The last time we covered a product from the hardcore brand Apollon Nutrition, we generated quite a stir. The reason for the brouhaha was over their 600mg caffeine pre workout Hooligan, which aside from the ridiculously high energy load, was actually very well dosed.

Today we return with another product from the guys in Jersey, but don’t worry, there’s no stims this time around. Enigma is Apollon Nutrition’s comprehensive post workout formula to rebuild the muscles broken down following a hard training session powered by the Hooligan.

But thanks to a completely open, full-transparency label, there’s no “Enigma” when reading the ingredients.

In line with the brand’s commitment to full transparency, Apollon has fully disclosed everything on their label (including sweeteners, flavorings, and the rest!). Enigma is well dosed and packs many of the most prominent recovery agents available today.

  • L-Glutamine (5g)

    Like all supplements from Apollon, Enigma is fully disclosed meaning you get EVERYTHING listed on the label from actives to inactives.

    During high intensity exercise, glutamine can become depleted, which can impact performance, muscle growth, and recovery. However, supplementing with glutamine keeps amino acid stores at optimal levels, which should help combat fatigue and accelerate recovery.[1]

    Glutamine is hit or miss for people though, as research shows it’s not terribly bioavailable (it’s usually gobbled up by the stomach), unless it’s paired alongside L-Alanine. So, while it never hurts to add some glutamine to your post workout drink, we’re not sure if there’s a ton of benefits either.

    Clearly though, if you’re a fan of glutamine, you’re off to a good start with Enigma. We’ll need more, so here it comes:

  • BCAAs 3:1:1 (6g)

    Enigma includes a beefy 6g of 3:1:1 BCAAs, which means that each serving yields 3.6g of Leucine, 1.2g of Isoleucine, and 1.2g of Valine. The 3.6g worth of Leucine is key, as it is the primary activator of mTOR in the body, which drives muscle protein synthesis and repair.[2]

    While the debate for BCAAs rages on over whether their truly effective or not, some of the research at least stands in favor of BCAAs for accelerating recovery and reducing DOMS.[3,4]

  • Creatine HCl (2g)

    Hooligan + Enigma makes a powerful pre and post workout combo from Apollon Nutrition.

    Hooligan included 2g worth of Creatine HCl, and with Enigma, you’re getting another 2g, which puts you right in the “sweet spot” of the daily recommended 3-5g of creatine.

    Not much needs to be said about Creatine that you don’t already know. It’s the most studied, and proven effective, supplement available and it supports all other areas of athletic performance (strength, power, endurance, etc.). So, we’ll just keep moving right along with the rest of the ingredient breakdown.

    Our biggest point again is that we want to see 3-5g creatine per day, so the Hooligan-Enigma stack looks sound, even if you can’t get a full scoop of Hooligan in due to its crazy 600mg caffeine content!

  • L-Carnitine L-Tartrate (2g)

    L-Carnitine L-Tartrate (LCLT) is one of the more prominent and proven recovery aids out there that’s effective for reducing DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).

    It’s also a powerful natural muscle builder, as it enhances the density of your body’s androgen receptors in skeletal muscle tissue.[5,6] Basically, LCLT makes your anabolic hormones (i.e. testosterone) more efficient, meaning more growth and gains from your training sessions!

    When it comes to all of the choices in L-Carnitine (ie ALCAR vs. straight L-Carnitine vs. LCLT), L-Carnitine L-Tartrate is the one that athletes chasing gains should go after!

  • Betaine Anhydrous (1.5g)

    Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine (TMG), is a derivative of choline that is a vital methyl donor in the body. Its primary job is the methylation of homocysteine to the amino acid of methionine[7], which is essential to creatine production and muscle protein synthesis.

    Additionally, betaine also improves power, endurance, and strength.[8,9,10] Plus, it can even reduce soreness, which is why it’s useful to include in a post workout formula!

  • Taurine (1g)
