Kaged Muscle Pre-Kaged Sport Ingredients

There aren’t many that offer a pre workout specifically for competitive athletes. CEO Kris Gethin and formulator/scientist Brian Rand saw a huge gap in the supplement industry and decided to fill it with Pre-kaged Sport!

The formula is simple, yet effective — it contains various trademarked ingredients to boost performance, energy, focus, and promote hydration. It’s banned-substance free, third-party tested, naturally flavored and colored, and uses high-quality ingredients trusted in the supplement industry.

Here’s what’s in one serving (13.3g) of Pre-Kaged Sport:

Sport-Performance Matrix

  • L-Citrulline (fermented) – 3.5g

    Pre-Kaged Sport starts out with the Sports-Performance Matrix, which consists of L-citrulline, beta alanine, and betaine anhydrous.

    The first ingredient we’re going to discuss is none other than L-citrulline. Kaged Muscle specifies that they’re using fermented L-citrulline, meaning that it’s derived from plants opposed to animal sources. You’ll notice that anytime Kaged Muscle puts an amino acid into their product, it always says “fermented” next to it — just another factor that sets Kaged Muscle apart from their competition.

    L-citrulline is one of the most popular ingredients in pre workout supplements. Normally, when we discuss L-citrulline, we highlight how incredible it is at helping you get epic pumps. However, in the context of sports, L-citrulline can also significantly enhance performance by increasing blood flow to the active muscles — resulting in greater delivery of oxygen, nutrients, and more efficient removal of metabolic waste products, such as lactic acid.[1] L-citrulline works by increasing L-arginine levels, then L-arginine gets converted into nitric oxide (NO) via nitric oxide synthase.[1,2] NO tells the blood vessels to expand, allowing blood flow to move more efficiently throughout the body.

    3.5g is a clinically-verified dose, and many should notice some improvements in overall performance. For example, a study published in 2016 found that just 2.4g of L-citrulline supplementation per day significantly increased plasma L-arginine levels, reduced completion time of a 4km cycling race, decreased feelings of muscular fatigue, and enhanced concentration in trained cyclists.[1]

    In some pre workouts, you’ll see L-citrulline dosed as high as 6g, however as we mentioned previously, L-citrulline drastically enhances your ability to get a pump and for certain sports, that may actually be suboptimal. (If you want those crazy doses, that’s what the original Pre-Kaged is for.)

  • Beta-Alanine (as CarnoSyn) – 1.6g

    The next ingredient in Pre-Kaged Sport is CarnoSyn beta alanine. While many brands use generic beta alanine since it’s cheaper, Kaged Muscle wants to guarantee that they’re getting the highest-quality, trusted form of beta alanine on the market, so they use CarnoSyn exclusively.

    If you’ve ever taken a pre workout and felt a tingling sensation, it’s likely that there’s a fair amount of beta alanine in the formula. That tingling sensation is called paresthesia — some people love it, while others could go without — but beta alanine is too good of an ingredient to leave out!

    One of the main reasons why beta alanine is included in Pre-Kaged Sport is due to the fact that it significantly enhances intramuscular carnosine levels, which leads to improved performance.[3] Carnosine is a dipeptide molecule that’s composed of two amino acids — L-histidine and beta alanine.[3]

    One of its primary functions is buffering lactic acid in an effort to maintain a normal pH level.[3] During exercise, metabolites start to accumulate causing a drop in the body’s pH level. A more acidic environment negatively affects the muscle’s ability to contract and generate a sufficient amount of ATP (adenosine triphosphate).[3] Lactic acid accumulation is one of the major drivers of muscular fatigue and decreased performance.

    A large body of evidence suggests that supplementing with beta alanine enhances levels of carnosine, resulting in greater buffering of lactic acid.[3] Thus, beta alanine has been shown to increase endurance, strength, and attenuate neuromuscular fatigue.[3] All great things for someone who needs to last a long time for a sporting event!

  • Betaine Anhydrous (as BetaPower) – 1.25g

    To round out the Sports-Performance Matrix, we have 1.25g of the trademarked form of betaine anhydrous — BetaPower. Just like with beta alanine, the majority of brands use a generic form of betaine, but at this point, you should be getting an idea of how Kaged Muscle operates!

    Before jumping into what betaine is, how it works, and it’s benefits, we have to address the dosage first.

    1.25g is roughly half the amount that we would recommend because the clinical trials, which report significant improvements in body composition and performance use 2.5g per day.[4] Unfortunately, Pre-Kaged Sport is under that mark here, and in order to get the full benefits from this ingredient, you’ll need to get another 1.25g from elsewhere. However, if you pair Pre-Kaged Sport with Re-Kaged after your workout, then you’ll be all set since Re-Kaged contains 2.5g of BetaPower and 28g of protein.

    With that covered, let’s see what betaine is capable of!

    Betaine is an organic osmolyte, meaning that it helps maintain fluid homeostasis within cells, leading to better hydration and improved resilience to outside stressors.[4] Another key role that betaine performs in the body is serving as a methyl donor.[4]

    Studies show that betaine is capable of transferring one of its methyl groups to a non-proteinogenic amino acid called homocysteine.[4] Homocysteine is endogenously produced in the body, and excessively high levels are linked to negative effects. Once homocysteine accepts the methyl group from betaine, it gets converted into methionine — an amino acid that serves as a precursor to creatine production.[4] More creatine can definitely enhance performance, so that’s ideal!

    It’s well established that betaine anhydrous supplementation improves performance, enhances body composition, power, strength, and endurance[4-7] – all important attributes for several team sports! But remember, those studies all use 2.5g/day. PricePlow is a huge fan of betaine, we’re just not a fan of this dosage, it’s the only ingredient in here that we would alter.

