  • What is carnitine?

    Carnitine is an amino acid that plays a crucial role in the metabolism of fatty acids and energy production.[1] It also helps preserve membrane integrity, stabilize coenzymes within the mitochondria, and decrease lactate production.[1] Carnitine is mainly supplied by animal-based foods, but it can be endogenously produced in the liver and kidneys.[1]

    If your main goal is to burn as much fat as possible, then it’s advantageous to have sufficient levels of carnitine around to facilitate the process. Carnitine serves as a fatty acid transporter, meaning it helps shuttle fats into the mitochondria to undergo beta-oxidation.[1]

    Beta-oxidation is a catabolic process that involves the breakdown of fatty acids to ultimately form acetyl-coA, which ends up entering the citric acid cycle to generate ATP.[1] Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP for short, is the cell’s energy currency. It’s required for nearly every physiological process, especially physical activity. The body primarily uses carbohydrates or fats to generate energy.

    It’s well-established that during high intensity activities, such as sprinting, carbs are the primary source of fuel, because the body can quickly breakdown the glucose molecules to generate a sufficient amount of ATP.[1]

    Once you get into more endurance type activities such as running a marathon, then the body will preferentially burn fats.[1] This also means at rest or during low intensity exercise, such as walking, you’ll burn more fats than carbohydrates to fuel that activity because the energy demand is not very high.

    Because fatty acids have to undergo so many steps before creating an adequate amount of ATP, it makes sense that the longer the activity lasts, the more fats will be burned. So how does all of this relate to carnitine?

    If your body doesn’t have an optimal amount of carnitine available to transport the fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production, then your ability to burn fat will be significantly reduced. As we mentioned in the intro, being in a caloric deficit, eating a high protein diet, managing stress, and sleep are all key factors to losing weight.     Based on the role that carnitine plays in fatty acid oxidation, it would make sense that a supplemental L-carnitine would increase your ability to burn body fat and lose weight, but what does the literature have to say?

  • Weight Loss Research

    In a meta-analysis from 2016, researchers assessed the results of nine randomized controlled trials that examined carnitine’s effect on weight loss.[2] They concluded that participants who supplemented carnitine lost significantly more weight and had a lower body mass index (BMI) compared to the control group.[2]

    Other than this meta-analysis, there’s not much evidence supporting L-carnitine supplementation for weight loss. That just goes to show that fat burners don’t work unless you do! However, L-carnitine does have a multitude of other benefits it provides!

  • Exercise performance research

    Although we’ve put a large emphasis on weight loss thus far when discussing the benefits of L-carnitine supplementation, it also has several other things to offer in regards to exercise performance!

    L-carnitine offers more benefits than just weight loss, it also may boost recovery!

    In a study from 2011, lead researcher Benjamin Wall and colleagues were one of the first to show that oral supplementation of L-carnitine is capable of increasing intramuscular carnitine levels and modulates substrate metabolism in humans during exercise.[3] The subjects consisted of 14 healthy young adult males. They were either given 80g of carbohydrates or 80g of carbohydrates plus 2g of L-carnitine-L-tartrate.[3]

    The results showed that the carnitine group had on average a 21% increase in muscular carnitine levels compared to baseline, whereas the control group saw no significant difference.[3] They also found that after cycling for 30 minutes the carnitine group used 55% less muscle glycogen than the control group.[3]

    Furthermore, the participants supplementing with carnitine had around a 11% increase in work output compared to the control.[3] This landmark study was the first to show that not only could dietary L-carnitine increase carnitine levels within the muscles, but it could boost performance and spare muscle glycogen![3]

    There’s also a good amount of research showing that L-carnitine supplementation reduces muscle soreness, markers of muscle damage, acutely increases maximal oxygen uptake, improves power output, enhances blood flow, oxygen delivery, and overall recovery.[4]

    Furthermore, other studies report that L-carnitine supplementation significantly benefits the elderly by increasing muscle mass, decreasing fat mass, and reducing both physical and mental fatigue.[4]

  • How does L-Carnitine boost recovery and performance?

    More research is warranted in order to fully understand how L-carnitine improves recovery and may enhance exercise performance, but one convincing explanation is what we call the “testosterone uptake theory”.

    This comes from a study conducted in 2006 which determined the effects of L-carnitine-L-tartrate (LCLT) supplementation in combination with post exercise feeding on androgenic responses.[5] They concluded that 2g LCLT supplementation resulted in a decrease in serum levels of testosterone.[5]

    That may not sound like a good thing, but the researchers speculated the reduction occurred due to an increase in muscle protein synthesis and cellular absorption of testosterone![5] Therefore, L-carnitine may enhance the endocrine system’s response to exercise.

    Furthermore, other studies have shown that L-carnitine increases mitochondrial efficiency, resulting in better energy production and enhances the cell’s ability to dispose of metabolic waste products.[6,7]
