Six Star Nutrition Joint & Muscle Recovery is a new joint supplement that uses effectively dosed new age ingredient to improve joint health.

    • OptiMSM®

      Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), also known as dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2) and methyl sulfone, is an organic sulfur-containing compound necessary for optimal health. OptiMSM® is the industry leading proprietary standard for MSM used in a variety of joint formulas around the industry. Even better, it’s got human studies backing its efficacy in reducing soreness and joint pain!

      Early research into OptiMSM® showed that at 3g/day (the same dose used here!) reduced post-exercise muscle and joint pain at clinically significant levels compared to placebo![1,2] More recent research into the analgesic has shown that not only is it great for relief from pain, but it also acts as a great recovery agent.

      A recent 2015 trial appearing in the Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research experienced significant decreases in oxidative stress (a key marker of muscle damage) at 2 hours and 24 hours post-workout compared to subjects using a placebo.[3]

      There’s some cool stuff brewing here for OptiMSM, and we’re starting to think that it’s not just your grandfather’s joint supplement!

      This is certainly a very intriguing ingredient that hasn’t gotten much press from other joint formulas we’ve covered. We’re going to have to do more digging into this one!

      We believe there’s a good story here, and clearly need to do more research on this ingredient.

      OptiMSM Logo

      OptiMSM is a proprietarily-processed form of MSM that’s showing promising results in several human trials. Stick around for more info on this one!

      It turns out that OptiMSM® is manufactured by Bergstrom Nutrition, and all of their manufacturing is here in the United States. This is quite extraordinary given the amount of manufacturing currently done in countries such as China and India over the past decade.

      But more importantly, we clearly missed a lot of these human based studies, not realizing that there are serious sports nutrition implications with OptiMSM®, and are starting to wonder why we haven’t seen it in a post-workout supplement as well. We will be definitely be digging deeper on this one, so stay tuned. Until then, OptiMSM.com and BergstromNutrition.com are great resources.

    • White Willow extract

      White willow bark has traditionally been used as a pain reliever as the plant contains salicin, a precursor to aspirin.[4] It just so happens that the particular extract included in Six Star Joint & Muscle Recovery has been standardized for said salicin, which has been shown in research to provide pain relief similar to that of aspirin.[5,6]

      Additionally, white willow also exhibits some anti-inflammatory properties[4], but it’s primarily included for the natural aspirin precursor, salicylic acid to help ease any aches and pains you may get from intense training or nagging sports injuries.

      So now we have post-workout recovery as well as pain covered from two angles. What’s left? Collagen support:

    • UC-II® Standardized Collagen (40mg)

      Our last ingredient is yet another ingredient rarely seen in any joint health formula. UC-II® contains a patented form of undenatured type II collagen derived from chicken sternum that supplies 10mg total collagen.

      Much has been speculated about the benefits of taking collagen for joint pain, but UC-II® actually has the human-based research to prove its effectiveness.

      UC-II Knee Extension

      UC-II significantly increases range of motion on knee extensions compared to subjects using a placebo.[9]

      One of the earliest studies performed on UC-II® found that “Significant pain reduction including morning stiffness, stiffness following periods of rest, pain that worsens with use of the affected joint and loss of joint range of motion and function was observed.”[7]

      As research into the compound evolved, researchers began to compare it to other common joint support ingredients such as glucosamine and chondroitin. A 2009 study found that UC-II® was more effective than glucosamine and chondroitin in the treatment of osteoarthritis.[8]

      Lastly, but most pertinent to this supplement, UC-II® was used in combination with a training protocol where researchers noted significant increases in the test groups range of motion on knee extensions compared to subjects using a placebo (81 vs 74 degrees).[9] The same study also documented significant increases in the test group’s time to onset of initial joint discomfort during exercise compared to the baseline!

Dosing

Take 2 servings (6 capsules) with a glass of water daily. Do not exceed 6 capsules in a 24-hour period. Read the entire label before use and follow directions provided.

Takeaway

Our joints get subjected to a lot of wear and tear — bending, standing, squatting, crouching, etc. — and that NOT including exercise induces stress on joints, ligaments, and tendons. While most of us are focused on Best Pre Workout or Best Protein Powder, what we should really be focused on are “the best supplements to ensure lifelong health and function.”
