      SleepElite kicks things off with a 400mg dose of magnesium citrate, from which the supplement delivers 65mg of pure magnesium.

      Magnesium is one of the seven minerals that you need to get in, in high doses, on a daily basis. Our body craves it, and rightfully so, as its integral in a number of ways within it. Magnesium has shown to be helpful in maintaining bone integrity,[1] helping ward off ailments such as osteoporosis. In addition, it seems to play a role in managing blood glucose levels, with research showing that it may decrease risk of type-2 diabetes.[2]

      Clearly, magnesium is important, but how does it relate to rest and recovery? Well, remember how we mentioned those daily stresses and anxieties that can keep us from getting rest? It turns out magnesium can help us manage them! In a meta-analysis from 2017, scientists concluded that magnesium can have a beneficial effect on anxiety.[3] This makes sense, as magnesium deficiency has been linked to chronic fatigue and stress.[4] All of this serves as evidence that magnesium plays a vital role in regulating the neurotransmitters that monitor stress and anxiety.[4] Having adequate amounts of magnesium is critical to keeping us from stressing out too much. Thus, it can help us relax, which in turn helps us fall asleep!

      Magnesium Citrate

      Magnesium citrate is far better than the magnesium oxide found in many other magnesium supplements, thanks to its high bioavailability!

      This bonded form of magnesium is used due to its high degree of bioavailability,[5] meaning that your body has no issues in fully absorbing and utilizing it. That’s important, even when considering the dose here. The recommended daily dose of magnesium lies somewhere between 240 to 420mg, depending on your age and gender.[6] While the 65mg you’ll get here doesn’t cover all of that, it does help you reach that threshold, in addition to providing the relaxation-related benefits we listed above.

      When it comes to magnesium, it’s worth checking your diet. 15% is great — especially because this is the quality form — but you may need more before bed. Too much can send you to the bathroom, so we like the smart and conservative dose. Check your daily food logs and see where you land. You may be good on the mag, but you may also want more.

    • Zinc (from Zinc Orotate) – 12.75mg (116% DV)

      Zinc is another key nutrient the body needs, highlighted by its role in regulating over 300 enzymes that function in different areas, including digestion and metabolism.[7] It also happens to be the second most abundant trace metal found in the central nervous system, thus making it crucial for a number of cognitive functions as well.[8]

      Zinc is a crucial mineral many of us don’t get enough of in our diets which can impact sleep and testosterone production.

      Research has shown that zinc may induce sleep.[9] While the precise methods remain unknown, scientists agree that it’s related to its ability to interact with numerous receptors within the CNS.[8] In a study from 2015, researchers found that, in mice, zinc increased non-rapid eye movement sleep (non-REM) and decreased locomotor activity.[9] In addition, they found no signs of any adverse effects. Based on this study, zinc seems to promote the desired stage of sleep without any inadvertent consequences.

      Another study, published in 2017 by researchers hailing from Japan, analyzed the effect of zinc from natural food sources (such as oysters) on sleep. After 12 weeks, actigraphy results showed that the subjects consuming a high-zinc diet improved sleep and sleep efficiency compared to placebo.[10]

      Lastly, there’s also research suggesting a synergistic relationship between melatonin, magnesium, and zinc, all of which are present in this formula. Subjects with insomnia were given a nightly dose of 5mg melatonin, 225mg magnesium, and 11.25mg zinc, an hour before bed, for 8 weeks. The researchers concluded that the group receiving the administered supplement saw improved quality of sleep, compared to placebo.[11]

  • SleepElite Muscle Preservation Amino Blend

    With those necessary, natural minerals in place, now it’s time to get into the fun stuff. As we’ve said, SleepElite is a sleep and recovery product. While the two go hand-in-hand, there are certain ingredients that are much more potent in aiding recovery than sleep, and vice-a-versa.

    Let’s get into the stuff that’s here specifically for recovery:

    • L-Leucine (instantized) – 3g

      The three Branched-Chain Amino Acids

      Leucine, Valine, and Isoleucine are the three BCAAs, and they’re an extremely important part of your diet

      In order to keep muscle protein synthesis (MPS) at an elevated level while you’re sleeping, SleepElite uses leucine. Leucine is by far the most important amino acid among the BCAAs, playing a direct role in activating mTOR.[12] The mTOR pathway is key in regards to building muscle tissue,[13] making it incredibly important in recovery.

