Do you love tailgating before the big football game each weekend of the college football season?
Do you host big parties on fantasy draft night and hang with all your buddies on Sunday’s during the NFL season?
OF COURSE YOU DO!
Every red-blooded American male loves football, and there’s nothing more synonymous with football than BEER!
However, all of those beers over the weekend can wreak havoc on the fine physique that you’ve spent the whole week working diligently on. This leaves many a gym bro at a crossroads:
- Not partake in any of the libations, OR
- Pound down a six-pack and lose his real six-pack
But what if there was a way you could have your beer and keep your gains?
Enter Protein Beer!
What is This Madness?
Protein beer is the brainchild of Supplemental Brewing, startup brewing company located in Bloomington, IL. They specialize in brewing beers that taste great but also help you keep your week-time gains.
They have a belief that “everyone in America should be able to enjoy a cold protein beer after a hard workout,” and with the public’s health, it can become a reality.
Blake Konrady, founder of Supplemental Brewing said he got the idea while experimenting with various post workout recovery drinks. “At one point, I tried a protein shot, which consisted of a shot of vodka with chocolate protein powder sprinkled on top. Let’s just say I will never do that again.”
This led Konrady on his path toward developing a post workout beverage that not only tasted great but also helped him take advantage of the all important “anabolic window” post workout. The result of which are two different brews optimized to refresh and help you recover.
Supplemental Brewing has two different options for the broskie who wants to indulge in an alcoholic beverage occasionally without doing any damage to his diet or physique:
Brewtein is an American Wheat ale that has a light body coupled with a refreshing wheat flavor and clean finish. It’s recommended to be served cold right out of the bottle or in a glass with a lemon wedge.Best served cold straight out of the bottle or can, or in a glass with a lemon wedge.
Brewtein also has a higher protein content than any other beer on the market giving it some decent macros:
- 178 Calories
- 7g Protein
- 13g Carbs
- 5% Alcohol
The other offering is the lighter, lower carb Nutribeer, the obvious choice for those on “poverty macros.” Nutribeer is in the vein of a light lager style beer that has a crisp, light body coupled with a smooth citrus finish that’s best served ice cold.
Since Nutribeer might be for the more calorie-restricted bro, its macros are slightly different:
- 122 Calories
- 4g Protein
- 7g Carbs
- 4% Alcohol
Unfortunately, Protein Beer is still only in the kickstarter phase. They are aiming to have the first batch ready to sell to the masses by December 2015. Starting a brewery from scratch is no cheap endeavor, as such, Supplemental Brewing is looking to partner with an existing brewery to take care of production, bottling, and canning.
Yes, Protein Beer is finally almost a reality! To be honest, we’re surprised it took this long.
It may not be as high-protein as a whey protein shake, but when’s the last time one of those shakes tasted as refreshing as a cold beer on a hot day?
Could the macros be improved? Sure… just look at what more ‘professional’ outlets such as Isopure RTD are able to do, making clear liquid protein systems at full dose.
But this yet another step in the direction of “healthier” junk food (ie Quest Chips and FunnBar?) that could be marketed for the masses. Given the recent high-protein craze we’ve seen with various foods and snacks, it’s only a matter of time before one of the big name breweries jumps on this bandwagon.
Supplemental Brewing has lit the torch on the concept of a higher protein beer, and the sky’s the limit as far as where this can go.