  • Taurine – 2g

    If there’s one thing that every athlete needs to be in order to perform at their best — it’s being hydrated! Dehydration can quickly cause a large drop off in performance, regardless of what sport you participate in and just throwing back a ton of water won’t make the cut. You need other compounds, such as electrolytes, in order to absorb and utilize the water properly. Fortunately, Kaged Muscle is looking out for you with the Cellular Hydration Matrix!

    The two key ingredients in this matrix includes taurine and coconut fruit water powder, but let’s first explain the benefits of taurine!

    Taurine is a sulfur containing β-amino acid that takes on several physiological roles within the body, including bile salt formation, calcium signaling, and osmoregulation.[8-10] It’s one of the most abundant amino acids within the body and is highly concentrated within the brain, muscles, eyes, and organs.[10] Several studies have shown that taurine expresses potent cytoprotective and antioxidant properties via membrane detoxification, stabilization, regulation of intracellular calcium levels.[8-10]

    Not only do these attributes offer health benefits, they also provide a multitude of performance benefits. For example, a meta-analysis from 2018 found that 1-6g of taurine supplementation significantly increased endurance in active individuals.[8]

    Although, taurine is technically classified as nonessential amino acid, since the body can endogenously produce it from another amino acid, cysteine — researchers would argue that taurine is an essential amino acid due to how many key physiological functions it facilitates.[10]

    Taurine is included in the Cellular Hydration Matrix because of how much it affects fluid volume within cells. Thus, it plays an important role in maintaining adequate hydration and electrolyte balance.[10] 2g is a great dose, so expect to see several performance health benefits from this ingredient!

  • Coconut Fruit Water Powder – 500mg

    On top of taurine, Kris Gethin and Brian Rand are also huge advocates for coconut water powder to facilitate optimal hydration!

    What’s the origin of pink lemonade? Who knows, but this flavor is terrific!

    Nowadays, it’s fairly common to find coconut water powder in several sports supplements, but Kaged Muscle was one of the first companies to put it on the map. It’s one of the key ingredients in Hydra Charge, an electrolyte supplement that’s easily one of Kaged Muscle’s best sellers.

    Research shows that since coconut water powder is rich in naturally occurring electrolytes, it’s extremely effective at promoting total body hydration.[11,12] As we discussed previously, electrolytes are essential for overall performance, muscle contractions, preventing muscle cramps, and helping your body retain the water you’re intaking. If you’re one of the thousands that suffers from muscle spasms or severe cramping, this could be a major game-changer for you.

    Furthermore, electrolyte imbalance can lead to decreased performance and excessive fatigue, which is not optimal when the game is on the line and you need to give everything you’ve got.     The final two ingredients in Pre-Kaged Sport are designed to optimize energy levels and give you better focus! The Energy & Focus Matrix is starting off with PricePlow’s preferred form of supplemental tyrosine — L-tyrosine!

    L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that’s added to a wide array of sports supplements, including pre workouts, nootropics, and sleep aids — to enhance the synthesis of three catecholamine neurotransmitters, including dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline.

    In general, neurotransmitters are chemical signals that facilitate cell to cell communication and are involved in nearly every physiological process.[13,14] Dopamine is linked to motivation, movement, emotions, and mood. Whereas, noradrenaline and adrenaline are key players in your sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which gets activated with exercise.

    THE SNS is also known as your “fight or flight” response, because once those catecholamines get released, your heart rate elevates, blood flow is shuttled to limbs to prepare for movement, digestion slows down, blood glucose levels rise, and lipolysis is enhanced. This is the way your body prepares to either fight or flight, but it’s also how it prepares to exercise or compete in sports.

    Intense bouts of prolonged exercise are known for depleting levels of neurotransmitters. Thus, supplementing with an outside source can be very beneficial. Studies have shown that L-tyrosine supplementation enhances athletic performance, boosts cognitive function, improves mood, and helps you adapt to stressful situations.[14]

    Although there are two types of tyrosine on the market, L-tyrosine and N-acetyl-L-Tyrosine, we’re glad to see that Kaged Muscle chose L-tyrosine since the research shows it’s more effective at boosting endogenous tyrosine levels due to superior bioavailability and absorption.[13]

  • Caffeine (as PurCaf) (caffeine from organic green coffee bean) – 188mg

    The last ingredient in Pre-Kaged Sport is caffeine, but it’s not your standard synthetic version that dominates the market. Kaged Muscle decided to use PurCaf — caffeine sourced from organic green coffee beans.

    Natural caffeine provides all of the same mental and performance boosting benefits as synthetic, however some people prefer it over other forms because it tends to cause a more slow and sustained increase in energy, opposed to a rapid spike and hard drop off. The last thing you want is to suffer from the dreaded crash half through a big game.

    Other benefits of using PurCaf opposed to other forms is that it’s GRAS-affirmed (generally recognized as safe), certified organic, and non-gmo verified.[15] PurCaf is undoubtedly one of the highest quality sources of caffeine available and it shows since Kaged Muscle uses it in several products.

    Regardless of the source of caffeine, it all works in the same way. Caffeine’s mechanism of action for increasing energy and performance is two-fold — it blocks adenosine from binding to its receptor and inhibits phosphodiesterase from breaking down cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate).[16]

    Caffeine readily crosses the blood brain barrier, which allows it to work on a much larger scale and be more effective.[16] Caffeine is the most researched ingredient in the sports supplement industry and it’s been shown time and time again to significantly boost both mental and physical performance.[16] Needless to say, if you want to get the most out of your training, adding in some caffeine is generally a good idea.
