Regardless of the specific reason you’re using a supplement – such as a protein powder to increase protein intake, a pre-workout to power up a training session, or some EAAs to kickstart recovery – there’s one common necessity that exists for everyone: you need the supplement to work! What good is taking a scoop of pre-workout if only about half of the ingredients actually get absorbed and take effect, while the promised effects of the others never come to fruition? That sounds like a disappointing, costly situation to us!
Our bodies, despite being magnificent machines, aren’t always firing on all cylinders. Sometimes, the body doesn’t fully absorb and utilize the stuff that we feed it. Nutrient absorption can be quite problematic for some people, and can create some serious issues that affect a person’s health. While failing to fully absorb a workout supplement isn’t necessarily as serious, the fact of the matter is nutrient absorption inefficiency is real. That being said, it doesn’t mean it can’t be fought!

UpSorb, the twice-a-day nutrient enhancer!
NutraBio is no stranger in the supplement industry – they’ve been one of the leading companies for years now! They’ve reigned supreme by staying ahead of the competition, catching onto trends and releasing supplements before they become popular. Innovation, complete transparency, and effectiveness has been their calling card – and is likely the motto that led them to UpSorb!
UpSorb is composed of two ingredients (which we’re about to get to!) that have been on supplement labels for quite some time. What’s interesting about UpSorb is the nature of how they’re used, and how that differs from what’s been the norm. We’ve typically seen these ingredients used once daily, in an acute fashion, via some much more complex formula. However, recent research is starting to shift how these ingredients can be used, suggesting that their effects last longer, and can be amplified at more frequent doses. UpSorb is a twice-per-day product, and fully exploits the significant increases in bioavailability and absorption that can be had at higher doses, versus a smaller, less frequent intake. This can help drive the efficiency in which the body utilizes key nutrients – both optimizing your supplements’ effectiveness and overall health!
Ingredients – these should ring a bell!
As we’ve said, UpSorb is a supplement that can be taken twice daily to get the full effects! That comes out to two capsules taken per day, which can be split up really however you’d like (although we’d suggest something like one capsule in the morning, and one in the evening). Here’s what UpSorb packs in a single, vegetable capsule!

AstraGinⓇ [Astragalus membranaceus (root), Panax notoginseng (root)] – 50mg
AstraGinⓇ is an all-natural blend of two plants, Astragalus membranaceus and Panax notoginseng, that combines the contributions of each plant to deliver a potent nutrient-absorbing ingredient. Formulated by NuLiv Science, this ingredient has made quite a name for itself in recent years, showing incredible potential in enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients. Don’t just take our word for it, though – the research out there is extremely convincing!
How it works – affects mRNA and transporting cells!
The way in which the body conducts its nutritional operations is actually quite interesting, but gets very complex when you dive into the fine details. That being said, the mechanisms that are most crucial are relatively easy to explain, and just so happen to be relevant when talking about AstraGinⓇ!
Essentially, providing adequate nutrition to the body is facilitated by mRNA. These molecules encode a massive amount of proteins that are then expressed within cells, which then tell nutrients where to go. Thus, mRNA and these encoded proteins are imperative components in nutrient absorption, given that they tell the body where to carry things!
While there are various proteins that mediate proper transport and digestion, there are a few that we’d like to briefly point out. Sodium-glucose cotransport 1 (SGLT1) controls sodium-dependent glucose uptake across cell membranes.[2] Glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) is another key glucose transporter, mainly concerned with maintaining proper glucose levels throughout the body.[3] Cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT1) is yet another transporter, but rather than moving glucose, it moves the amino acids throughout the body![4]
Ok, so why did we spit all of that verbiage at you? Well, it’s important to understand what those key transporters do, and how essential they are, before talking about how AstraGinⓇ can increase their activity. Research has shown that AstraGinⓇ upregulates mRNA and its key transporters, such as the ones we’ve identified above![5] Not only do these transporters carry glucose and amino acids, but they also move vitamins and minerals throughout the body, as well. These proteins allow the nutrients to get passed to intestinal cells, where they can then be metabolized and put to use. If that didn’t happen, those nutrients would enter and pass through the body without ever being used. Safe to say the base mechanisms affected here are exactly the ones you’d want being upregulated!Uptake enhancement – various compounds, same effect!
