Most of you know The Arnold as an expo primarily centered around bodybuilding, strongmen competitions, and most important of all, SUPPLEMENTS!
While that covers the majority of the fare at the expo, there were also a few really cool fitness-centric tech devices unveiled as well. Today’s feature is one we got to see up close and personal.
It’s name is the Güdpod, and it’s primed to take the protein shake market by storm!
What Is a Güdpod?
No doubt you’ve seen the widely popular Keurig coffee machines that dominate most residential kitchens nowadays. In case you haven’t seen one, the Keurig is a pod-based coffee brewer where the operator selects their coffee (or tea) of choice, slides it into the holder, places their cup underneath the dispenser, presses “Brew”, and 10 seconds later you have a steaming cup of deliciously fresh brewed coffee.
The upside to this is that you don’t have to pull out a standard drip coffee maker and make a huge pot of coffee for only one or two people. Less mess, less clean up, and the flexibility to make as many different flavors as you want! The downside of course is the overall cost.
The Güdpod is essentially the bodybuilder’s answer to a Keurig. It offers you multiple options of proteins (types and flavors) at the simple click of a button. No longer do you have to pull out a tub of protein powder, grab a shaker bottle, weigh out the scoop size, add in liquid and shake.
All you need to do is fill your glass with the desired liquid (milk, water, etc.) select what type and flavor of protein you want and all the mixing is done for you!
What’s It Do?
Those of you familiar with Keurig machines know that you have to load them with water, not so with the Güdpod machine. It doesn’t hold the liquid, but instead blends the protein right in the cup that you filled with milk, juice, water, or whatever other fluid you want! There’s essentially no clean up with the machine, only the glass you drink from.
A Güdpod serves two purposes. First, each pod is vacuum-sealed, light sensitive, PBA-free, and recyclable that stores the supplement and keeps it fresh. Secondly, and here’s the cool thing, once the pod is inserted into the machine the becomes a single use blender!
Check out the video demonstration below:
As you can see, when the güdpod machine opens a güdpod the ingredients are immersed into the liquid in your cup and mixing blades also descend into the liquid, where the mixing is done to absolute perfection!
More than just protein!
Turns out that the Güdpod machine doesn’t just do protein shakes, but really any kind of supplement that needs mixing. According to the manufacturers, the pods will not only contain various types of proteins like whey isolate or casein, but also pre workout and post workout supplements. Thereby giving you a one-stop shop for all of your workout supplementation needs.
The Güdpod machine retails for $199.99 through their website, but will be shipping to major retailers in June 2016, so you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.
As for the pods themselves, currently Güdpods are available in Whey Isolate, Casein, Pre Workout, and Post Workout. All come with the standard flavor options of Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, or Unflavored. The come in packs of 14, 29, 74, or 149 pod packs ranging in price from $19.99 – $109.99.
Unfortunately, the website doesn’t currently list any nutritional info or ingredient labels on any of the pods. So, it’s somewhat difficult to assess the quality each of the various options is packing.
See it in action
Here’s a video taken from GudPod’s Facebook feed:
Overall, the Güdpod machine and pods are a really innovative and unique take on the popular Keurig Coffee Makers. Is this the ideal fit for someone who works out at home or doesn’t mind packing a shaker bottle or two with them on the way to the gym, no way, not even close.
Where the Güdpod machine is a great fit are big box commercial gyms. The people that typically go to those don’t know much about supplements (or quality) and don’t mind paying over $1 for a serving of a prop blend pre workout or protein shake.
For the rest of us, it’s not cost effective or logical to invest in the Güdpod machine, but still it was cool to see in action.
