Select Protein is real-deal protein: NOT spiked with free form amino acids!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve disclosed several of the class action lawsuits associated with amino acid spiking.

Enough of the bad news. It’s time for some really good news:

PES Select Protein has been proven to be 100% free of amino acid spiking.[1]

It was submitted to the Stack3d Certified protein program on November 24, 2014[2], where the following lab results were disclosed:

Lab test results

  • NO free form amino acids were found.

This includes alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, cystine, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine*, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, threonine, tyrosine, valine, beta alanine, citrulline, norvaline, taurine, and creatine.

  • 24.64g of protein were found – which is actually 0.64g (2.667%) above spec!

The results are directly available to our social media fans below:

Vindication in the PricePlow Review

This is great to hear, since Select Protein is all over the place in our Top 10 Protein Powder and protein buyer’s guide.

I also recently recorded a PES Select Protein Review on YouTube, taste-testing each of the three ingredients:

Now we know there’s some lab results behind that crazy awesome Cookies & Cream flavor.

*What about the Leucine Peptides added?

The lab results above show that there was no free form amino acids — including free-form leucine.

There is an added ingredient to Select Protein, though: PepForm™ leucine peptides. Since they’re peptide-bonded, they aren’t shown as free-form, and will be listed under the protein calculations.

This could possibly be the reason why the results are over 24g protein – there could be about a half a gram (or even more) of these added to the mix.

Added BCAAs are good

PES’ Snickerdoodle flavor lookin real smooth from my review

As mentioned in our original article on amino acid spiking, we’re typically happy to know when any of the BCAAs are added to a protein powder. We prefer to know how much, but the BCAAs (especially leucine), are the anabolic triggers and the most important aminos to anyone trying to build or maintain muscle.

But it’s worth noting that chemically speaking, leucine is 21% nitrogen, which is more than your average protein. It could throw the calculations off a little bit here, and that’s likely why we have 24.64g protein.

We’ll see if PES cares to comment on this nuance any further, but at the end of the day, this is a proven high-quality protein that we absolutely love.

About the Stack3d Certified Protein Program

Most of our readers know Stack3d, the incredible supplement news site that we love to jibber-jabber with.

After learning about the ongoing protein spiking scams, they used their market position to begin the Stack3d Certified program.

How it works

Stack3d Supplement News

Stack3d saves the day with their fair and balanced certification program

The process goes like this:

  1. A company asks Stack3d to get their protein tested, and states that they will allow the lab results to be posted live without fear of legal retribution.
  2. Stack3d gets a quote for the appropriate testing. Testing is not cheap – think $2000.
  3. The company pays Stack3d for the lab test. Genysis Labs is currently the lab used.[3]
  4. Stack3d then orders the protein from a random online store, such as any of those listed on PricePlow. This is to mimic how you or I would buy it normally. They have it shipped directly to the testing lab.
  5. The lab then reports the results, which you’re looking at on this page.

This is a great solution for a third-party test. The manufacturer takes on the high cost (consider it a marketing investment), but they cannot influence the test (except for producing nothing but high-quality products in the first place).

We hope to see more and more protein powders get tested this thoroughly, and want to eventually line our top protein list with nothing but certified products over time.

Congrats to PES for being one of the first!
