In case you’re not familiar with Jeff Seid, let us introduce you to the 26-year-old Mr. Olympia competitor, clothing-company owner, author, and ISSA-certified bodybuilder with 1.25 million YouTube subscribers and nearly 4 million Instagram followers. Jeff is most well known for being crowned the youngest International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) professional champion in America.

A true winner never quits.

Jeff started lifting weights when he was just 11 years old, played football, wrestled, and aspired to be a collegiate athlete.. However, during the teen’s senior year of high school, he tore his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) while playing football. The ACL is found in the anterior portion of your knee joint and is a key element of stability, especially in sports that involve quick changes in direction.

After sustaining a second ACL injury, Jeff’s dreams of playing college football or wrestling came to a screeching halt. He slipped into a depression and quickly lost his way. That’s when Jeff discovered men’s physique, a new division of bodybuilding. Jeff started hitting the gym more consistently and dialed in his training to look more like a men’s physique competitor, rather than an athlete. Suddenly, Jeff’s motivation was reignited and he set on an entirely new path that proved to be a perfect fit.

Fast forward to 2020, Jeff is an IFBB professional, has won multiple competitions, and is eager to share his knowledge with young, aspiring athletes. It’s insane to see how much Jeff has accomplished in a relatively short period of time, but it just goes to show how passionate he is and how hard he works to make his dreams a reality. If there’s one thing that Jeff is big on it’s balance — he wants to show people that fitness can be a part of your life without being your entire life. Training

Whenever someone has a great physique, it’s obvious their genetics play a massive role, however you still need to put in the work. Jeff had nearly eight years of lifting under his belt before he became an IFBB Pro.

Like most young kids, Jeff was small and skinny. To bulk up, he spent years eating plenty of high-protein, minimally-processed whole foods and lifting heavy weights. After years of consistency, he clocked in at over 200 lean pounds. His dedication helped him in a spot in men’s physique.

As far as training goes, Jeff likes to switch things up, He never sticks to a set plan for too long. However, he does advise novice and intermediate lifters to commit to a structured workout program for optimal results.

“After training for 15 years I no longer follow a written-out routine. I go by how my body feels and I know what muscles to train on which day, as for the training sessions itself I just create the workout as I go. Symmetry is one of my biggest concerns with my physique so I always train my muscles with the same frequency to keep my proportions in check for a symmetrical physique.”

Here’s an example of one of Jeff’s chest and calves workouts:

  • Barbell Incline Bench Press: 4 sets of 10, 8, 8, 6 reps
  • Dumbbell Bench Press: 4 sets of 10, 8, 8, 6 reps
  • Incline Dumbbell Flyes: 4 sets of 10, 8, 8, 8 reps
  • Dips – Chest Version: 3 sets to failure
  • Cable Flyes: 3 sets of 12, 10, 8 reps
  • Standing Calf Raises: 5 sets of 20, 15, 12, 10, 8 reps
  • Seated Calf Raises: 5 sets of 25, 20, 15, 12, 10 reps

Based on this workout, you can tell that Jeff likes to stick to higher rep ranges to induce a muscular hypertrophy response. He also likes to do high amounts of volume (i.e. set, reps, weight). If you have less experience, start with less volume by doing fewer sets per exercise and gradually build up over time.

Nutrition

Similar to training, Jeff’s diet changes depending on his goals— whether he’s bulking, cutting, or maintaining. But regardless of any immediate goal, Jeff makes sure to eat a micronutrient dense diet that’s high in protein and includes plenty of minimally-processed whole foods.

In order to make sure he’s in a caloric deficit when he’s trying to lose fat, or in a caloric surplus when he wants to gain muscle, Jeff tracks his calories and macronutrients in MyFitnessPal. Macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates, and fats. They make up your total amount of calories for the day. Protein and carbohydrates each contain 4 calories per gram, whereas fat contains 9 calories per gram.

Jeff is a fan of high protein diets for optimizing recovery and muscle growth, so he keeps his protein at 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight. Since he weighs just over 200 pounds, it equates to roughly 300 grams per day.

Consuming 300 grams of protein with just whole foods like chicken, steak, and fish can be extremely challenging. So protein shakes help him reach that daily goal. Everyone’s calories and macronutrient intake is different based on age, metabolism, gender, weight, and activity level. Overall, Jeff likes to consume a high protein diet and tries to get the majority of nutrients from real food. But he also uses supplements to fill in gaps.

Here’s a glimpse at Jeff’s supplement regimen. “When I wake up, I take a multivitamin and fish oil pill with my first meal. About 30 minutes before training, I take pre-workout powder. After training I have two scoops of hydrolyzed whey protein and 15 minutes after that I’ll have some sugar, like honey. About 30 to 60 minutes before bed, I like to consume two scoops of casein protein powder.”

Current Goals

Even though it’s been a few years since Jeff has stepped on a stage, he still works on improving his physique every time he walks into the gym.

When we asked Jeff what his current health and fitness goals are, this is what he had to say: “My training is the same exact intensity year-round. It is the same intensity when I was training for Mr. Olympia and it’s the same at the moment. Now my dieting is not quite as strict, but I am still mindful of everything I consume.

My goal is the same today as it was 15 years ago. That is to build the best possible physique I can for myself. I just finished a five month bulk to add size during the quarantine here in America. Now I’m currently shredding for summer. I do this because I love it.”