      Leucine activates mTOR, which in turn encourages MPS. While sleeping, you’re not consuming nutrients that can help you recover. Those recommended 7 to 9 hours is quite a long time, and consuming leucine, among the other BCAAs, is a great way to keep your muscles well-fed.

    • L-Isoleucine & L-Valine – 1.5g each

      BCAAs can do wonders for muscle soreness according to some research, but more food/aminos are needed to build new muscle.

      Completing a clinically-proven 2:1:1 BCAA dose are isoleucine and valine, each coming in at 1.5g. While neither seems to be as directly related to MPS as leucine, they each play their own role. Isoleucine has shown to increase glucose uptake post-exercise,[14] which is crucial for recovery. Valine, on the other hand, acts as more of a facilitator, helping increase the effectiveness of the other two BCAAs.

      While the BCAAs have shown to increase exercise capacity and time to exhaustion,[15] that’s not why they’re here. They play a key role in preventing muscle breakdown,[16] something that could potentially occur when your muscles aren’t getting adequate nutrition. This is smart to snag before bed after a grueling day, because most of us prefer not to eat in the middle of the night!

    • Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyric acid (HMB) – 1.3g

      HMB is a metabolite of leucine, and seems to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor. The two act similarly, with HMB showing to be effective in preventing muscle breakdown.

      HMB improves the ability to recovery and feel recovered[17]

      In a study from 2013, test subjects were either given a 3g dose of HMB (3 separate doses over the course of the day), or a placebo. Researchers found that the group consuming HMB saw increased levels of creatine kinase (CK) and higher levels of self-perceived recovery.[17] CK is an enzyme that helps proteins function within the body,[18] so it makes sense that elevated levels post-exercise increase recovery.

      Most studies use an effective dose of 3g, which is around twice as much as the 1.3g here. However, it’s important to note that these subjects were consuming only HMB. In SleepElite, HMB isn’t the main attraction; it’s lending a helping hand to leucine and the other BCAAs. Thus, we can’t say we’re upset with the amount of HMB you’re getting here!

      Ensuring that we get adequate recovery, SleepElite packs a solid dose of amino acids, crucial to recovering by way of preserving muscle integrity. The last thing you want is muscle breakdown, which this blend is here to fight. With a 2:1:1 hit of BCAAs, alongside a solid dose of HMB, you can comfortably get some sleep, knowing that your muscles are getting sufficient overnight nutrients!

      Ashwagandha, known in the scientific community as Withania somnifera, is an adaptogenic herb with roots in Ayurvedic medicine. While many different herbs and herbal supplements sometimes make dubious “wonder-herb” claims, ashwagandha comes darn close to earning that title.

      Helps combat stress and anxiety

      SleepElite is first and foremost designed to help you sleep, with the aim of getting you into a state that condones falling asleep. This means you need to be relaxed, forgetting about the stresses and anxieties of the day. Ashwagandha has proven to be extremely effective in helping you relax, making it a worthy inclusion in this formula!

      Ashwagandha significantly reduces cortisol

      Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that helps lower cortisol in addition to improving VO2 Max.

      Research from 2012 tested the use of ashwagandha in patients with chronic stress. In a double-blind, placebo controlled experiment, subjects were given a 600mg dose of the herb per day for 60 days. At the conclusion of the study, the ashwagandha group saw improved scores on stress-assessment scales and reduced serum cortisol levels.[19] Cortisol is a hormone within the body, and is directly related to being stressed out. When stress levels are high, so are cortisol levels. Thus, by two different tests, this study concluded that ashwagandha can help relieve stress!

      Another study, using only a 300mg dosage, found similar results. After 8 weeks, the test group receiving ashwagandha (along with counseling) saw significant decreases in anxiety test scores and fatigue, in addition to better mental health and vitality, compared to a group receiving only therapy.[20]

      Ashwagandha Strength Gains

      These are some serious strength gains on the big lifts!

      While the root is mainly acting as a de-stressor in this formula, we’d be remiss to not mention what else it can do!

      In regards to training, ashwagandha seems to be helpful. Research has shown it can increase power output, improve muscle recovery (by way of increasing creatine kinase levels), and slightly improve VO2 max![21,22] It’s even added to many supplements to boost testosterone, which also works through the cortisol-lowering pathway! Clearly, ashwagandha is perfect for this formula, as it offers both relaxation and recovery aid!