Clearly, the processes by which this stuff takes effect suggest it can be very influential. Multiple studies have been conducted on a diverse range of compounds, each one reaching a similar conclusion – AstraGinⓇ works. Here’s just a taste of what different studies have shown:
- Increased the absorption of key amino acids leucine, arginine, and tryptophan by 58%, 66.7%, and 53%, respectively.[6]
- Enhanced uptake of amino acids commonly found in supplements, citrulline and beta-alanine, by 45% and 26%. [6]
- Increased creatine absorption by 33%.[6]
- Boosted vitamin and mineral absorption by 50%.[6]
- Increased glucosamine uptake by 23%.[6]
- Enhanced omega fatty-acid absorption by 37%.[6]
There’s a wide variety of compounds that have seen enhanced absorption rates via exposure to AstraGinⓇ. If that’s not going to reassure you that this patented ingredient can help ensure you’re getting the most out of your diet and supplements, then we’re not sure what will!
Gut health
Poor gut health is an issue that seems to become more relevant in today’s society by the day. The conversation around maintaining proper gut health is rampant, and for good reason. With links to things like mental health, energy, and yes, even nutrient absorption, keeping your stomach healthy is immensely important.
AstraGinⓇ can encourage healthy gut operation, however. Research has shown that it can reduce intestinal wall inflammation by 73%.[7] It’s important to note that, despite this study using mice as test subjects, the researchers concluded that the effects were yielded via the same nutrient transporters that brought upon the effects we’ve previously mentioned. Essentially, it seems like AstraGinⓇ not only helps move nutrients to the intestine, but primes the intestine to effectively receive them!
May even support muscle growth and recovery
AstraGinⓇ seems to offer some benefit in the realm of muscle growth and recovery, as well. The most obvious involvement here comes from the ingredient’s ability to increase the uptake of leucine. This amino acid is arguably the most important of the 9 essential amino acids (EAAs), and is often regarded as the anabolic amino acid. Leucine stimulates the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway,[8] thus triggering muscle protein synthesis (MPS).[9] Making gains and recovering properly wouldn’t be all that easy if it weren’t for leucine, so being able to better absorb it is definitely advantageous!
That’s not it, however. There are two key active compounds within AstraGinⓇ that may be able to support leucine in unlocking the door to MPS. Astragalosides and ginsenosides are powerful active compounds found in the plants that make up AstraGinⓇ, and both have been shown the ability to stimulate mTOR – astragalosides do so through regulating insulin levels,[10] whereas ginsenosides accomplish it via activity within muscle cells.[11]
The wide-reaching abilities of AstraGinⓇ are pretty astounding, which is why we love seeing it in our favorite products. It provides the assurance that a product will yield the effects its supposed to, helping the body fully put to use whatever is being ingested at the moment. Having it working around the clock can help ensure the nutrients we’re feeding our body will be fully utilized, regardless of how they come (from diet or supplementation). At 50mg per dose, or 100mg daily, this product will accomplish just that!

BioPerineⓇ [black pepper extract (standardized to 95% piperine)] – 5mg
BioPerineⓇ, in a similar vein to AstraGinⓇ, is another patented absorption-enhancing agent, although this one comes from a much more familiar source. Formulated by SabinsaⓇ, this stuff is high-quality black pepper extract, which, believe it or not, can seriously enhance nutrient uptake!
Inhibits metabolizing enzymes
Despite sharing the ability to increase the bioavailability of various nutrients with AstraGinⓇ, black pepper extract differs largely in how it achieves this effect. Research from 2002 found that this extract inhibits P-glycoprotein and CYP3A4 in humans.[12] These are key enzymes that metabolize drugs and other nutrients, effectively limiting their overall effect by preventing them from reaching the blood. In inhibiting these enzymes, black pepper extract helps nutrients reach the bloodstream, where they can they be shuttled off to where they need to go in order to work their magic!
