As the name suggests, Revive MD Ashwagandha has one primary ingredient — KSM-66Bioperine is the secondary ingredient used to help boost absorption.

    KSM-66 is a trademarked, full-spectrum ashwagandha root extract that’s standardized to contain at least 5% withanolides—one of the product’s primary bioactive constituents.[1]

    Ashwagandha 101

    Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera, is an adaptogenic herb that’s been used for hundreds of years in Ayurvedic medicinal practices.[1] An adaptogen is any plant that can enhance your ability to deal with stress.[1] This is accomplished by restoring multiple physiological processes back to homeostasis when stress levels are elevated.

    “An adaptogen is a class of metabolic regulators which increase the ability of an organism to adapt to environmental factors and avoid damage from such factors.” Ideally, an adaptogen should: a) decrease stress-induced damage, b) be safe and produce a beneficial effect even if the number of administrations is more than required, c) be devoid of any negative effects such as withdrawal syndromes and d) not influence the normal body functions more than necessary.”[2]

    Ashwagandha actually means “smell of horse.” The herb got that name because its root emits a horse-like odor.[1] People used to believe that consuming ashwagandha would give them the strength and vitality of a horse.[1] Some even refer to ashwagandha as a “royal herb” due to its multifaceted nature—it affects the immune, neurological, reproductive, endocrine, and energy production systems.[1]

    Research shows that ashwagandha expresses a wide array of physiological properties, including antioxidant, anticancer, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, neuroprotective, antifungal, immunomodulatory, anxiolytic, anti-depressant, cardioprotective, cognitive enhancing, and anti-stress.[1]

    Ashwagandha can carry out all of these functions because it contains several biologically active constituents, such as withanolides and sitoindosides.[1] Although ashwagandha has several beneficial properties, we’ll mainly focus on its ability to reduce stress levels.

    Ashwagandha and Cortisol

    Several studies have shown that ashwagandha is extremely effective at lowering cortisol levels.[1,3] A 2012 study performed by a team of neuropsychiatrists found that 300 milligrams of ashwagandha supplementation taken twice per day for two months resulted in a 28% decrease in cortisol levels.[1] The researchers recruited stressed out adults and assessed their stress levels before and after supplementation via questionnaire and serum cortisol.[1]

    Another study published in 2008 saw similar results. Researchers divided volunteers into four groups group one was given a placebo, the next three groups consumed Withania somnifera extract in varying amounts and quantities: 125 milligrams once daily,125 milligrams twice daily, and 250 milligrams twice daily.[3] By the end of the study, the group that took 250 milligrams twice per day saw a 30.5% decrease in cortisol levels compared to the other groups.[3]

    Although the goal is not to eliminate cortisol completely, it’s extremely important that the hormone is balanced because too much can drastically affect your ability to gain muscle and lose fat.

    If you’re pushing your body to the maximum, like several of Revive MD’s athletes, then you need all the help you can get to keep cortisol levels in check. Remember, you should always focus on health before the performance, because poor health will halt progress fast.

    Ashwagandha as a Performance Booster

    Since ashwagandha has such a profound effect on cortisol, it’s not surprising that it benefits performance as well. In a study from 2015, researchers gave 57 healthy young adult males either 300 milligrams of ashwagandha two times per day or a placebo.[4]

    At the end of eight weeks, the study authors found that ashwagandha increased testosterone levels by 15%, on average.[4] In men, testosterone is the primary sex hormone. It also plays an important role in building muscle and strength. The fact that ashwagandha could boost testosterone levels in healthy young males is significant.[4]

    The researchers also saw major gains in strength and muscle mass and improved recovery. Men taking 600 milligrams of ashwagandha per day experienced increased strength on the bench press and leg extension, along with more muscle growth in their chest and arms. Furthermore, the ashwagandha group reported less exercise-induced muscle damage, which is a key measurement of recovery.[4]

    The Indian Red Cross performed a study on the effect of ashwagandha root extract on chronic stress. They found that the herb helps promote fat loss. Participants who supplemented with ashwagandha experienced twice the decrease in body mass compared to those on the placebo.[5]

    In one sense, these results are not that surprising. since the more muscle mass you have, the faster your metabolism speeds up, which results in greater caloric expenditure. There’s some evidence to suggest ashwagandha may improve VO2 max levels— a standard measurement of cardiovascular fitness. But more research is needed to fully understand its potential as an ergogenic aid.[6]
