Myprotein Marine Collagen: Boost Your Protein Intake

Myprotein

Myprotein has a ton of these types of products in Europe, and is now bringing many of them to the America shores!

Whey protein is one of the most popular protein powders around the world. Although whey is considered a high quality source of protein with an impressive amino acid profile, which makes it great for building muscle, it doesn’t do much to support joints, bones, and connective tissue. In case you’re unaware, muscles aren’t the only parts of the body that take a beating during exercise. Your joints, tendons, and ligaments could use some help to sufficiently repair and get stronger. That’s where a collagen supplement comes in.

If your goals are to exercise for as long as possible and avoid injuries, then you should consider using a collagen supplement. Collagen is a structural protein that helps strengthen connective tissues. Thus, a great pairing for overall health and longevity are whey protein powder that supports muscle growth, and collagen protein for maintaining joints, tendons, ligaments, skin, nails, and hair.

Myprotein Marine Collagen: A Superior Alternative

There are a variety of collagen supplements on the market, but which one should you choose? PricePlow is a big proponent of choosing high quality and sustainably-sourced ingredients. As it turns out, marine collagen is one of the best options. The vast majority of collagen on the market are either bovine (cattle) or porcine (pig) derived products. According to a study published in Marine Drugs, over the last decade, collagen from these sources has become limited.[1]

Hit your daily protein intake and get extra health benefits from Marine Collagen.

Depending on dietary preferences or religious restrictions, some people simply don’t want to consume collagen from cattle or pig. Furthermore, there’s a risk that bovine-derived collagen carries transmittable diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or transmissible spongiform encephalopathy.[1]

Fortunately, Myprotein has come out with a good alternative — Marine Collagen. Although Myprotein is not the first company to release a collagen supplement exclusively derived from marine organisms, they offer it at an affordable price and in multiple flavors. Each serving of Myprotein Marine Collagen contains 10 grams of protein, which is an easy way to hit your daily protein target.

Myprotein Marine Collagen Ingredient Analysis

There’s only one primary ingredient in Myprotein Marine collagen and that’s 100% marine collagen derived from fish. We’ll also discuss flavor additives. Marine Collagen – 10g

Collagen is a protein that makes up the primary structure of connective tissues.[1] Due to its unique features, Marine collagen is commonly used in a variety of dietary supplements and functional foods, which the Mayo Clinic defines as a type of food that has a positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition.[1,2]

Myprotein Marine Collagen Ingredients

If you get the unflavored version, it’s 100% Marine Collagen and nothing else!

As of writing this article, there are 28 types of collagen that have been identified and are distinguished by their supra structural organization and domain structure.[1] They’re identified with Roman numerals, (e.g., collagen type I or collagen type II).[1] However, type I collagen makes up between 80 to 85% of all the collagen that’s present in the human body. It’s most commonly found in bones, skin, tendons, cornea, and ligaments.[1] Type II collagen, found in cartilage, is the second most abundant form of collagen in the body.[1]

All types of collagen are formed by long chains of amino acids linked together to form a helix structure and can either be fibril-forming, fibril-associated, or network forming.[1] Either way, they all contribute to the structure of bodily tissues and boast their own specialized functions. Collagen peptides can be obtained via fermentation with proteolytic bacteria, by enzymatic treatment, chemical hydrolysis, a variety of other processes.[1]

Collagen Benefits

According to a study published in the journal Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, marine fish collagen and collagen peptides are structured like human collagen. They have similar potent bioactivities, exceptional safety profiles, biocompatibility, bioavailability, and stability.[2] Marine collagen peptides have been shown to have several health benefits for metabolic disorders and skin and bone repair.[2]

A study published in the American Journal of Medical Sciences found that supplementing with marine collagen peptides can enhance insulin sensitivity and significantly decrease fasting blood glucose, creatinine, HbA1c, mean arterial pressure, and diastolic blood pressure.[3]

The study authors also reported that those who consumed marine collagen peptides saw a notable reduction in triglyceride levels, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol, free fatty acids, nitric oxide, cytochrome P450, and prostacyclin. Study participants also experienced an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), adiponectin, and bradykinin.[3]

But, what does this all mean? Marine collagen has the potential to enhance lipid and glucose metabolism, renal function, and insulin sensitivity. We should note that while the study participants were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, the findings are still significant. The benefits could be extremely useful for those with these medical conditions.

  • Skin/Bone Repair

Several studies have demonstrated that supplementing with marine collagen peptides leads to faster wound healing.[2,4] Some trials found that marine collagen peptides are safe for patients with osteoarthritis. The supplement helped improve their pain and functionality.[2,5]

    Myprotein Clear Whey Lemon

There’s nothing better then an ice cold drink post workout!

Researchers have hypothesized that marine collagen peptides activate the synthesis of extracellular matrix macromolecules, such as collagen, via the upregulation of gene expression in multiple collagen-modifying enzymes.[2] In other words, consuming an exogenous source of collagen helps promote endogenous collagen production.

Some even consider marine collagen an anti-aging supplement. It contains a high concentration of proline, an amino acid that scavenges free radicals, specifically hydroxyl free radicals. Thus, marine collagen expresses immunomodulatory and photoprotective properties.[2]

It’s well established that protein is an essential nutrient and its benefits go far beyond muscle building and repair. Protein is a main component in numerous physiological processes and at least nine essential amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the body. Therefore, it’s crucial to consume enough protein, which, for active individuals, comes to roughly 0.8g to 1g per pound of body weight each day.

Furthermore, consuming a supplement high in protein can help increase satiety, thus keeping food cravings at bay. If you’re serious about maximizing your results, both inside and outside of the gym, consider adding a high quality collagen powder to your supplement stack.
