It’s finally here – November 8, 2016 – Election Day in the United States. The day the entire world has been anxiously waiting for.
Voting is one of the greatest inventions mankind has ever come up with. Every two years, we get to take stock of where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go as a Democratic Republic. Should we as a country change course, or should we continue to plow on?
There is no greater honor nor responsibility than that of voting. And that is why it should be a national holiday.
In order to make a well-informed vote, citizens need to do their research. They need to read information from as many sources as possible – and they need to show up at the polls.
But for some, it’s easier said than done. Not every employee can work a full shift, pick up their children from daycare, and then head to the polls in time. Some people work two jobs just to make ends meet. Others work 12-hour shifts.
The examples could go on, but the point is, this is a sacred ritual, and it deserves its own Holiday. Universities should be closed. 12-hour shifts during polling hours should be banned. And all but essential skeleton crews should be given the day off.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case right now, so I’m going to just put my money where my mouth is:
My election day pledge: a paid day off… always.
For as long as I am an entrepreneur or boss (which will probably be until the day I die), I declare that no individual working for me will ever have to work mandatory hours for me on election day.
In fact, this year, I’ll even throw in a modest bonus for you to do as you wish.
No individual working for me will ever have to work mandatory hours for me on election day.
If you want to do some work, by all means go for it, but I ask for nothing. If you want to go to the gym for four hours, have at it, absolutely guilt-free. And if you want to take that bonus, order yourself an absurd pizza party, and get fat all day long while watching the political news, then by all means do so. Today is your day.
As for myself, I’ll keep an eye on things and try to make sure we don’t send out any bad deal alerts or crash the server. But this is likely the only post you’ll see from me today. We’ll get back to work tomorrow.
If election day can’t be a national holiday, then we’ll just have to make it one ourselves. Now go vote!
See you all tomorrow, thank you to our veterans, and may America always be the land of the free and the home of the brave.
