Cellucor Whey Protein Review

When it comes to whey protein, everyone is looking to unseat the top dog, Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey.

With their COR-Performance Whey Protein, Cellucor may have just done that.

In my COR Whey Review, I tested two flavors: cinnamon swirl and chocolate peanut butter. The video is below, with the TL;DW under that:

TL;DW – The Review Specs

Ingredient Profile

  • 25g protein per scoop (26 scoops in a 2 pounder), 120 calories, 3g carbs (1g sugar), 1.5g fat (0.5g saturated).
  • The majority of the protein is whey isolate, which has the lactose / milk sugars and other such nonsense filtered out to a higher degree than whey concentrate, which is the #2 ingredient.

Whey concentrate is cheaper (and potentially greater in side effects) due to higher lactose content.

I’ve been told that this is definitely far higher than a 51% ratio of isolates vs. concentrates, but that formula is proprietary to Cellucor.

  • 5.5g naturally-occurring BCAAs.

Now let’s get into these two specific flavors:

Cinnamon Swirl

  • Taste: 10/10

    WOWOWOWOWOW!

It’s not something you’ll get “tired of” after 2 pounds worth. This is a forever 10.

Note that I have not been able to compare this against a couple other popular cinnamons, such as Trutein.

  • Mixability and Texture: 8.5/10.

I don’t shake very hard in my review, and it’s thick, but there were still some particles on the wall. Just shake more if you care, and you can always water it down more.

Peanut Butter Marshmallow

  • Taste: 8/10

Some people love this. It’s great, but to me, simply not as good as cinnamon. If I were to buy the three-pack stack, I’d try Chocolate, Vanilla, and Cinnamon.

  • Mixability and Texture: 8.5/10.

Slightly better than cinnamon for me, but it’s about the same commentary as above.

COR Whey: Overall Value: 9/10

It’s not the absolute cheapest (you can see all whey protein prices on PricePlow), but it’s still a great deal from a well-known and trusted brand, and tastes better than the other national brands as well.

Cellucor vs. ON 100% Whey

Let’s repeat the Cellucor ingredient profile:

25g protein per scoop (26 scoops in a 2 pounder), 3g carbs (1g sugar), 1.5g fat (0.5g saturated).

Compared to ON 100% Whey, which has 24g protein (28-29 scoops in a 2 pounder), 3-4g carbs (2g sugar; depends on flavor), 2g fat (1g saturated), and still manages to taste “thinner”…

…and did I mention ON is more expensive?!

Cellucor has a bit less protein in the entire tub, so it’s about a wash in terms of value, but you’re still getting far better macros and better taste with COR-Whey.

ON is the king, and will probably remain the king, but technologies change, and Cellucor’s extraction and flavor systems prove that. They’re just better. (And the bottle is sexier, if you care)
