fuel:one – Cutting Edge Athletic Supplements from Iovate

fuel:one is a relatively new collaborative brand between Iovate and Sportika that just launched in April of 2014. Iovate is best known as the new owners of Hydroxycut and MuscleTech, while Sportika is becoming like the Diageo or Bacardi of the supplement world as it owns or is partnered with a wide range of well-known brands in the industry.

fuel:one

fuel:one – Every sport. Every lifestyle.

The fuel:one line is still in its early stages but has the standard basic product range: some pre-workouts and a post-workout, some protein, a mass gainer, one weight loss powder, one endurance product and a multi-vite. At the moment, they’re a GNC exclusive, but some products are already making their way to Amazon for a bit of a discount.

Now let’s take a closer look at some of their more interesting products:

Phospha Build

Phospha Build

Phospha Build is one of the few phosphatidic acid supplements on the market right now

By far the most interesting is the Phospha Build pre-workout, one of only two products (that we know of at the time of this writing) that employs phosphatidic acid. This is a relatively new ingredient developed by Chemi Nutra that looks really, really promising. A 2013 study from the University of Wisconsin sparked interest in this ingredient when it discovered that phosphatidic acid is a direct precursor for the signaling of mTOR, the protein that directly regulates muscle growth.[1]

Since that initial study, follow-ups with human subjects have shown very interesting results. Phosphatidic acid appears to be highly bioavailable when taken orally, and studies on weight-trained athletes showed significant increases in power output when doing squats and leg presses as well as an improvement in lean body mass gain over the placebo groups.[2,3]

Phospha Build uses Chemi Nutra’s patented Mediator for its phosphatidic acid content. At present this is the only phosphatidic acid product on the market that’s had extensive safety testing and is the same formulation used in the studies that showed positive results (with a 750mg standard dose).

Micellar Whey Build

Micellar Whey Build is billed as the world’s only sustained-release whey. It’s a pure whey protein, but polymerized in such a way as to create protein particles that are double the normal molecular weight. They take twice as long to digest and thus release more slowly for a sustained anti-catabolic effect. It functions in a similar way to casein supplements, but with a higher total leucine content.

Isolate Build

Isolate Build doesn’t have any revolutionary gimmicks to speak of, but it’s a solid protein supplement with absolutely no junk content whatsoever. It comes packed with four isolate proteins delivering high doses of leucine and glutamine at 20 grams total protein per serving without any fat, sugar or junk carb content.

Thermo Stack

This is the one fat burner from the company thus far, and also the one product in the line that looks a bit shaky. The fuel:one thermogenic gives you 200 milligrams of green coffee with a total 270 milligrams of caffeine. Green coffee has shown some modest promise in fat burning and blood pressure studies, but it’s hardly one of the “killer apps” of the thermogenic world, and it’s taken a big beating in 2014 with the FTC investigating Dr. Oz for his shilling of it (among other more questionable products). Green coffee extract isn’t a complete junk ingredient as it does work to some degree, but making it the centerpiece of a thermogenic product is a bit of an iffy move.

Complex-1

fuel:one’s repair and recovery formulation blends both fast and slow-digesting carbs with 4 grams of fiber, 5 grams of creatine and 25 grams of whey protein for muscle support and medium-chain triglcyerides (MCTs) for immediately available energy.

BCAA Armor

BCAA Armor is primarily a pre-cardio support product, but the 8:1:1 BCAA matrix may also allow you to squeeze out a few extra reps. Energy content comes from taurine and 40mg of green tea caffeine per serving. There’s 10 grams of BCAAs total with 8 grams of leucine and no junk aminos to fill space.
