    How it works – affects mRNA and transporting cells!

Sodium-glucose cotransport 1 (SLGT1) controls sodium-dependent glucose uptake across cell membranes.[2] Glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) is another key glucose transporter, mainly concerned with maintaining proper glucose levels throughout the body.[3] Cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT1) is yet another transporter, but rather than moving glucose, it moves the amino acids throughout the body![4]

    Ok, so why did we spit all of that verbiage at you? Well, it’s important to understand what those key transporters do, and how essential they are, before talking about how AstraGinⓇ can increase their activity. Research has shown that AstraGinⓇ upregulates mRNA and its key transporters, such as the ones we’ve identified above![5] Not only do these transporters carry glucose and amino acids, but they also move vitamins and minerals throughout the body, as well. These proteins allow the nutrients to get passed to intestinal cells, where they can then be metabolized and put to use. If that didn’t happen, those nutrients would enter and pass through the body without ever being used. Safe to say the base mechanisms affected here are exactly the ones you’d want being upregulated!

    Poor gut health is an issue that seems to become more relevant in today’s society by the day. The conversation around maintaining proper gut health is rampant, and for good reason. With links to things like mental health, energy, and yes, even nutrient absorption, keeping your stomach healthy is immensely important.

    AstraGinⓇ can encourage healthy gut operation, however. Research has shown that it can reduce intestinal wall inflammation by 73%.[7] It’s important to note that, despite this study using mice as test subjects, the researchers concluded that the effects were yielded via the same nutrient transporters that brought upon the effects we’ve previously mentioned.     AstraGinⓇ seems to offer some benefit in the realm of muscle growth and recovery, as well. The most obvious involvement here comes from the ingredient’s ability to increase the uptake of leucine. This amino acid is arguably the most important of the 9 essential amino acids (EAAs), and is often regarded as the anabolic amino acid. Leucine stimulates the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway,[8] thus triggering muscle protein synthesis (MPS).[9] Making gains and recovering properly wouldn’t be all that easy if it weren’t for leucine, so being able to better absorb it is definitely advantageous!

    That’s not it, however. There are two key active compounds within AstraGinⓇ that may be able to support leucine in unlocking the door to MPS. Astragalosides and ginsenosides are powerful active compounds found in the plants that make up AstraGinⓇ, and both have been shown the ability to stimulate mTOR – astragalosides do so through regulating insulin levels,[10] whereas ginsenosides accomplish it via activity within muscle cells.[11]

    Inhibits metabolizing enzymes

    Despite sharing the ability to increase the bioavailability of various nutrients with AstraGinⓇ, black pepper extract differs largely in how it achieves this effect. Research from 2002 found that this extract inhibits P-glycoprotein and CYP3A4 in humans.[12] These are key enzymes that metabolize drugs and other nutrients, effectively limiting their overall effect by preventing them from reaching the blood. In inhibiting these enzymes, black pepper extract helps nutrients reach the bloodstream, where they can they be shuttled off to where they need to go in order to work their magic!

    Affects a variety of nutrients

    Allowing the body to properly transport nutrients is one thing, but showing those results across various compounds is another. Luckily, black pepper extract has proven quite potent in that regard:

    • Increased beta-carotene absorption by 60% over a 14-day period.[13]
    • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) uptake rose by 30% after 21 days of supplementation.[14]
    • Enhanced curcumin bioavailability by 2000%.[15]
    • Increased the bioavailability of resveratrol by 229%.[16]
    • Raised maximum serum levels of vitamin B6 by 250%.[17]

    Again, black pepper extract is able to facilitate absorption no matter the compound – it works simply due to the bodily processes it affects. At the end of the study, the scientists saw a 40% increase in mitochondrial capacity in the black pepper and resveratrol group, a much larger increase than the 10% found in the placebo group.[18]

    Increasing mitochondrial capacity translates to increasing ATP production, which can help strengthen our muscles and allow them to work better. While black pepper extract likely wasn’t the key factor in facilitating that effect, it definitely increased the degree to which mitochondrial capacity rose. That’s noteworthy, and could become relevant when using black pepper extract in conjunction with things like creatine or leucine, other potent muscle-building ingredients!