Affects a variety of nutrients
Allowing the body to properly transport nutrients is one thing, but showing those results across various compounds is another. Luckily, black pepper extract has proven quite potent in that regard:
- Increased beta-carotene absorption by 60% over a 14-day period.[13]
- Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) uptake rose by 30% after 21 days of supplementation.[14]
- Enhanced curcumin bioavailability by 2000%.[15]
- Increased the bioavailability of resveratrol by 229%.[16]
- Raised maximum serum levels of vitamin B6 by 250%.[17]
Again, black pepper extract is able to facilitate absorption no matter the compound – it works simply due to the bodily processes it affects. Most of the ingredients it has been studied with happen to be extremely important to a healthy body – and are even commonly found in supplements, such as CoQ10.
Potentially affects the mitochondria, too?!
We exert force and energy through a large chain of chemical reactions within the body, the majority of which are triggered via ATP production. This compound allows our muscles to contract, thus enabling us to do things as simple as walk, or as complex as squat with a barbell on our back. The mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they control ATP production – without them, we wouldn’t be able to move very well!
In a study from 2016, 16 young adults participated in a double-blind, placebo controlled test interested in the effects of supplementation with black pepper and resveratrol had on the human body. In addition to daily supplementation for 4 weeks, subjects completed submaximal endurance training with wrist flexor muscles. At the end of the study, the scientists saw a 40% increase in mitochondrial capacity in the black pepper and resveratrol group, a much larger increase than the 10% found in the placebo group.[18]
Increasing mitochondrial capacity translates to increasing ATP production, which can help strengthen our muscles and allow them to work better. While black pepper extract likely wasn’t the key factor in facilitating that effect, it definitely increased the degree to which mitochondrial capacity rose. That’s noteworthy, and could become relevant when using black pepper extract in conjunction with things like creatine or leucine, other potent muscle-building ingredients!
5mg of this spice is the perfect amount to even further enhance nutrient absorption in an acute dose. But a total of 10mg daily, for a long period of time? Now we’re talking about some serious bioavailability boosting!
Stacking – the sky’s the limit!
NutraBio prides itself on their diverse supplement profile – they offer a ton of different products, many of which strive to do different things. They’ve even begun releasing single-ingredient formulas, as well. Essentially, they want you to be able to fully customize your supplement regimen – use only the ingredients you want and need, not the ones you don’t! This allows the consumer to build their own custom stack, full of the products that can help them reach their own goals.
It may make sense to take one dose alongside your multivitamin, such as NutraBio’s MultiSport for Men (or MultiSport for Women). Even crazier, we’re hearing ingredients like this may even help with joint care supplements (the curcumin example for instance) or even CBD on the other end of your day!
In UpSorb, NutraBio has released what might be their most stackable product to date. This formula can work synergistically with everything – it helps boost the bioavailability of virtually any nutrient in your daily diet or supplement routine. This stuff is so effective that you just may want to consider it an essential part of your stack, not just a complementary piece!
Conclusion – UpStart your nutrient uptake!
We provide our bodies nutrients in order to promote overall health. These compounds can come from food or dietary supplements, but at the end of the day, their purpose remains the same. However, the body isn’t always fully receptive to them, and may struggle to fully absorb them!
This is especially true when it comes to sports supplements, as well. In order to ensure the body is getting the maximum benefit from what it’s being fed, NutraBio is hitting us with some top-notch absorption enhancement with UpStart. This stuff combines the industry’s two most proven, most effective bioavailability-boosting agents to make our diets and supplements stronger.
Let’s be honest for a second – supplements can be expensive! Why risk failing to yield maximum effectiveness when you don’t have to? Making UpSorb part of your daily regimen can significantly increase your body’s absorption efficiency, making sure you’re getting your full nutritional (and monetary) worth!