    • Lemon Balm Extract (Melissa Officinalis) – 300mg

      Lemon balm extract is an ingredient we don’t see enough of, which is a shame because it’s a rock star in the sleep world! Human research seems to advocate for its potential uses as a calming agent. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study from 2004, both 300mg and 600mg doses were used to assess potential sedation effects. Researchers found that 600mg increased self-reported calmness and decreased self-reported alertness.[23] While the 300mg group didn’t see similar results, there’s no doubting the calming ability of this stuff.

      Lemon Balm Research

      In another study, scientists were interested in the relationship between lemon balm extract and anxiety. Subjects consuming 300mg of the extract, twice per day, saw a 18% reduction in anxiety and 42% reduction in symptoms of insomnia.[24] The researchers concluded that lemon balm extract can be beneficial in relieving symptoms of stress, and has potential as a calming agent.

      While we would like to see the 600mg dose used in these clinical trials, we’ve no reason to doubt that 300mg won’t give you some level of calming effects, especially with everything else here. This is a vastly underrated ingredient that should be in many sleep formulas.

    • SerinaidⓇ (70%yielding 140mg Phosphatidylserine (PS)) – 200mg

      SerinaidⓇ is a patented form of phosphatidylserine (PS), formulated by ChemiNutra.[25] PS can help improve mental function, especially when it comes to things like memory and focus, which could be especially beneficial prior to exercise.[25,26] As interesting as that may be, PS may also be able to help reduce stress, which fits the goal of this product.

      PS does more than just enhance cognitive function. Here’s a simple chart showing that golfers hit balls better with higher doses of PS!

      In a meta-analysis from 2006, the effects of PS on exercising individuals were summarized, and the researchers came across a couple of interesting findings. They concluded that PS may help decrease muscle soreness and decrease cortisol levels.[27] In addition, another study found PS to be effective for treating depression, by way of decreasing cortisol levels.[28]

      At 200mg, SleepElite is delivering a solid dose of an effective cortisol-reducing ingredient. Working in conjunction with ashwagandha, any issues stress may present in getting some sleep should be long gone!

    • L-Theanine – 200mg

      Theanine is an amino acid that mainly regulates different neurotransmitters within the brain. It’s abundant in green tea, and is commonly used as a relaxing agent.[29] In fact, research has shown that it can help one relax under resting conditions, without sedating.[29] Unlike lemon balm extract, which relaxes while potentially sedating, theanine seems to solely help you “chill out”.

      Interestingly, there is some research suggesting potential in increasing the quality of sleep. Upon receiving 400mg of theanine daily for 6 weeks, both sleep quality and sleep efficiency increased.[30] Now, as encouraging as this sounds, it’s important to note that the test was conducted on male children (8 to 12 years old) with ADHD. We’d love to see more research, especially using adult subjects, to validate whether theanine directly affects sleep.

      Over here at PricePlow love theanine, but we commonly see it in pre-workouts. It helps “take the edge off” of high-caffeine supplements, and helps you really zone in before training. While that’s not the goal in this case, the relaxing effects still carry over. Having theanine here to help you further relax, at 200mg, definitely gets the job done.

    • Melatonin – 5mg

      Melatonin supplementation improves QOS (quality of sleep) and has a relatively high response rate, even at low doses.

      Last but certainly not least, we have one of the most common sleep-aids on the market, melatonin. It should sound familiar, as it’s usually the first thing suggested when you’re looking for help falling asleep or dealing with jet-lag. That’s because it works, and when aided by everything else in SleepElite, it’s even more effective!

      Melatonin is actually a natural hormone within the body, produced within the brain to help regulate sleep. Its production can be impacted by multiple different factors, such as irregular sleeping patterns or light. In fact, the “blue light” produced by lighting, cell phones, computers, and other technology messes up melatonin production. So, if you’re on your phone right before bed, be sure to look into ways to help filter out blue light… or just stop using the phone so close to bed!

      If you take preventive measures, but still have issues sleeping, supplemental melatonin can be of use. Research has proven a dose as low as 2mg to decrease time to fall asleep, in addition to improving quality of sleep.[31,32] There may be some side effects, such as headaches or next-day grogginess. However, as long as you get enough sleep after taking it (which will be the case with this supplement), you’re likely to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go!
