MuscleTech SX-7 Hydroxycut Black Onyx Non-Stim is the latest addition to the SX-7 line of products and complements perfectly with the stimulant based fat burner in the line.

MuscleTech SX-7 Hydroxycut Black Onyx Non-Stim is the latest addition to the SX-7 line of products and complements perfectly with the stimulant based fat burner in the line.

If you’ve been following the trends of supplement companies the past year or more, you’ve noticed more and more of them create multiple “lines” of products that are branded under a certain title. MusclePharm has their Hardcore Series, Gaspari has their Elite Performance Series, and MuscleTech has more than you can shake a stick at!

One of these lines is the SX-7 Black Onyx line that has slowly been expanding this year. We’ve already seen #Shatter SX-7 Black Onyx, the line’s pre workout, and Hydroxycut SX-7 Black Onyx, the line’s stimulant-driven fat burner.

Now, MT has added an all new product in the form of stimulant free fat burner with Hydroxycut Black Onyx Non-Stimulant, a GNC-only fat burner containing what we consider some of MuscleTech’s next-generation “test ingredients”. The label is rather unique and could stack perfectly with the stimulant based fat burner in the line – and it’s got a lot of new and natural extract ingredients.

Hydroxycut Black Onyx Non-Stimulant Ingredients

One look at the label, and you’ll see that MuscleTech went back to the drawing board when crafting this non-stim fat burner. There are very little similarities between the two which should make for a rather interesting fat burning stack, should you be in the market for one:

  • Robusta Coffee Extract (200mg)

Hydroxycut Black Onyx Non-Stim contains a lot of new ingredients from its stimulant-based counterpart that should make for an interesting 1-2 fat burning punch.

MuscleTech is getting clever with this first ingredient. You may think this is a novel new form of fat burning coffee extract, but upon closer inspection, it’s nothing more than Green Coffee Bean Extract.

We’ve put this ingredient through the ringer on multiple occasions and wonder why companies still insist on using this ingredient when the studies validating its use have proven to be flawed and have since be redacted.[1]

This extract is standardized for 45% chlorogenic acids which really won’t do much for fat-burning, but will help lower blood pressure.[2]

  • Longan Extract (100mg)

Longan Extract comes from the Dimocarpus Longan fruit and also commonly known as Dragon Eye. It has traditionally been used in Ancient Chinese Medicine for improving cognition and possibly imparting some neuroprotective benefits as well.

In terms of weight loss, not much research has been conducted on but some animal studies show that Longan extract decreased body size, hepatic (liver) lipids, triglyceride levels and size of epididymal fat.[3]

  • White Mulberry Extract (60mg)

White Mulberry, a.k.a. Morus alba, is another plant whose root and fruit has long been used in ancient medicine for a variety of purposes including bolstering the immune system and cognition.

Where White Mulberry really earns its place in a weight loss product is its function as a carb-blocker. When taken approximately 30-60 minutes before a higher carbohydrate meal, the extract has proven to reduce carbohydrate absorption and mitigate glucose spikes following the meal.[4,5]

Some other research indicates that mulberry extracts may be beneficial in reducing feelings of hunger and appetite.[6]

  • Lemon Balm Extract (60mg)

MT's SX-7 line is slowly expanding. The series already has a pre workout in #Shatter and a stim-based version of Hydroxycut.

Lemon Balm is an herb often used in teas in reduce anxiety and induce a state of calmness in the body. Most research into lemon balm has been its effects on eliminating stress and improving sleep quality in individuals.[7,8]

We all know dieting can be an incredibly stressful time of the year, so including a little bit of lemon balm may help you to mellow out a little and not freak out so much about when your next meal is.

When used for weight loss benefits, there’s not a whole lot of research on lemon balm. However, one study found that an extract of the essential oils contained in lemon balm reduced in blood glucose and increase insulin levels, thereby improving the body’s utilization of glucose and storage.[9]

  • L-Theanine (50mg)

Much like the previous ingredient, theanine is an ingredient most frequently used to alleviate symptoms stress, anxiety, and fatigue.[10,11] When paired alongside caffeine, theanine helps to smooth out the stimulative effects and improve focus and cognition.[12]

Should you choose to stack the stim and non-stim versions of Hydroxycut Black Onyx together, this amino acid will work in perfect synergism will all the other stims in its energized counterpart to provide long-lasting energy and focus.

  • Wakame Extract (20mg)

Wakame is a type of seaweed that sushi fans are well-acquainted with. MuscleTech has used an extract that has been standardized for its fucoxanthin content.

Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid contained in the seaweed that has been investigated for a variety of benefits in regards to weight loss and glucose metabolism. Several studies on fucoxanthin have shown that not only does the compound improve carbohydrate metabolism, but also increase GLUT4 expression in skeletal muscle.[13,14] Basically, this means that more carbs get stored in your muscles, where they belong, and less around your waist, where they don’t.

Furthermore, when studied for its direct impact on weight loss, fucoxanthin has been found to be a beta-3 adrenergic agonist it white adipose (fat) tissue.[14] This activation leads to increased activity of Uncoupling Protein 1 (UCP1) which indirectly boosts metabolic rate of the body.[15] Over time, this has resulted in higher metabolic rate and decrease body fat.[16]

Of all the ingredients in Hydroxycut Black Onyx Non-Stim, this looks the most promising and worthwhile in terms of actual science backing it up as a proven weight loss aid.

  • BioPerine® (5.3mg)

Black pepper extracts are nothing new to most supplement users. BioPerine® is the most well-known, and patented, form of black pepper extract. As always, it’s included to improve the bioavailability of all the other ingredients included in Hydroxycut Non-Stim. BioPerine® inhibits the body’s metabolization of the other various extracts included, which makes them stay active longer in the body and more bioavailable.[17]

Dosing

Consume 1 capsule with 8 oz. of water 2 times daily, preferably 30 to 60 minutes before your two largest meals of the day, (e.g. breakfast and lunch). Do not exceed 2 capsules in a 24-hour period.

Wrap Up

To capitalize on the popularity of the SX-7 Black Onyx series of products, MuscleTech has released a non-stim counterpart that stacks perfectly with the stimulant-based offering the line already has.

Overall though, very little about this supplement looks intriguing or really proven in terms of actual weight loss. The wakame extract is perhaps the most interesting, and seems to be the only real ingredient with solid science proving its efficacy.

One thing to note though is that the SX-7 Black Onyx is GNC only. However, should the product do well and some of these new ingredients actually prove effective, you might see MT include them in another product down the line in one of their other lines.
