with this casein protein.

You can watch that review below, although we don’t think it’ll be as comparable:

Looking to slam some big pre workout calories on a budget, but keep the protein quality high? NutraBio Extreme Mass is for you.

Don’t count casein out

Despite casein having a slightly lower amount of leucine, it’s really quite comparable, and we think it’s far too underrated of a protein. It’s fantastic if you know you’re going to have a long wait between meals and don’t want to enter a fast too empty-stomached.

Some of you may really want to test the long-lasting protein’s ability to keep blood glucose down, which is a goal for many low-carb dieters as well.
