Typical carb based pre and intra workout supplements utilize either waxy maize or plain dextrose as their carb delivery vehicle. While they are decent options, they are not the ideal choice when looking to shuttle vital nutrients into your body.

So what is the best choice?

Super Carb Ingredients

Before we start, remember that this is NutraBio, who has completely open formulas – which even includes the amount of flavoring and other agents used! You know exactly what you’re getting here.

  • Rapid Glycogen Loading System

    • Highly Branched Cyclic Dextrin (25g)

You won't find any maltodextrin or waxy maize here, just the ultra fast absorbing HBCD.

Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of energy. Sure, it can synthesize carbs from breaking down proteins and fats, it’s not the most optimal way to fuel your body. Carbs fuel performance, plain and simple. Don’t believe us? Go super low-carb for a few days and see how energetic you feel.

As we’ve pointed out, not all carbs are best in the pre or intra workout window. Sure maltodextrin and waxy maize are quicker digesting than oats and sweet potatoes, but they’re kind of slow when it comes to digestion. HBCD is formed from the breakdown of amylopectin, a type of glucose found in plants.

HBCD has a lower osmolality and higher molecular weight than any of the other carb sources predominantly used.[1] This means it flies through your stomach incredibly fast and then into the intestines for rapid absorption and transportation to your muscles.

This is precisely what we want in a pre workout carbohydrate! It’s in and out of the GI system before you can say Highly Branched Cyclic Dextrin 3x fast. Then it’s onto your muscles where it provides a sustained release of energy fueling your workouts and helping offset any sort of DOMS you might feel after your long sessions.[2,3]

  • Electrolyte Optimizer

    • Calci-K (525mg)

Developed by Albion Human Nutrition, Calci-K is a hybrid form of two crucial electrolytes calcium and potassium.[4] Electrolytes help maintain proper hydration levels in the body and ensure optimal muscle contraction.

Calcium is needed for forming and maintaining strong bones in addition to ensuring proper muscle firing. Potassium is another important electrolytes involved in muscle and nerve function in the body, specifically the heart. Low levels of potassium can result in to cramping, fatigue, and slowed reflexes, none of which you want during your workouts.[5]

    • Sodium Phosphate (157mg)

Orange Mango is one of two brand new flavors, the other being Pineapple that NutraBio has just released.

Much like the previous ingredient, sodium is another vital electrolyte needed for ensuring proper hydration during physical activity. Loads of electrolytes, especially sodium, are lost through sweat during exercise. While this may not seem like a big deal, as little as a 2% loss in hydration can lead to severe cramping, performance decline, and altered CNS function.[6]

    • Albion Di-Magnesium Malate (140mg)

We’ve covered in great deal before on the blog how important Magnesium is, as well as what the best type is. Magnesium is the second most abundant mineral in the body, calcium being the most abundant.

Like the other electrolytes in Super Carb, magnesium is required for numerous functions in the body, but most pertinent to your immediate goals would be: protein synthesis, energy production, glucose control, and muscle contraction.[7,8,9]

Flavors Available

As we write this, two new flavors — pineapple and orange mango — are on the way!! We’ll have our reviews up for them very soon.

To fuel your pre and intra workout needs, Super Carb comes in a variety of flavors depending on what kind of taste you’re looking for:

  • Pineapple
  • Orange Mango
  • Raspberry Lemonade
  • Grape
  • Unflavored

Mini-Review

Pineapple is the other new flavor of Super Carb. Make sure to check our full review to see which is our favorite!

Before we get into our full reviews with pictures, let us just say that this is the product that convinced us that fasted training is not always best. Performance is downright better with carbs! And for lifters, so are the size and pumps!

We’ve also never once felt bloated or run down from this stuff.

So even if you’re a low-carber, we believe you should have those carbs near your workout – and Super Carb is an easy way to make it happen. The next question is, which flavor will we review as the best?

Takeaway

Too often our irrational fear of “carbs making us fat” has led us astray from utilizing the body’s preferred source of energy. This is also discussed in our NutraBio Pre-Extreme post, which comes with 15g of cluster dextrin in a full serving as well.

While too much of anything can be detrimental to your physique and health, using the right amount at the right time will quickly accelerate your progress in the weight room, leading to much better GAINS!

If you find yourself hesitant to jump on the carb bandwagon, yet still struggle to break through a plateau, consider changing course. Add some carbs to your pre or intra workout supplementation and watch your progress catapult to new levels.

Make sure it’s the best type of carb for those instances, and grab a tub of Super Carb to fuel your muscles and get better each workout.
