Myprotein Layered Bar: Chocolate Coconut, PB&J, and Chocolate Peanut Butter

Upon checking our Myprotein News page, we noticed something special that didn’t get much attention: three new flavors of Layered Bar! And they’re not just any three flavors, because one of these is wildly different:

Myprotein snuck out some new Layered flavors in 2022: Chocolate Coconut, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Peanut Butter Jelly (pictured)

Myprotein Layered Bar is the powerhouse brand’s flagship functional food / protein bar in the US, and it delivers big on its promise of layers of deliciousness. Although we haven’t seen much attention on social media, three new flavors have landed on MyproteinUS’ website:

  • Chocolate Peanut Butter

  • Chocolate Coconut

  • Peanut Butter Jelly

While most brands have a chocolate peanut butter flavor, the latter two are definitely a bit more out of left field. And good news – in case you’re afraid to make the leap with a full 12 bar box, they’re available in single serving samples!

So it’s time to dig in — first, check out PricePlow’s coupon-powered prices, and then let’s recap these incredibly delicious bars:

Myprotein’s site doesn’t distinguish macro differences between bars, but here’s generally what you’ll get with a 55 gram Layered Bar, give or take a carb or gram of fat or two:

  • Calories: 220

  • Protein: 20g

  • Fat: 9g

    • Saturated Fat: 7g

  • Total Carbs: 19g

    • Sugar: 4g

    • Sugar Alcohol: 12g

A bit about the Layered Bar Ingredients

Thanks to the layers of confectionary coating, Layered Bars have massive lists of ingredients. You’ll generally find a few themes with them:

  • There’s a diverse protein blend

Inside, you’re going to find milk protein concentrate, milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate, soy protein isolate, and whey protein concentrate. The protein is nearly everywhere inside – from the confection to the flavor coating to the protein filling to the icing to the crisps inside. It’s honestly impossible to figure out which ingredients are providing the most protein, though.

  • It’s higher in saturated fats – but we think this is good

Now that’s a wild protein bar label!! (This one’s from the Birthday Cake flavor)

Due to the use of palm kernel oil and milk proteins, there’s a higher saturated fat content than your average protein bar. We’re fans of saturated fat, and believe that it’s healthy — looking at the actual data shows that it was very wrongly villainized in the 1950s and recommendations to limit it were based on weak (and potentially fraudulent) conclusions.[1,2]

  • There are sugar alcohols from maltitol and glycerine

Like most protein bars, there’s a good deal of sugar alcohol content inside, which comes from maltitol and glycerine. Some users get GI distress from sugar alcohols, but we’ve anecdotally never had issues with maltitol nor glycerine (also known as glycerol). The good news is that maltitol provides a far better blood sugar and insulin response compared to regular sugar.[3]

There will also be added ingredients specific to the flavors, such as peanut butter and/or extra cocoa used.

Overall, if you can handle the dairy, like saturated fats from palm kernel oil, and do well with sugar alcohols like maltitol, this bar is phenomenal. We check all of those boxes, which is why it’s one of our favorite supplement snacks.

Takeaway: Myprotein couldn’t sneak this one by us

Layered Bar is great stuff, and it’s surprising that we don’t see more coverage about it on Myprotein’s social media accounts (@mypro and @myproteinus in the US).

When you have flavors like Peanut Butter Jelly and Chocolate Coconut, know that we’ve got to try them, so we ordered some sampler bars to review. Our video will be posted up above when it’s ready. Until then, check out our other Layered Bar videos below.
